2.3 GEOLOGY:

2.3.1 REGIONAL GEOLOGY:

The rocks in this region consist of varied mixed gneisses and charnockite of Archaean.
Due to intense metamorphism coupled with intrusive activities, these rock formations seen as
heterogeneous assemblages of metamorphic facies. The arenaceous facies are represented
by the quartzite rocks and argillaceous facies are represented by calc gneiss and calcareous
facies are represented by crystalline limestone respectively. These rocks are generally termed
as granulitic group of rocks.

The rocks in this region consist of varied mixed gneisses and Charnockite of Archaean.
Due to intense metamorphism coupled with intrusive activities, these rock formations seen as
heterogeneous assemblages of metamorphic facies. The arenaceous facies are represented
by quartzite rocks and argillaceous facies are represented by calc gneiss and calcareous facies
are represented by crystalline limestone respectively. These rocks are generally termed as
granulitic group of rocks. The rocks occurring in mining lease holds are metamorphosed
crystalline limestone, associated with calc weathered gneiss and quartzite of Archaean. The
limestone seen in this area is occurring as a narrow linear band with high Magnesia content,
quartzite, pyroxene granulate and Charnockite. The Pyroxene granulites and magnesia
limestone is seen as small patches. There is no fault observed in this area. Geological plan and
cross sections are given as Figure No - __ & __.

2.4 EXPLORATION:
In order to ascertain the depth persistence of limestone and its grade a detailed
borehole prospecting work was undertaken in this area. Totally 11 boreholes were drilled for a
total meterage of 183.25 m in this mining lease area with a grid interval of 100 m X 50-70m.
During detailed exploration in this lease area, the deepest borehole drilled in this area is 25.0
m. The locations of the Bore holes were selected in such a manner to cover the entire mining
lease area and also different limestone bands. Based on the above drilling data the reserves
in the mining lease area have been classified in to Proved Mineral Reserves (111) category.

2.5 RESERVES & WASTE:

The estimation of reserves of this area was done based on geological cross section
method by drawing sections at 50m interval. The sectional areas have been calculated based
on the thickness of limestone enumerated in the drill holes drilled at every 50 m interval. The
volume was calculated by multiplying the sectional influence with the sectional area of the
deposit in the respective sections. The volume is then multiplied with bulk density, which is
generally taken as 2.5 t/cu.m for this type of deposit. The entire reserves were estimated as
per the guidelines given in UNFC. The total Magnesia limestone reserves available mining
lease hold is 2.41 Lakh tonnes. The summary of updated reserves and resources are given
below:

2.7.3 LIFE OF MINE:

The anticipated life of the mine will be about 20 years as per the production proposals in
the approved mining plan.

Mining Method:

Mechanised mining method with conventional drilling and blasting will be adopted in the mine.
The primary hole drilled by 115 mm dia DTH drills are loaded with explosives and detonated by
short delay electric detonators. Blasting is done by controlled basting technique using imported
Sequential Timer Blasting Machine to conduct safe blasting. By using the Sequential Timer
Blasting Machine, fly rocks, ground vibration and noise are totally controlled. There is no
secondary blasting in the mine. The blasted materials are loaded to 10 to 20 T capacity trucks
by deploying PC300 type hydraulic excavator. The mine will be worked in 5 to 10 m slices and
the ultimate size of the benches will be 10m x 10m, with the bench slope angles of 60° and an
ultimate pit slope of 45°. The ramp gradient kept minimum of 1 in 16.

2.11 MAN POWER:

These mining leases are being (G.O No. 813, 526 & 133) worked contiguously on
direct basis works out to 18. Indirectly more than 100 people derive benefit due to allied
service sectors like trading, logistics, casual labor needs, green belt development etc.,

2.12 WATER AVAILABILITY AND WATER NEEDS:

Total water requirements for all the ML operations (GO no 813, 526 and 133) will be as
follows:

 Domestic - 1.5 Cu.m/day

 Water sprinkling / dust suppression - 16.0 Cu.m/day
 Green belt/plantation - 10.0 Cu.m/day
-----
27.5 Cu.m/day
-------
Industrial water requirement like dust suppression, green belt, etc. will be met from
mine sump water & bore well. Drinking water requirement will be met from own bore well.

2.13 SITE SERVICES :

Common site services like mine office, first aid room, rest shelters, toilets, already
existing in the mines. ICL is having a common workshop facilities in Sethurayanpudur workings
of Nanjankulam (Regrouped) Limestone mine (G.O.Ms.No 762). Licensed Magazine located at
Ramayanpatti village is used commonly for Nanjankulam regrouped mines and Tenkulam mines
for storage of explosives. There will not be any storage of explosives in the site.

2.14 ELECTRICITY REQUIREMENTS :

Electricity requirement for both the ML operations will be 25000 units / annum and it will
be met from the TNEB grid.

2.15 EFFLUENT SYSTEMS:

The only effluents arising from the combined mine lease will be domestic waste water to
the tune of about 0.6 KLD. This will be suitably discharged into the septic tank with soak pits.

2.16 FINAL PRODUCT MARKETING :

The entire output of limestone including subgrade high magnesia limestone is being
used for cement manufacture in ICL at Sankarnagar, as stated earlier.

2.17 LINEAR SCHEMATIC SYSTEM FOR PRODUCT USE:

Entire limestone output is being supplied to the crusher in the cement plant of M/s The
India cements at Sankarnagar. After physical sizing of products in the crusher, the crushed
limestone is passed through vertical roller mills for finer grinding. Along with limestone, additives
are being added to maintain required qualitative standards of raw meal. Raw meal will be sent
through kiln for clinkerisation and the clinker will be ground to fine cement with gypsum and fly
ash.

2.18 ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL MEASURES BEING ENFORCED IN PRESENT

WORKS:
Elaborate analysis on impacts and mitigation measures adopted now and to be adopted
for proposed enhanced production is dealt in Chapter IV. However, the enforced environmental
protection measures adopted as follows:
The environmental monitoring and control measures already adopted in the on – going
mining operation have been very effective and there is no adverse impact on the environment
since the inception of the mining operations.
Hence the existing mitigative measures will be continued with modifications, if and when
necessary, during enhanced production.
Accordingly the major environmental management specific to this project, are as given
below.
1. Periodical monitoring of air, water, soil, noise, etc.
2. Fugitive dust control measures.
3. OB dump stability betterment with vegetation, construction of retention wall, etc.,
4. Plantation and green belt development in and around mining area.

5. Mine water discharge and water quality control measures.

6. Mined out area reclamation measures.
7. Health and safety implementation measures.
8. Social welfare schemes undertaken by project proponent.
9. Suitable organizational set – up with adequate funding for overall environmental
management.
As good environmental preservation is being one of the prime corporate motive
of the project proponent, it is certain that the post – expansion activity will not have any
additional impact on environmental equilibrium in the study area.
