4. DETAIL OF WORKS (EXECUTION & METHOD)

4.1 Material to be Used

The materials required for embankment shall be obtained from excavation of canals,
drains and structures as specified in Clause B-3.4 hereof. The suitable materials for
embankment from excavated material along the canal shall be classified and
approved by the Engineer.
If such excavated materials are insufficient in the quantity for the requirement and
are not suitable for embankment or where the use of materials is not practicable, as
determined by the Engineer, the Contractor shall furnish the embankment material
from borrow areas specified in the subsequent Clause B-5.3 hereof or otherwise
approved sources by the Engineer.
The borrow area shall be cleared and grubbed and be carefully stripped such organic
materials as sod, topsoil and root as specified in Clause B-1 and B-2, so that the
excavated materials in the borrow area shall not contain any stump, brush, root,
weed, turf, clod and matter that may decay.
As far as practicable, the moisture content of materials shall be conditioned in the
borrow area before excavation, by irrigation into the borrow area until optimum
moisture can be introduced or by excavation of drianage or trenches for reducing
excessive moisture.
Where the practicable, suitable matreials for embankment shall be excavated
separately from the materials to be wasted and the suitable materials shall be
segregated by loads during the excavation operations and placed in the designated
final locations directly from the excavation, or my be placed in temporary stockpiles
and later placed in the designated locations, as directed bu the Engineer.
The excavated materials which are suitable for embankent after drainage but which
are too wet fro immediate compaction when excavated, shall be placed temporarily in
the stockpile approved by the Engineer until the moisture content is reduced
sufficiently to permit them to be palced in the embankment, or with the specific
approval of the Engineer, they may be placed in the embankment when it is
practicable as determined by the Engineer to dry such wet materials in the places of
embankment until the moisture content is reduced sufficiently to permit compaction
as specified in Clause B-5.4 hereof.

approved by the Engineers). Followed by spreading by using a bulldozer.

have reached a certain height, then later do the triming and excavation of canal that had
been planned in advance (according to working drawings).

5. QUALITY PLAN

Before commences embankment work, the ground under embankments shall first be
cleared and stripped.
Field and laboratory tests of earth fill soil materials shall be carried out by the Contractor
at his own laboratory or the laboratory approved by the Engineer. The test for fill
materials shall include the specific gravity test, grain size analysis, test on liquid limit and
plastic limit, moisture-density relation test, etc.
Suitable materials from excavation will be used under these Specifications as embankment
after review of laboratory test results and approval by Engineers.

5.1 Placing and Compaction

Prior to carry the material to the site, the foundation shall be cleared and stripped as
specified in the technical specification and well dried to secure traffic-ability for
hauling equipment, for which installation of drainage facilities such as drainage
channel and drain pumps may be required.
Material carried by hauling equipment shall be placed in proper intervals in
consideration of spreading depth as well as moving distance and direction of
bulldozer, since bulldozer can be most effective in shorter distance than 60m to 70m.
Spreading work is important for keeping even compaction to secure impermeability of
the bank, so that it is necessary to carefully spread the material so as not to be thicker
depth than the proper depth, not more than 30cm, specified in the technical
specification and as resulted in the trial embankment.
For compaction work, it is important to choose suitable equipment depending on the
soil description, and to evenly compact overall portion to avoid unequal settlement,
particularly the edge of embankment must be carefully compacted since the portion is
apt to be insufficient compaction. Since the quality of embankment is mainly
determined by relation among spreading depth, description of compaction equipment,
number of passes and moisture content, the most effective combination must be found
from the trial embankment.
The dry density of the soil compacted shall not be less than 93% of maximum dry
density.

5.2 Water Content

(1) Range for Controlling
Relation among moisture content, dry density and permeability should be well
considered to achieve required quality of the embankment work. As a characteristic of
compacted soil, permeability coefficient becomes minimum value in a little exceeded
range from the maximum dry density. However, for keeping adequate traffic-ability, it
is recommended that this range is limited within 3% from the optimum moisture
content. While, in the dry side of the maximum dry density, permeability becomes
drastically large as moisture content becomes smaller against that the traffic-ability

i
becomes good. To obtain the adequate impermeability, moisture content in dry side
from the optimum water content is recommended to limit -2%. Furthermore, in case
that the embankment is compacted in lower moisture content, it needs to pay attention
to the safety of slope as the shear strength of the soil is diminished under rainfall or
submerged condition as such soil has much air voids which absorb the water. From
the reason above, the range of water content for compaction is recommended to
control within O.M.C. – 2% to O.M.C. +3%.

(2) Method of Controlling Water Content

Inspections are responsible for controlling water content of the soils to the value of
“Optimum for compaction” and assuring moisture’s uniformity throughout the layer to
be compacted, for which when a large amount of water is required, the moisture
content should be controlled at the borrow pit or point of excavation and only
supplemental sprinkling should be made at the construction site. Mixing after
sprinkling is required to produce a uniform moisture condition throughout the layer
before compaction. Inspection of moisture uniformity should be frequently made just
prior to the compaction. Excavated or borrowed materials with high moisture content
should be spread in thin layers and dried sufficiently.
If the test results of moisture content failed, compaction cannot be allowed, and after
compaction if density test failed, no construction of next layer is allowed.

5.3 Control Standard

1. Moisture Content
As shown in Check list Form EF-03, if the moisture content is not within the range, -
2% <OMC<3%, compaction work cannot be started.
2. Density Test
Sampling for density test is executed in three (3) holes for every layer with every
200m length. All of the test results shall be more than the specified density, 93% of
maximum dry density. When the results of tests pass, the next layer can be
constructed, if failed, re-construction shall be executed.

5.4 Tolerance
The following values are set as tolerance of the earthworks in detail as specified in the
Technical Specifications (Clause B-9) and Chapter VI of Part I of this Guideline).

i
Construction Tolerances for Earthworks
The dimensional tolerance for finished lines, grades and formations of earthworks after
trimming, unless specified elsewhere or instructed by the Engineer, shall be:

(a) Irrigation Canals, Drainage Canals and Earthwork for Structures
