BE an EXEPTIONAL TEACHER!

You may be on a high premium person of EXPERTISE in your field, but might be lacking teaching
experience or formal preparation in PEDAGOGY.
Knowledge of subject area is just half of what’s needed to teach well.
Teachers who haven’t learned the most basic principles of delivering instruction are destined
to repeat the mistakes of delivering content in most INEFFECTIVE METHODS POSSIBLE.
Recommendations for enhancing student’s learning abilities.
Worth Trying:
1. KNOW YOUR STUDENTS
Map the highest and the lowest respond to your style of teaching. Keep adjusting and
fine tuning your style of teaching on the student’s learning continuum.
Let this guide most of your instructional decisions. It’s going to influence how you plan
your course and your lessons.

2. IMPLEMENT “COLD CALLING” AND “NO OPT OUT”

With COLD CALLING, instead of calling only on students who volunteer, you can “COLD
CALLS” students randomly, including those whose hands are down.
DO NOT use this technique for catching students those who are not focusing. The
minute you do that, they’ll resent. COLD CALLING has to be done in good faith. It has
to give everyone a chance to shine.

NO OPT OUT, should be used when students give an “I don’t know” response.
Students know that when they say, ‘I don’t know,’ the teacher will probably ask
someone else, and they can just keep saying ‘I don’t know’ and never have to
participate.
Instead of letting this happen, “ASK that same question to another student, and then
go back to the first student and ask him or she to repeat what another student just
responded. This holds that student accountable for listening.
Example if you asked, Sunil, what is the use of Plaster of Paris? and Sunil says, ‘I don’t
know,’ then you go to someone else, let’s say Rahul and ask him to help Sunil in finding
what’s the answer?’ and then Rahul explains whatever his answer is, and then you go
back to Sunil, and ask him to repeat what Rahul just said. This holds Sunil accountable
for listening. Both COLD CALLING and NO OPT OUT works best when you have a good
relationship with students.

3. BUILD STRONG REFERENCE and then move to CONTEXT

A typical college class starts with some kind of lecture.
If teachers start with some kind of engaging activity and then following it up with direct
instruction, students will have a context for the information and will be more engaged.
By starting class with a meaningful reference, discussion, question students’ minds are
primed and more receptive for the instruction. By just being creative we could achieve
this in every single class. Even if we’re in the middle of a semester and even if your
course calendar is tightly planned, this is a strategy you can start to use right away.

4. DESIGN MEANINGFUL LEARNING EXPERIENCES

Think of your role less as a ‘teacher’ and more as a designer of meaningful learning
experiences. Think about what experience can you create that’ll allow students to
understand the content.
Maybe it’s a TEAM activity
Maybe it’s a debate
Maybe it’s a video.

5. DO NOT WASTE TIME DICTATING

SHARE YOUR VALUABLE CLASS SUMMARY/GLOSSARY/POINTS TO REMEMBER
Students would respect you for your concern for them. Do share

Focus on creating meaningful learning experiences in every single class, because that shift
in mind-set, should help in putting you in that elite status of GREAT PROFESSORS.

Happy Teaching!
