I. PURPOSE
To celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting of THEARC West.

II. EVENT BACKGROUND

Bridges Across the River is a District based, nonprofit that aims to improve the
quality of life for children and adults who reside east of the Anacostia River. Building
Bridges Across the River built and operate The Town Hall Education Arts Recreation
Campus. The Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC) affords
ward 7 and 8 residents with community programs and services. On Thursday,
February 22, 2018 Bridges Across the River will unveil THEARC West during the
ribbon cutting ceremony. Since its establishment, THEARC has been a key part of a
revival of the ward 7 and 8 communities. In May of 2007, THEARC won the Urban
Land Institute's Award for Excellence and was acclaimed for its contribution,
response, and innovation within the community. Furthermore, THEARC through
public/private partnership have cultivated a space that aids communal advancement.
The grand opening of THEARC West celebrates a new resource for Ward 7 and 8
families and the completion of the campus.

Chris Smith, CEO, WC Smith


Mr. W. Christopher Smith is the Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer of William C. Smith & Co., Inc and a board member for the
Building Bridges Across the River nonprofit organization. William
C. Smith & Co., was founded in 1968, achieved its greatest
expansion when William C. Smith passed down the company to his
son W. Christopher Smith in 1990. The company has since plowed
tens of millions of dollars into renovating housing complexes east of
the Anacostia River. Town Hall Education, Arts and Recreation
Campus are one of the companies additions the area. In 2005, Smith
was honored with the Apartment and Office Building Association's
prestigious Sidney Glassman award and in 2017 he received the
Washington Urban League's Whitney M. Young Service Award. A
District native Christopher Smith graduated from Central High
School and received his bachelor degree from George Washington
University.

Trayon White, Ward 8 Councilmember


Washington D.C. native and Ward Councilmember Trayon White is
a proud father, community advocate, and humanitarian. Through his
career White continues to support and advise a number of programs
and activities that focus on career placement, character development,
work ethic, life skill development, civic engagement, spiritual
development, and critical thinking. In 2016, Mr. White led an
energizing campaign that generated non-traditional voters through
his “We the People” campaign. On January, 2, 2017, Mr. White was
sworn in as the Ward 8 Councilmember. Councilmember White
represents, provides support and empowers people who suffer from
the social impact of crime, violence, drug abuse, educational
disparity and poverty. Councilmember White received his bachelor’s
degree in Business Administration from University of Maryland
Eastern Shore.

Rahsaan Bernard, Building Bridge Across the River/, CEO


Rahsaan Banard is the CEO of Building Bridge Across the River and
Founder of Beyond Excellence LLC and Beyond Excellence Nursing
and Therapy Services. Building Bridges across the River nonprofit
organization seeks to improve the quality of life for children and
adults who reside east of the Anacostia River. Beyond Excellence
LLC is a consulting firm specializing in corporate wellness, health
management, non-profit management and human capital training and

development. Prior to his tenure at THEARC Bernard provided


consultative strategic wellness planning for clients through
Professional Benefits Solution Inc. Barnard has deep roots in the
fields of healthcare and civic leadership. Through his leadership at
BBA/THEARC Bernard wants to create a space where,” where
children and adults alike can expand their horizons through drama,
music and dance, and the Washington, DC community can come
together for events, performances and town hall meetings.” Bernard
holds a B.S. in Healthcare Management Informatics from University
of Maryland Baltimore County and a MBA in Business
Administration from Bowie State University.

Annie Donovan , Director, CDFI


Annie Donovan is director at CDFI Fund. The Community
Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund) generates
economic growth and opportunity in some of our nation’s most
distressed communities. By offering tailored resources and
innovative programs that invest federal dollars alongside private
sector capital, the CDFI Fund serves mission-driven financial
institutions that take a market-based approach to supporting
economically disadvantaged communities. She was most recently
Chief Executive Officer of CoMetrics, a social enterprise that
provides high quality, affordable business intelligence tools to small
businesses and nonprofits seeking to improve financial management,
better measure social impact, and increase their capacity for
innovation. Prior to CoMetrics, Director Donovan was Senior Policy
Advisor to the White House, working collaboratively with the Office
of Social Innovation and the Council on Environmental Quality. She
was part of a team focused on advancing impact investing, social
enterprise and impact data as key strategies for improving the social
sector. Donovan received her BA in Economics from Allegheny
College, and MBA in Finance from the UMD.

