Net Force – Problems

1. A wagon of mass 20 kg is pulled with a constant force of 18 N. If the

force of friction is 6 N, what will the resulting acceleration of the mass
be?
2. Two forces, one of 8 N North and the other 6 N East, pull an object of mass 6 kg.
a) If the maximum force of friction between the object and the table is 12 N, what
would be the acceleration of the object?
b) If the force of friction was reduced to 8 N, what would be the acceleration of the
mass (include direction)
3. Two forces, of 5 N directed 30 W of N, and 4 N directed West, act on an object of
mass 2.0 kg. If the force needed to overcome friction is 3.0 N, give the magnitude and
direction of the acceleration experienced by the mass.
4. A dry ice puck of mass 2.0 kg is initially at rest on a frictionless table. A force of 10.0
N is applied and acts at an angle of 45 up from horizontal, for 2.0 seconds.
a) Find the final velocity of the puck.
b) Find the distance it traveled.
5. A man pulls on a 10.0 kg sled with a force of 40.0 N, directed 40 up from horizontal.
If the force of friction is 12.0 N, find the resulting acceleration of the sled.
6. A 1000 kg car moves eastward along a horizontal road at 12 m/s. If the brakes are
applied and the car is brought to rest in 6.0 seconds with uniform acceleration, what
constant force acted on the car?
7. If you apply a force of 18 N to a 8 kg cart but have to overcome a frictional force of 6
N, what will the resulting acceleration of the cart be? b) If the cart starts from rest,
how far will it travel in 5 seconds?
8. A force of 50.0 N is applied to a 12 kg sled at 36.9 above the horizontal. The
frictional force is 4.0 N. Find the net horizontal force experienced by the sled. If the
sled starts from rest. How many seconds will it take to travel 150 m?
9. A 3.00 kg cart is moving at 24 m/s in an easterly direction. A certain force begins
acting on the cart and 2.0 seconds later, the velocity of the cart is only 6.0 m/s.
Determine what the constant force was.
10. A 0.8 kg body is initially at rest, and 2 forces begin to act on it. One is a force of 2.5
N North, the other is a force of 6.0 N East. If the object is actually observed to move a
distance of 10 m in 2.0 seconds, find the force of friction that is acting.
11. A mass of 2.5 kg is moved a distance of 32.0 m in 4.0 seconds, starting from rest. If a
force of 45 N was applied to the mass, what is the force of friction?
12. A force of 60 N acts upward at an angle of 53.1 with respect to the horizontal on a
sled of mass 4.00 kg. If the force of friction is 8.00 N, find the velocity of the sled
after 3.00 seconds.
