1. INTRODUCTION
There is a proposal to construct a apartment (39.95m Height) (G+12) at Desiya
Kavala,Kakkanad for M/s. Asset homes Pvt Ltd . It is decided to carry out a detailed
sub soil investigation to find out Safe bearing capacity and selection of appropriate
foundation for the building.
The work was awarded to M/s CGL Geoinformatics, 51/937 B, Paradise Road, Vytilla
P.O, Ernakulam 682019. A detailed field investigation were carried out from
15/02/2018 to 23/03/2018. This report summarizes the subsoil investigations and furnishes the
recommendation
on the type of the foundation to be provided.
2. SCOPE OF WORK
The scope of work at this site, entrusted with us comprised of
2.1 Mobilization of boring rigs with all necessary equipments and skilled/unskilled
personals for the field work.
2.2 Boring three bore holes of diameter 150 mm, with drilling equipments in sand,
silt, clay and gravel to a maximum depth of 19.35 m or till the spoon rebound
whichever is earlier at the selected location fixed by the client.
2.3 Conduction of Standard Penetration tests in bore holes at every 1.0 m upto 6m
depth and at every 1.5m after that depth or change of strata and prepare bore
log showing details.
2.4 Collection of disturbed samples in air tight polythene bags with proper labelling
and transportation to laboratory.
2.5 Conducting the laboratory tests on the disturbed samples as per Indian
Standards and furnishing the results.

RECOMMENDATIONS
INTRODUCTION
M/s CGL Geoinformatics, 51/937 B, Paradise Road, Vyttila PO, Kochi 682019 had
conducted site investigation for the proposed apartment building (G+12) of M/s Asset
Homes Private Limited at Desiya Kavala, Kakkanad. Three boreholes were taken up to
a maximum depth of 19.35 m using rotary drilling. Standard Penetration Tests were
conducted at regular vertical intervals and the samples taken during the investigation
were tested in the laboratory.

DATA AND DISCUSSIONS

The soil profile in BH-1 location shows that the topsoil is of filled waste up to 1.5 m
depth. It is followed by clayey sand up to 6.0 m depth having N value varying
between 2 and 5. After that it is lateritic sand up to 9.0 m depth having N value of 18. Below that, it is
poor to excellent moderately strong hard rock up to the bored depth
11.0 m having core recovery = 100 % and RQD =45 % and 93 %. Ground water
table is located at 2.66 m below the GL.
The soil profile in BH-2 location shows that the topsoil is of sand up to 2.0 m depth
having N value of 4, followed by clayey sand layer of 2.0 m thickness having N value
of 1. After that it is lateritic sand up to 6.0 m depth having N value of 8 and 6. This is
followed by lateritic clay with pebbles up to 9.0 m depth having N value of 4 and 9. Below that, there is
weathered rock up to 11.0 m depth having N value of 21 and 23. After that it is very poor soft rock
up to 11.1 m depth having core recovery= nil. It is
followed by poor moderately strong hard rock up to the bored depth 13.0 m having
core recovery = 49 % and RQD =49 %. Ground water table is located at 2.66 m
below the GL.
The soil profile in BH-3 location shows that the topsoil is of gravel up to 4.0 m depth
having N value of 3 and 6, followed by sand with pebbles up to 5.0 m depth having N
value of 23. After that it is laterite with pebbles up to 6.0 m depth having N value of 9. This is followed by
lateritic clay up to 15.0 m depth having N value varying between 7
and 19. Below that there is weathered rock up to 17.45 m depth having N value >50,
followed by very poor soft rock up to 17.75 m depth having core recovery= 100 %
and RQD = nil. After that there is very poor moderately strong hard rock up to the
bored depth 19.35 m having core recovery = 56 % and RQD 22%. Ground water
table is located at 2.53 m below the GL.
Soil profiles in the boreholes show variations. Topsoil up to around 4.0 m depth has
low shear strength. Soil below that has reasonable shear strength. But not enough to
support the proposed structure. So, shallow foundation is not advisable. Hard rock
layer is available at 9.0 m depth, 11.1 m depth, and 17.75 m depth in BH-1, BH-2,
and BH-3 locations, respectively. So, foundation can be rested in hard rock layer with
proper embedment.

RECOMMENDATIONS

In BH-1 & BH-2 locations

i) It is recommended to provide DMC/drilling concrete pile foundation to

support column loads. Each pile should have a length of around 9.5 m to
11.5 m depending on the availability of hard rock layer. Pile should be
rested in hard rock layer with sufficient embedment length
(approximately equal to half times diameter of pile into hard rock layer). Based on the above, following
recommendations are made;

In BH-3 location

ii) It is recommended to provide DMC/drilling concrete pile foundation to

support column loads. Each pile should have a length of around 18.5 m
depending on the availability of hard rock layer. Pile should penetrate
through soft rock layer and should be rested in hard rock layer with
sufficient embedment length (approximately equal to one times diameter
of pile into hard rock layer). Based on the above, following
recommendations are made;

Sl no

iii) For arriving the frictional force, the top 2.0 m of soil is discarded. Factor of
safety of 2.5 for side friction and 2.5 for end bearing are taken for the
design. A factor of safety of three was taken for arriving lateral load. Piles
are considered as long piles and pile heads are considered as fixed heads.
iv) The sub structure has to be constructed as per latest IS code and it should
be certified by a qualified engineer.
v) The load carrying capacity of pile should be ensured by conducting initial
pile load test as per IS.2911 (Part IV) or by conducting High strain rate
dynamic pile load test. Routine pile load test should also be conducted as
per I.S specification.
vi) Quality of piling like concreting, diameter of pile, depth of pile, etc should
be ensured by Sonic pile integrity test.
vii) These recommendations are based on three borehole data obtained. If
there is any variation in the soil profile is observed during the boring
operation, it should be referred to a Geotechnical Engineer.
