Chapter II

METHODOLOGY

(Provide a brief introduction on the chapter)(What the chapter is all about?)

Method/Design

The study will utilize the qualitative design using the phenomenological tradition

to (action of the research) the (foci/outcome) of the 12-ICT students at University of the

Visayas – Dalaguete Campus, Qualitative research uses detailed description and

information from the perspective of the research informants themselves as means of

examining specific issues and problems understudy. Qualitative data is concerned with

non-statistical method of inquiry and analysis of social phenomena. It draws on the

inductive process in which themes categories emerged through analysis of data collected

by such techniques like interview.

Environment

The study will be conducted at the Room of the 12-ICT students. It has a

population of 50, Room of the 12-ICT student is located at University of the Visayas –

Dalaguete Campus, Suba, Poblacion, Dalaguete, Cebu.

Informants

Informants of the study will be the 12-ICT students of University of the Visayas –

Dalaguete Campus who were students of the said university. The Criterion Sampling

Method was used in the selection of informants. The informants should be a bona fide
student of 12-ICT. In this manner, the informants can give a richness of information that

is suitable for this research. There will be 10 of informants to be utilized in this study

which will be composed of five males and five females. The identities of these informants

will be held confidential for compliance.

Instrument

Interview schedule will be used in this study. This interview schedule is

researcher-made questions guided by the principles of philosophical studies. Interview

questions will be semi-structured. The interview schedule has 2 parts: First, will be their

lived experiences about Adobe Flash. Second, will be their challenges encountered in

using Adobe Flash.

Data Gathering Procedures

Prior to the approval to conduct this study, I will ask the permission of the School

Administrator of the University of the Visayas – Dalaguete Campus. A letter will also be

sent to the informants chosen on the basis of the criteria that will inform them of the

purpose of the research undertaking and ask for their cooperation in answering the semi-

structured interview schedule. I personally will administer the interview by meeting the

informants at Room of the 12-ICT student. Proper instructions were given to the

informants before the start of the interview. Data will be recorded using a cassette/voice

recorder. Interview will be done using the language most familiar to the informants

which then be transcribed and translated in English. One informant will be interviewed

at a time until data saturation point is reached. After data analysis and finding, data will

be store in a place where only the researcher can access then destroy it after one year.
Data Analysis

In the analysis of data, we used the Collaizi’s Method of analysis. The Collaizi’s

method of analysis involves the following steps. First, each transcript should be read and

re-read in order to obtain a general sense about the whole content; Second, for each

transcript, significant statements that pertains to the phenomenon under study should be

extracted. These statements must be recorded on a separate sheet noting their pages and

line numbers; Third, meanings should be formulated from these significant statements;

Fourth, the formulated meanings should be sorted into categories, clusters of themes, and

themes; Fifth, the findings of the study should be integrated into an exhaustive

description of the phenomenon under study; Sixth, the fundamental structure of the

phenomenon should be described; Seventh, finally validation of the findings should be

sought from the research informants to compare the researchers’ descriptive results with

their experiences.

Each transcript will be read several times to gain a sense of the whole content.

During this stage, any thoughts, feelings, and ideas that arose by the researcher with

regards to the (study at hand). It will help describe the phenomena as experienced by the

informants themselves.

Significant themes were extracted from the transcripts and meanings were

formulated regarding the (study at hand), (discuss depending upon the number of parts

in your interview schedule or the number of research questions you have)

Ethical Considerations
In the conduct of the study, I will take into consideration through ethical concerns

by conducting the study the permit to promote ethicality and knowing that I will be

dealing with human subjects. I will anticipate any ethical issues that may arise on the

(action of the research) of (study at hand/topic). To protect the informants of the study,

I developed trust with them, promoting the integrity of the research. Moreover,

respecting the rights, needs, values, reputation and identities of the informants must be

held confidential since the findings of the study could be shared with other people and

organizations.

Acknowledgement of Bias

Biases will be prevented through the use of the semi-structured interview guide by

being subjective and the need to comprehend well the data taken on the basis of the

interview. By acknowledging my bias, I will enter the field without preconceived ideas

about the subject, of what may be discovered or where it may lead. Thus, I will have to

disclose information which may affect understanding.

