• Common Misperceptions
Public understanding of international trade issues is often
hampered by an array of misperceptions.
• Exports are good, imports are bad.
In discussions of a country’s trade balance we often hear term
that are filled with value judgements. For example, a worsenin
trade balance implies that imports are growing faster than exports
while an improving trade balance implies that exports are growin
faster than imports. However, by itself, a trade surplus or deficit
not inherently bad or good.
good Over time, a Malaysian trade defic
must be followed by a Malaysian trade surplus. If this were no
true, then it would imply that other countries are willingly providin
goods to the Malaysia without the expectation of repayment.
