students of the IJSB will come up this kind of a situation, how they can manage themselves

from using gadgets and at the same time how they can do it to avoid failing on their studies.

This study is about to the students who are exposed to the use of gadgets, this study will be

consider as their reminder that abusing to the use of gadget can have a negative effect on their

academic performance. At this point I honor teacher Marianne Kate and teacher Diane for the

big help they gave to me while I am making this study, because of their help I finally

accomplished this research as my requirement in the subject “Practical Research 2”.

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Nowadays the technology is very useful in our daily lives, specially the mobile phone

that allow us to communicate with each other. One of the reason why there are technologies is

to help the people to make things easier and to improve their way of living. The technology

cannot be considered as a bad influence to the students as long as they manage their time in

using gadgets and they use it especially to their academic purposes.

The gadgets make our lives better in many ways. For today’s generation there are

already improved technologies, one of the most improved technologies are the portable gadgets

that help us in our daily lives such as mobile phones, high quality laptops, and many more, and

also there is newly invented electronic devices that allow us to charge our gadgets wherever

we are and that is called “Powerbank” which has a stored electricity. The technology is one of

the reason why people didn’t feel bored sometimes, because most of the time they exposed

themselves to the gadgets and they feel joy on spending their time on using it. Also there are

some people who prefer to stay at home and enjoying, using their gadgets than hanging out

together with friends. Not just the gadgets are giving happiness to the people nowadays, if there

is no internet in their lives they will not be happy, because most of the people spent their time

on having fun in social media like facebook, Instagram, tweeter, and many more.

Even though there are a lot of disadvantages of using gadgets, if people are still

responsible and has a good time management about that it can give them a good benefits and

they will not be affected from the bad effects that can possibly get from it. The mobile phones

is the most common type of gadgets that people will use in their daily lives, even the students

today couldn’t live without their mobile phones, because there are some activities on their
2
school that they need a mobile phones and internet to research some activities. For today’s

generation the mobile phone is not belong to “Wants” it is already belong to “Needs” because

the mobile phone turned to be the most important thing to the people’s life. For the 21 st

century’s generation people couldn’t live without mobile phones because using the mobile

phones everyday was considered as their daily routines.

Overusing gadgets has a lot of negative effects to the people, even though all of the

people knows about that, they are still doing these stuff because they always think about their

happiness while using gadgets but they didn’t think what kind of a negative effect that they

will get from it.

There are some students do prefer to study in their mobile phones because if there are

something that are not familiar to them they will immediately research on the internet, but the

disadvantage of studying in the mobile phones is the most major negative effect it can damage

your eyesight which can lead you to difficulties in the future times, that’s why it is more

advisable to listen and taking note the important thing of the topic at school and study using

the notebooks/books to make yourself safe from the negative effect because studying on the

phone is prone to radiation that possibly damage the eyesight of the people.

The improved technologies in today’s generation has a very big impact on the people

especially for the students nowadays, and this improved technology that already exist can help

the people in many ways. There is a big purpose why the technologies nowadays was improved.

The people used gadgets in different ways, but for the students they can possibly get a good

benefits on using gadgets if they will use to uphold a good time management for their own

good especially if they use it for their educational activities or something that it is really

important to them. It is more advisable for the students to have a good time management to let

themselves properly manage the things that they are going to make, and in that point they use

3
mobile phones to set a reminder to remind themselves on what they are going to do, time

management can help the students because if they can manage themselves properly they will

not feel any pressure on their selves while they are doing something.

On the TV show entitled “Salamat Dok” in the Umagang Kayganda the doctor gives

an advice to all the people that if they use any gadgets everyday the maximum time on using it

is 2 hours, because if the people still use gadgets over 2 hours it can damage their health and

after using they feel some headaches or some pains in their selves, people should avoid using

gadgets when it is dark because the most major negative effect their it can damage the eyesight

of the people, that’s why the doctor gives an advice to all the people to remind them, to avoid

having negative effects from it. People should need to obey the advice that the doctor gave,

especially for the student who exposed themselves to gadgets, aside from getting negative

effect on it they forgot their obligations as a students because their attention is on the gadgets.

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

Review of Related Literature

The history of the technology is the history of the invention of tools and techniques and

is one of the categories of the history of humanity. The technology can refer to methods ranging

from as simple as stone tools to the complex genetic engineering and information technology

that has engaged since the 1980’s. The term technology comes from the Greek word “techne”,

meaning art and craft, and the word logos, meaning word and speech. It was first used to

describe advancements and changes which affect the environment around us.

About the technology this was invented because of very important purposes of the

people. The first important purpose why this technology was invented is to have a faster

communication to the people, it allows them to communicate immediately than before, it takes

a week or month(s) in sending at least one message to another people, but because of the help

of the technology the people’s life was easier than the past generation. The first technology

invented was the “telephone”. Alexander Graham Bell and Antonio Meucci invented this kind

of a thing to allow people talk to one another. But the telephone is not really great for sharing

a large amounts of information between people.

