PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR DENGUE PRONE PLACES 1

HOLY ANGEL UNIVERSITY

A Qualitative Study: A preventive measures for dengue prone places

“Treatment without prevention is simply unsustainable.” – Bill Gates

The Background of the Study

As a grade 12 STEM student, we conducted this study to know the thoughts and

insight of the students about dengue cases around our University. The thoughts and insights

how Holy Angel University is prone about the cases. Also, the thoughts and insights about

harm they can get because of the danger getting dengue. We also want to know the

difficulties of janitor and maintenance for the students can avoid dengue. Because I myself

experienced dengue and I don’t know why and did where I get the virus. So we want to

prevent dengue to help other students not to be victim. There are also factors that are

responsible for the dengue cases which include the surrounding of the University such us

improper garbage disposal, and improper segregation of trash. We will conduct this to reduce

the victims of dengue cases in our University.

The researchers study conducted inside the University of Holy Angel to be specific.

The building that are near to the dumpsites of Holy Angel University, because we all know

that the dengue usually form from dirty places and because of stagnant water therefore, the

study conducted on the SJH Building (Saint Joseph Hall Building) because on that building it

is more possible dengue can occur or form.

According to DOH (2015). Dengue is the fastest spreading vector-borne disease in

the endemic in 100 countries. Dengue virus has four soretype ( DENV1, DENV2, DENV3,

and DENV4) Dengue has no treatment but the disease can be early managed.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR DENGUE PRONE PLACES 2
HOLY ANGEL UNIVERSITY

According to Anil Kumar, M (2014) stated that until solid waste is properly managed,

dengue and larvae are bound to be a scourge.

Dengue fever, a very old disease, has reemerged in the past 20years with an

expanded geographic distribution of both the viruses and the mosquito vectors, increased

epidemic activity. In the first five months of 2017, Philippines health officials recorded

nearly 41,000 dengue fever cases.

From 1st of January to 26th of May 2018, dengue cases nationwide now reach 37,959.

There were 195 deaths recorded. Most affected group belong to the 10-14 years old with

males comprising 52% of all cases.

A grade 12 STEM student, Piolo Enriquez has a dengue. The main objective of the

study is to determine the causes of dengue. And to prevent and lessen dengue cases at Holy

Angel University, which will result to a positive impact to the student.

The overall purpose of the study is for the beneficiaries to know more about the

causes and effects of having a dengue. Also, this study provides recommendations on how to

prevent it to entering inside a person’s body.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

According to Shiela Crisostomo (2011) The number of dengue cases in the country in

nearing the 20,000 mark, the Department of Health(DOH) said. A report from National

Epidemiology Center (NEC) showed that from January 1 to April 2, a total of 17,228

individuals have contracted dengue.

Stated Centre for Health Protection (CHP) that to reduce the risk of infection spread

by mosquitoes, apart from general measures, travellers returning from affected areas should

apply insect repellent for 14 days (DF) or at least 21 days (Zika Virus Infection) upon arrival

in Philippines. If feeling unwell, seek medical advice promptly and provide travel details to

the doctor. DEET-containing insect repellents are effective

According to Li Ping Wong, et al (2013) Preventing or reducing dengue virus

transmission depends largely on controlling the mosquito vectors. As such, in most dengue

endemic countries, anti-dengue campaign involved media bombardment with messages to

eradicate the Aedes spp. mosquitoes to the point that Aedes spp. is synonymous with dengue

According to Muhammad Qasim(2015), solid waste management: key to avoid

dengue fever outbreak in future. It is important that during the peak season for transmission

of dengue fever from August to November, the concerned authorities in both the federal and

the provincial governments elaborate a lot to prevent outbreak in future but practically a lot is

yet to be done for the purpose as one can easily witness heaps of garbage in almost all

localities of the regions.

Dengue disease surveillance and vector surveillance are presumed to detect dengue

outbreaks at an early stage and to save- through early response activities- resources, and

reduce the social and economic impact of outbreaks on individuals, health systems and

economies. The aim of this study is to unveil evidence on the cost of dengue outbreaks.

Farlow, . et al. (2013)

According to Edillo, R.E., (2013). Dengue illness is the most important mosquito-

borne viral disease in the world. It is epidemic in the Philippines and considered one of its

eight pervasive infectious disease. In additional to urbanization, increasing population,

inadequate public health infrastructure, poor solid waste management, and lack of an

effective mosquito surveillance system to contribute to the growing dengue challenge

Group advocates for proper waste management to beat dengue menace. The Eco

Waste Coalition has called on the local authorities and the general public to embrace

ecological solid waste management (ESWM) as a practical strategy to address the dengue

scourge. Water storage containers, drums, pails, and other artificial or natural water

containers that are within or near to places where people reside are natural breeding habitats

for Aedes aegypti mosquitos. EcoWaste Coalition (2018)

According to Mridula Ramesh (2017), with dengue on the rise, waste management is

first step in winning war against the disease. The disease requires careful monitoring and

care. Mosquitos can breed in pockets of water. Dengue is, to start-up slang, a hyper-local
PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR DENGUE PRONE PLACES 5
HOLY ANGEL UNIVERSITY

start-up, with solid waste providing its seed funding. Prevention is always better than cure;

this is something we can do proactively. If we want to solve our dengue problem, managing

our waste is probably the best place to start.

