EMBANKMENT
1. GENERAL
Embankment shall be include the construction of all embankment for canals, inspection
roads, and filling on other parts of the works with suitable material obtained from canal
excavation or extracted from borrow area.
All embankment shall be constructed to the lines and levels shown on the drawings or as
directed by the Engineer. The material for embankment shall not contain any stump,
brush, weed root, clod and any matter that may decay.
Embankment for construction embankments shall be divided into the type :
1. Embankment-A by excavated materials
2. Embankment-B by borrow materials including compensation of borrow land,
excavation, loading, transportation, spreading, and compaction for the comlpection of
works as specified in the Drawings and Specifications.

3. After the stripping process and the materials are satisfactorly conditioned, followed by
embankment of the soil material. Material land taken by Dump Truck dropped at a
location not far from the location that will be done (assuming the soil material has been
approved by the Engineers). Followed by spreading by using a bulldozer.

4. If spreading certain thickness is adequate, and then the compaction process by using a
Vibrator Roller. Compaction is done by perlayer method (thickness of spreading layer and
passing number shall be in accordance withn results of trial embankment).

5. QUALITY PLAN
Before commences embankment work, the ground under embankments shall first be
cleared and stripped.
Field and laboratory tests of earth fill soil materials shall be carried out by the Contractor
at his own laboratory or the laboratory approved by the Engineer. The test for fill
materials shall include the specific gravity test, grain size analysis, test on liquid limit and
plastic limit, moisture-density relation test, etc.
Suitable materials from excavation will be used under these Specifications as embankment
after review of laboratory test results and approval by Engineers.

becomes good. To obtain the adequate impermeability, moisture content in dry side
from the optimum water content is recommended to limit -2%. Furthermore, in case
that the embankment is compacted in lower moisture content, it needs to pay attention
to the safety of slope as the shear strength of the soil is diminished under rainfall or
submerged condition as such soil has much air voids which absorb the water. From
the reason above, the range of water content for compaction is recommended to
control within O.M.C. – 2% to O.M.C. +3%.
5.4 Tolerance
The following values are set as tolerance of the earthworks in detail as specified in the
Technical Specifications (Clause B-9) and Chapter VI of Part I of this Guideline).
i
Construction Tolerances for Earthworks
The dimensional tolerance for finished lines, grades and formations of earthworks after
trimming, unless specified elsewhere or instructed by the Engineer, shall be:
(b) Roads
Formation level - 0cm + 5cm
Formation width - 0cm +10cm
Alignment ± 5cm