And few years later the computer was invented and then internet to write and send vast

amounts of messages or information in almost instant without the need for traditional mail. The

first computer was the “Abacus” that was invented by Charles Babbage in 1822. Not all

technologies can do with communication (https://study.com/academy/lesson/why-technology-

is-created-revised.html)

9
There are then person who helped each other to create a technology. This ten person has a

different kinds of function in creating the technology and because of their individual

contribution the technology was successfully made before. The technology will not be exist if

these person didn’t help each other to create the technology that the people have now. All of

the people should thank this guys for their very big and great contribution they gave already,

those person who invented the technology has a very big help to all of the people, they make

that kind of a thing using their very highest level of Intelligence quotient because inventing the

technology is not easy that is why people nowadays should value in using the technology.

(https:biztechmagazine.com/article/2012/06/fathers-technology-10-men-who-invented-and-

innovative-tech)

For today’s generation especially for the students, the individuals exposed themselves

to their gadgets because aside from they enjoy using it, they can use the gadget for their

academic purposes. Also in some institutions there are some teachers allow their students to

use mobile phones during their class hours because some of the articles or activities that are

related to their lessons will be found in the internet, but the teacher won’t allow them to use

any kinds of application that is not related to their educational activities specially the messaging

applications because it can destruct them.

For the 21st century’s generation you can see some students bringing their laptops going

to school, because they use it for making educational activities such as research papers or many

more that will use laptops, for the students nowadays the gadgets was not belong to the “wants”

because the gadgets is very useful to them and it is consider to be their “needs”.

10
When students use laptops and other tech-devices by the instructor’s advice they are

connected to course learning objectives. The classroom learning and engagement of the young

students can be impacted positively by the use of these digital devices (Samson, 2010).

Technology has revolutionized the field of education. The importance of technology in

schools be ignored. In fact, with onset gadgets in education, it has become easier for teachers

to impart knowledge and for students to acquire it. The use of technology has made the process

of teaching and learning enjoyable. (Muir-Herzig, 2008).

According to (Young, 2004) the excessive use of gadgets can affect the academic

performance of the students and relationships among others, because some people nowadays

refer to enjoy using gadgets than to have a bond together with family, relatives or friend that is

why this can affect the relationship of the people. Such baffling technology use has been

identified as technology addiction and has many negative impacts on health and social

behavior. Young stated that gadgets can affect the student’s individual academic performance

because if they can’t manage themselves properly it can lead them to addiction on using

gadgets.

(Saez, 2010) stated that the technologies have both positive and negative impacts. Some

studies focus on both the positive and negative consequences of use of the tech-devices and

services and provide a balanced approach regarding the use of the same. The technology is

integral part of the people’s everyday life, as they are dependent from all over the world for

communication, organization and employment. Saez stated that people will not feel

comfortable if they cannot use mobile phones or laptops and enjoying their selves from the

social media or anything that can make them feel enjoy in their daily lives because in today’s

generation the gadgets are the most common and very usable type of thing that people can

consider as their need for their individual lives.

11
According to (Mitchel, 2012) students should be encourage to develop a technological

world. The necessity of social networking, computer games or digital habits of them should be

understood by the elders, because those things that were made can make the students feel enjoy,

but the students needs to balance it if they want to make unnecessary things that can make them

feel enjoy and to remove any pressure on their selves and for the mean time they must be

responsible for their studies just for their own good. And also for the Parents they should

facilitate a healthy and balance relationship between technology and their children helping

them to use the social media more effectively. If people will engage themselves into

technological world it has a lot of advantages they can get, even though there are some negative

things that can also possibly get from it, but it depends on the people on how they can manage

their individual lives. There are a lot of people that were influenced by the technology because

nowadays technology was become the most important thing in the lives people, and it is more

better if the people will use the technology in a very good and effective way.

(Erickson, 2012) stated that having a voracious use of technology has a negative effect

on the youth, because due to this effect the youth never wanted to experience any struggles on

their lives and they always want to make or to do things faster to make their selves away from

pressure, in short the negative effect there was the laziness of the youth. And in that point the

youth should be reminded by their parents that they must be responsible in all things especially

on their studies just for their own good. The negative effect about this things will not stay if

the youth can properly manage themselves from exposing their selves to gadgets.

According to (Young, 1998) the addictive use of internet has a negative effect on the

mental health of the people. There are positive relationship between internet addiction and

psychiatric disorder like depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention

deficit disorder. So the addictive use of internet need a clinical help.

12
Although the use of tech-gadgets and services has many positive impacts to the people’s

life, they are short lived. In long run it has negative impacts on the individuals but the positive

impacts still floating. The digital activities make the youth strong in technical skills but make

them weak in real life practical skills. It takes the young mass away from the reality helping

them to live in their imaginary world. Due to the time spent on the devices the youth are

refrained from some outdoor activities with friends and family. The indulgence in violent

games may create more violence in their mind and that can possibly influence them. The more

they use the gadgets, the more they are crazy about it which may distract them from study.

