Sumitomo to build new plant in Indonesia


Sumitomo (SHI) Construction Machinery, a wholly
owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, will
be building a new plant in Karawang, about 60 km
east of Jakarta city centre, Indonesia. It will serve as
the company’s construction machinery manufacturing
centre hub for the ASEAN region.
SHI Construction Machinery currently exports
its construction machinery products from its Chiba,
Japan plant to local dealers in the ASEAN region,
who in turn perform and sales and service functions.
For FY2009, the number of units sold to the region
totalled 250. However, with the establishment of this
new plant, sales are expected to hit 1,000 units by
2014. The new facility will produce four types of
excavators including 12 t, 21 t, 24 t and 35 t.
The new Indonesian plant will also carry out sales
and service functions, allowing the company to become
a stable supply source for customers in the region.
