I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the class discussion, at least 80% the students are expected to:
1. define research;
2. discuss the steps on choosing and limiting a topic;
3. provide specific topics on the broad topics given through differentiated tasks;
and
4. share the importance of choosing and limiting a topic in writing a research
paper
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Choosing And Limiting a Topic
Reference/s: Skill Builders for Efficient Reading Book, pp. 243
Materials: Visual Aids, Strips of Paper, Manila Paper, Felt-tip-pen
III. PROCEDURE
A. Preparation
Prayer
Greetings
Checking of Attendance
Reading of House Rules and Objectives
Review
B. Motivation
The teacher will show different examples of topics/titles of a research paper.
The teacher will ask the following questions:
a. Why do people conduct researches?
b. How do the researchers came up with these topics/titles?
C. Activity
The teacher will divide the class into four (4) groups.
The teacher will give words/phrases to the students.
The teacher will arrange the given words/phrases based on what they think is the
very broad, still broad and limited topic.
They will arrange the words/phrases on the Manila paper provided.
They will be given three (3) minutes to do the task.
The group who can identify the very broad to the limited topic will be given five
(5) points.
D. Analysis
The teacher will ask the following questions:
1. What did you do to the words/phrases given to you?
2. Why is that we need to have limitations on the topic/s we are going to
choose in a research paper?
3. What do you think are the steps in choosing and limiting a topic in
writing a research paper?
E. Abstraction
The teacher will ask to the students what a research is.
The teacher will introduce the topic “Choosing and Limiting a Topic.”
The teacher will show the steps on choosing a limiting a topic.
Steps on Choosing a Topic:
Generate ideas/Getting ideas
Do preliminary research/Choose a Topic
Steps on Limiting a Topic:
Ask yourself questions that help you think critically.
(Start with five (5) W’s Who? What? Where? When? Why?)
Ask analytical questions.
(How did this come to be? What are the causes? What are the
results? How does this contrast?) These questions will help a
researcher think a topic.
The teacher will assign one step in each group to be discussed.
They will be given three (3) minutes to brainstorm with their groupmates.
Each group will assign reporter to share their explanations on the step given.
The reporter will be graded based on the rubrics given.
After each group that is done discussing, the teacher will add information and
provide examples on the steps given.
F. Application
The teacher will give differentiated tasks.
The students will do the “roundtable” and think-pair-share”.
The Groups 1 and 3 will do the “roundtable” in which the teacher will give them
very broad topics and they have to choose only one (1) topic.
The members in Groups 1 and 2 should give a specific topic on the very broad
topic chosen by the group.
The Groups 2 and 4 will do the “Think-Pair-Share” in which the teacher will give
very broad topics and they have to find a pair within their group.
Each pair in Groups 2 and 4 will choose a very broad topic and they will decide
what specific topic they are going to make on the broad topic chosen.
Each group will write their specific topics on the Manila paper provided.
They will be given five (5) minutes to do the task.
They will be graded based on scoring system given.
SCORING SYSTEM
25 points The specific/limited topics given by each member in the
group coincides with the broad topics given.
20 points The specific/limited topics given by each member in the
group almost coincides with the broad topics given.
10 points The specific/limited topics given by each member in the
group does not coincides with the broad topics given.
G. Valuing
What is the importance of Choosing and Limiting a topic in writing a
research paper?
IV. EVALUATION
Direction: Each number has two topics. Write the letter which contains a more specific
topic. Write you answer in a ¼ sheet of paper.
V. ASSIGNMENT (Individual)
Direction: On a ¼ sheet of paper, write at least two (2) possible very broad topics
and its specific topics that you are going to write in your research paper.