During the time of playing games when they can’t achieve the set target, it may raise their

anxious level higher. After all addiction to the devices may develop unhealthy lifestyle, poor

time management and poor eating habits among the youth. Following studies highlight some

of the negative effects of the tech-devices and services.

It would have been a lot better if the drawbacks or the negative impacts of the use of

the digital services would have been known before some years. As the use of the digital services

has negative impacts students should minimize the use of these tools and should aware about

its use. The students must be responsible and they should use gadgets in a very effective way

to help them, such as making their educational activities they are allowed to use a gadget and

internet in that point because they are doing their responsibilities in school. The student should

think first on what they are going to do if it is beneficial to them or not, and as a student their

obligation is prioritize their studies, but it doesn’t mean that they are not allowed to use mobile

phones or any kinds of gadgets, but this is just a reminder to them that they should avoid on

having voracious attitude on operating any kind of gadgets. (Walsh, 2012).

Faber et al. (2015) study the effect of the government upgrade in ICT, by increasing the

internet connection speeds, on children’s educational performance in England. They argue that

the upgrades are randomly made across the country and that they can thus exploit exogenous

13
variation to estimate the casual effect. They link the test scores of primary and secondary

students to the availability of ICT at their home address and find that it has zero effect on

student’s educational attainment or learning productivity. According to Faber et al (2015) the

home study is not preferable for the students, because they will learn less than in school. For

today’s generation the home study is not advisable unless the student belongs to Person with

disabilities (PWD)

According to (Shy, 2010) there is no one can deny that the gadgets have not only

simplified the lives of individual but also made them feel comfortable and luxurious. This also

tells that the gadgets and internet are one of reason why people feel enjoy.

(Tech Crates, 2012) stated that nowadays tasks are maximized with the used of modern

gadgets. It can help allow people to make and accomplish any kind of tasks because of the help

of modern gadgets that already exist in today’s generation, and Tech Crates said that nobody

can dare to live without smart phones, laptops, tablets or any kinds of gadgets, because in

today’s generation any places are covered and developed by the technology

According to (Zucker & Light, 2009) providing computer in every schools increases

technology skills of the teachers and students in both the developed and the developing world.

Laptop programs can increase students’ engagement with academic work and school, improve

technology skills, and have positive effects on students writing. Many nations suggests that

laptop or computer programs will be the most successful as part of comprehensive intiatives

that also address changes in education goals, curricula, teacher training, and assessment.

(Andersen and Becker, 2009) stated that Technology aids students’ expression. And

today the improved technology that the people have today can help the students’ on their

educational activities like making reports or projects, and also they can use laptop to present

14
the report they made in front of the class. Andersen and Becker said that using laptops or any

gadgets in school and during class hours won’t never be bad as long as the students’ use it for

their educational activities and or they use it for very important matter or some reason.

15
Conceptual Framework

This study was anchored on the study by Murah (2015) who found that using a mobile

phone and other electronic gadgets for an extended time even affects students who habitually

study a lot. A lack of sleep or reduced study time as a result of mobile phone usage is not the

only way these devices affect performance at school. Students should prioritize their studies

than using mobile phones and having fun in the social media, because if they prioritize their

studies they can get a good benefit from it and at the same time they will not regret at the end

of the time. Cell phones or mobile phones has turned to be the most important thing in the lives

of people, it is difficult to imagine that people can live without any gadget in their hand because

most people nowadays engaged their selves into technological world.

Summary

This research is all about on the students who are very excessive in using gadgets. It is

really hard for the students on having more time on studying than using tech-gadgets, because

they enjoy on using gadgets than studying, even though they know that studying can help them

and it is very beneficial specially on their education ,they still do something that can make them

enjoy that are not related in their studies. For the early age the technology today has upgraded

and become very important on the lives of people, and the people will be influenced to this

because in today’s generation any places are full and covered by the technology. The Gadgets

has a very big help especially the mobile phone, using of gadgets is not bad if the people use it

in a very good way. For the 21st century the parent’s provide their children a mobile phone to

communicate with them and at the same time they can use it for their educational activities to

help them, but the parents should monitor their children to use the gadgets they gave in a very

16
good way. This study helps the students to realize that having an excessive used of gadgets can

affect their studies.

Hypothesis of the study

This study is about how can gadgets affects the individual academic performances of the Junior

High School and Senior High School Students in Infant Jesus School of Bukidnon Inc. Also

this study aims to prove to the students that having a voracious attitude in using gadgets can’t

help them and the most major negative effect there is it can cause a bad effect to their academic

performances. This study can be consider as the reminder to those students who really expose

themselves to the gadgets, it reminds them that using a gadget over 2 hours a day is not

advisable especially to the students, they forgot to do their responsibilities in school. And it is

more advisable to the students to use gadgets in their educational activities or other way that it

is really important to them, on the other hand students can get a positive result if they use

gadgets in a very reasonable way.

Ho: The null hypothesis is to prove that having a time management to the academic performance

and the use of gadgets of students cannot lead the students to fail their studies.

Ha: The alternative hypothesis is some researcher trying to disprove the null hypothesis.