Dr. Marcee White, Medical Director, Children’s National


Medical Center
Marceé J. White, MD, FAAP is the Medical Director of Children’s
National Health System’s Mobile Health Program, Children’s Health
Project of DC, and the Children’s Health Center at THEARC. Dr.
White is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and the Assistant
Residency Program Director of the Community Health Track at
Children’s National. Prior to joining the faculty at Children’s

National, she served as Chief Pediatric Resident. Dr. White serves on


the Board of DC Action for Children and the DC Chapter of the
American Academy of Pediatrics. She is also a member of the DC
Pediatric Oral Health Coalition. Dr. White earned her B.S. degree in
Biology and Pre-Medicine from Xavier University of Louisiana and
her M.D. from George Washington University School of Medicine.
Marceé White has served on Martha’s Table’s Board of Directors
since July 2014.

Jack McCarthy, President and CEO, AppleTree Institute

Jack McCarthy is president and CEO of AppleTree Institute for


Education Innovation and AppleTree Early Learning Public Charter
School in Washington, D.C. AppleTree works to close achievement
gaps by developing young children’s cognitive, social, and emotional
skills through individualized teaching. Jack has worked as a social
entrepreneur at the intersection of education research, policy, and
practice since 1993, combining his experiences in business and
politics with a reformer’s sense of urgency about the importance of
educating all children to high standards. Previously McCarthy was a
professor at American University he taught, Creating US Education
Policy, McCarthy believes, “education is the key to competing
effectively in our technology-driven, hyper-connected global
economy, sustaining a vibrant democracy and maintaining a strong
national defense”. McCarthy received his BA in Political Science
from American University.

James Woody, Bishop Walker School for Boys


James Woody is currently the Executive director and President of
Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys. The Bishop John T. Walker
School for Boys is a tuition-free Episcopal school for children from
traditionally underserved communities. The Bishop John T. Walker
School for Boys strives to alter the educational and social trajectory
of children from traditionally underserved communities and prepare
them for leadership and service in their communities and well
beyond. An inspired non-profit leader and native Washingtonians,
Woody hopes effect positive change for boy growing up in under
resourced areas. Throughout his career Woody has led several non-
profits and ministries. He is passionately committed to the
empowerment of at-risk individuals and families and the

development of disadvantaged communities. Woody received his BA


from Houghton College and MA in Counseling from Regent
University.

Dorothy Kosinski, Director & CEO, The Phillips Collection


Dorothy Kosinski has been the director of The Phillips Collection
since 2008. She is the former senior curator of painting and sculpture
at the Dallas Museum of Art, and served earlier as an independent
curator for the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, the Kunstmuseum Basel,
and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. In August 2013, Dr.
Kosinski was appointed by President Barack Obama to the National
Council on the Humanities. She currently serves on the Boards of the
Sherman Fairchild Foundation and The Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz
Foundation.Dr. Kosinski has written and published widely in
numerous catalogues and books, as well as many art magazines. She
regularly participates in scholarly lectures and has extensive teaching
experience at the university level. She received her MA and PhD
degrees from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and
her BA from Yale University.

Bob Roth, CEO, David Lynch Foundation


Bob Roth is the Executive Director of the David Lynch Foundation,
and national director of the Center for Leadership Performance,
where he helped to oversee the introduction of the TM program. Bob
Roth is one of the most experienced and sought-after meditation
leaders in America. Over the past 45 years, Bob has taught
Transcendental Meditation to many thousands of people and is the
author of the forthcoming authoritative book on the subject, entitled
"Strength in Stillness: Bob Currently serves as the CEO of the David
Lynch Foundation, charity which has brought meditation to over
500,000 inner-city youth in underserved schools in 35 countries, to
veterans and their families who suffer from post-traumatic stress, and
women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. Bob
also directs the Center for Leadership Performance, another
nonprofit, which is bringing meditation to Fortune 100 companies,
government organizations, and nonprofit charities.