Trustworthiness

In the conduct of the study, I will ensure trustworthiness in providing and strength

to the study validity and reliability in all stages including data collection, data analysis

and descriptions. Trustworthiness approaches like credibility, dependability, authenticity,

and conformability will be undertaken through the study process.

It is credible because I will analyze data through a process of reflecting, sifting,

exploring, and judging its relevance, meaning, and developing themes and essences that
accurately depict their experiences. I will establish dependability with the audit trial

which involved maintaining and preserving all transcripts, notes, and videotapes. I will

employ reporting for authenticity in such a way that it maintains respect for the context of

the data and presents all perspectives equally so that the reader can arrive at an impartial

decision. Lastly, I will observe conformability which will be determined by linking the

data to the other sources most especially on the triangulation of data.

Tips for chapter I

Chapter I

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

 Does the introduction present a clear exposition of the topic

o What makes the research necessary?

o Provides a “narrative hook” to the reader

 Causes the reader to pay attention and elicits an emotional and

attitudinal response.

 It causes the reader to continue reading

 Is the introduction supported by scholarly evidences?

o Cites some readings to support the present study

o What do other authors say about the study?

 Cites a problematic situation which prompted you to conduct the study.

o Presents the justification of the study

o Discussions claimed should be with the legal basis relevant to the study.

o May present pertinent statistical data that could support the claims.

 Is the the GAP addressed?

o How will you address the gap or problems?

o Cites the reason for conducting the study

o The introduction should be two to four pages only

Atheoritical Stance

 Suspension of the use of theories and related literatures to avoid biases.

Sample:

The researcher decided to keep away from referring to any theoretical framework,

linguistic notion or principle in the whole phase of this study. This is to primarily uphold

a raw and unbiased study treatment to the structural analysis of the Cebuano-Visayan
language. While this research aims to identify a specific linguistic notion through

studying morphological variation of the language, it is expedient that the research will not

be predisposed by prevailing studies so to get a first-hand and raw findings to formulate a

specific theoretical stance that will support whatever the resulting claims this study will

produce in the end. Primarily, this study will focus only on the structural analysis of the

morphological variations through data gathered and their interpretation as collated by the

researcher. However, this research will highlight the philosophical stances of the

researcher. It is highlighted that a research study must be ensured of its reliability and

validity through the use of the appropriate questions especially in asking informants of

their knowledge, views, opinions to the subject matter as well as the differences of which

that prevail. The philosophical stance is also the foundation of a qualitative research since

it is viewed from a very subjective standpoint.

Philosophical Stance

 Create assumptions only to be proven after conducting the research

 This serves as your guide in conducting the study

Domain of Inquiry

 Is the problem stated unambiguously and is it easy to identify?

 Does the problem stated build a cogent and persuasive argument for the new

study?

Significance of the Study

 This segment renders a detailed exposition of the importance of the study to

various sectors such as the:

o Management

o Workplace

o Clients

o Suppliers; and the

o General public

 The researchers need to identify those who are to benefit from the study such as:

o People

o Institutions; and

o Agencies

 The researchers need to cite how they will be benefited from the findings of the

research

 The researchers should not fail to include the other researchers as beneficiaries

and what they are expected to benefit

Sample:

The researcher as a teacher will always look forward to the betterment of the

students as prime beneficiaries in the school. As per experienced, being a teacher in

school most students do not get proper nutrition, lack the cooking skills, bad eating habits

and the love of junk foods. Being a teacher I opted to conduct this study addressing the

problem I had observed.

The finding of this study will benefit the following:

Students. The result of the study may encourage students to consider small

business as another source of income. They will also teach parents and siblings at homw

to start small businesses.

Other Beneficiaries: Teachers, principals, businessmen, parents, community, and future

researchers

Definition of Terms

 Determine key terms used in the study

 Identify significant terms in the title and in the specific problems

 Terms to be defined should be arrange alphabetically

 Define terms conceptually (definitions from the dictionary, encyclopedia, books,

etc…) first then define operationally (how the terms were used in your study).

Always observe proper format

Font: Size 12, Times New Roman Spacing: Double

Paragraph: Justified Margins: Left – 1.5”; Right, top, and bottom – 1”