Even if dengue cases are traditionally high during the rainy season, or during

the period from July to November, a health official here discussed Saturday the possibility

that dengue cases may also rise during the hot season especially with the presence of El

Nino, as local residents here are expected to save more water using uncovered containers

which may serve as good breeding grounds for dengue-carrying mosquitos. Phoebe Jen

Indino (2013)

Theoretical Framework

“Evolving the Theory of Waste Management: defining key concepts” is the title by E.

Pongracz, P.S. Phillips & R.L Keiski. This theory states that the Theory of Waste

Management represents a more in-depth account of the domain and contains conceptual

analyses of waste, the activity upon waste, and a holistic view of the goals of waste

management. In this theory, Waste Management Theory is founded on the expectation that

waste management is to prevent waste causing harm to human health and the environment.

The relationship of this theory to the study is that they are both about waste management and

prevention of harm to human health. Their goal is to prevent diseases such as dengue and

help save the nature by proper waste management and make a safe and clean environment for

a better future.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this qualitative design is to develop products, and understand the

dengue victims at Holy Angel University, at this stage of research, dengue will be defined as

an acute infectious disease caused by a flavivirus by aedes mosquitos, and characterized by

headache, and severe joint pain.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The variables included are the students who had experienced dengue fever.

This study doesn’t include those students who did not experience dengue fever because they

cannot give any information about the study. This study focuses the experience of the student
PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR DENGUE PRONE PLACES 7
HOLY ANGEL UNIVERSITY

who suffers dengue and what can the researchers do to prevent it. The researchers want to

know what their experiences are and reflect to it and also inform others who don’t suffer it

for them to be aware what to do when dengue come in their way. Students who suffered in

dengue disease are the one who experience this kind of phenomena and because of these they

can share their thoughts and experiences that would help the researchers to find the answer to

their research study which is preventing dengue. The data will be gathered at Holy Angel

University, especially at SJH (Saint Joseph Hall) where the chosen participants are located

and we will gather data when the questionnaires are ready. We will gather data where they

are located for their convenience and so that we will not bother them that much. It will also

be an advantage for us to see and observe their place.

Significance of the Study

The people who will benefit from this study are not only the students but the whole

school community. This research paper can be significant, by giving information on how to

prevent dengue by using the data gathered from the participants of this study.

The beneficiaries in this study are the teachers, students, and future researchers. The

teachers will benefit from this study because it can give them additional knowledge to

prevent dengue, they can share this knowledge to their students, and they are the one who can

publish or approve our research. The student on the other hand will benefits from this

because it can be a new knowledge for them, they can apply our study on their lives to

prevent dengue and it will serve as a guide for them on how to prevent dengue viruses. Lastly

to the future researchers this can be a basis or a related study for their future research, they

Participants

The population of our study are the Senior High School dengue victims around Hoy

Angel University, especially in Saint Joseph Hall, where it is located near the dumpsites. The

population in our study must be handpicked or selected thoroughly because our study aims to

know the insights or experiences of a dengue victim. Our Participants our limited for Senior

High School students only, students has experienced dengue. The chosen participants are the

one who has experienced dengue so that they can provide additional information in our study.

Sample Size

Our sample ranges 1-5 per section because not all students experience dengue that is

why our sample is very limited. We arrive at this sample because our study is qualitative

researches which there are priorities in our study.

Sampling Method

Purposive Sampling method, we chose this method because our study purpose is to

prevent dengue cases in the SJH at Holy Angel University, We choose this method because

the participants our limited and only the dengue victims only.

Research Design

Discussion

This study concludes that, lack of proper irrigation and lack in prevention is the main

cause of dengue in our school community. Students who suffered in dengue stated that they

did not do preventive measure that is why they suffer dengue and experienced struggle both

in personal and academic way.. With dengue on the rise, waste management is first step in

winning war against the disease. The disease requires careful monitoring and care. Mosquitos

can breed in pockets of water.

THE VOCABULARY KNOWLEDGE AND LISTENING 15

With the given conclusions, the researchers recommend that the school should

conduct seminars or use campaign materials that could use as awareness in preventing

dengue cases in our school that could help not just the students of Holy Angel University but

the whole school community.
