Dear Parents & Community Partners,

Our 7th grade Language Arts Department is excited to launch our

5th year of our iRead program. The program is based on the
research of Donalyn Miller (The Book Whisperer, Reading in the
Wild). Basically, we believe all students, regardless of their reading
level, are highly capable readers. We believe that empowering
students to read a lot and experience different genres can light a
spark to create lifelong readers. Becoming a confident, lifelong reader is an important step to success in any
career field a student may choose.
We originally created the iRead program which required all students to read 30 books (in a variety of
genres) during the school year. Amazingly, many students achieved this goal. Even students who had never
thought of themselves as “readers” found that they had it in them. The increase in motivation and individual
students’ reading levels was very exciting! We will now encourage students to read 12 books a trimester with
twice-a-trimester rewards to encourage students along the way. Students who read an entire bingo card (36
books) will be awarded with a celebration, an iRead t-shirt and candy bar. We expected a small number of
students to make this achievement, but to our delight, the numbers have continued to grow each year!
The excitement generated was tangible in the school as we ran the iRead program last year. We
anticipate this year’s 7th graders will do even better than our group last year. Unfortunately, we have limited
funding for this program and we are turning to our community partners, asking for help in sponsoring our iRead
Club t-shirts, bingo rewards and an end-of-year party. We are asking for donations to help fund our iRead
program, which has such an overwhelmingly positive impact on students. We want this to also benefit sponsors,
so if you chose to donate, we will put your company logo on the shirts as well as give you props on our blogs
and correspondence with parents. The goal is to showcase your company as a community sponsor who sees the
value of creating lifelong readers.
Thank you in advance for your support of our 7th graders’ achievement in the iRead program. Please
contact Mrs. Robins at (435) 652-4742 with any questions.

Best,
7th grade Language Arts (Rachel Robins, Jennifer Wallace, Jandi Gubler, Jenny Crowton)

*Please return the form below with a check made out to Lava Ridge Intermediate School if you are interested. You
may also send your company logo to rachel.robins@washk12.org. We will begin to design the shirts on
September 7th, so please get us your logo before then.

read 40 books!”
