The 300 m long, three span, two pier, concrete balanced cantilever
bridge has been delivered through unusual work hours to meet the tight

Sumitomo to build new plant in Indonesia

Sumitomo (SHI) Construction Machinery, a wholly
owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, will
be building a new plant in Karawang, about 60 km
east of Jakarta city centre, Indonesia. It will serve as
the company’s construction machinery manufacturing
centre hub for the ASEAN region.
SHI Construction Machinery currently exports
its construction machinery products from its Chiba,
Japan plant to local dealers in the ASEAN region,
who in turn perform and sales and service functions.
For FY2009, the number of units sold to the region
totalled 250. However, with the establishment of this
new plant, sales are expected to hit 1,000 units by
2014. The new facility will produce four types of
excavators including 12 t, 21 t, 24 t and 35 t.
The new Indonesian plant will also carry out sales
and service functions, allowing the company to become
a stable supply source for customers in the region.

Zoomlion expands in
Southeast Asia
After a strong entry in the European and American markets,
Zoomlion is now entering the high-end market in the Southeast
Asia region.
The company has signed an agreement with Don Yuan Co
Ltd in Singapore to market its crawler crane. At the same time,
the company has also received orders for its QUY80 and QUY70
crawler cranes.
In Malaysia, Zoomlion has formed a collaboration with
Trans Elite Group Sdn Bhd. Both companies will work closely to
introduce the Zoomlion brand in Malaysia as well as throughout
the Southeast Asia region.
In addition, Zoomlion has opened a branch in Hanoi,
Vietnam. During the opening ceremony, the company received
orders for its QY120 and QY25 hydraulic truck cranes, as well
as its ZD22-3 bulldozer. n

Metso to deliver complete crushing and screening system to
Mount Gibson
Metso has received a contract to supply a complete crushing and screening
system to Mount Gibson Iron for the Extension Hill mine, located north
of Perth in Western Australia.
The delivery will consist of feeders, a jaw crusher and cone crusher,
screen and conveyors. It will also include engineering, structures,
installation and project management of the new plant. The stationary plant
expansion is designed to produce at a rate of 700 metric tons per hour. The
delivery of the system is scheduled to be completed by January 2011.
Mount Gibson Iron is one of the leading independent Australian
hematite iron ore producers. Construction of the Extension Hill hematite
project is scheduled for completion in June 2011. The annual production
of 3 mil t at Extension Hill will lift total Mount Gibson production to 9
mil t per year in 2012. n

Black & Veatch completes first ABC
Waters project in Western Singapore
Black & Veatch has completed the Active, Beautiful, Clean
Waters (ABC Waters) project at Pandan Reservoir.
The national water agency PUB launched the ABC Waters
programme in April 2006, which is aimed to transform
Singapore into a city of gardens and water by turning a
vast network of drains, canals and reservoirs into beautiful
streams, rivers and lakes. Under the programme, nine
projects are currently underway, with seven scheduled for
completion by the end of the year.
Black & Veatch is the Watershed Manager for the Western
Catchment of Singapore. The Pandan Reservoir ABC Waters
project was one of three projects being implemented by
Black & Veatch following its development of the ABC Waters
masterplan for the area. A key feature of the project was the
new amenities centre for water sports, which will be home to
three National Sport Associations in Singapore.
Pandan Reservoir boasts other leisure amenities, such as
the floating Fishing and Viewing Deck, as well as the Radio
Control Sailing and Electric Boating Deck.
Hue City Environment and Water Improvement Project
Black & Veatch has also signed a major surface water drainage
and wastewater treatment contract for the Hue City Water
Environment Improvement Project Management Unit in
Vietnam. The project will help protect the water resources
in the country from the threat of contamination and mitigate
damage caused by flooding.
The implementation period of the project is eight years
with criteria including strengthening of drainage capacity,
mitigation of natural disasters caused by flooding in Hue City
and collection and treatment of wastewater; enhancement of
water quality of the Huong River and other rivers in Hue City;
construction using high quality materials and processes; im-
provement of living conditions and environmental sanitation;
creation of favourable conditions to promote economic devel-
opment in Hue City; and preservation of historical monuments
to help ensure the city’s World Heritage Centre status.
Black & Veatch will lead a consortium of partners to
implement the consulting services for the Project including
Phase 1, and the study and design for Phase 2 (by 2020). Upon
completion of Phase 1, a wastewater treatment plant with a
capacity of 20,000 cu m per day, flood control facilities and
drainage systems will service residents and businesses. n

Snorkel appoints new GM for Australia and New Zealand

“Matthew’s task is to cement
Snorkel as the natural manufacturer
of choice in mobile elevated work
platforms. His goal is to bring about

range, while building the internal protocols and efficiencies to support
our growth,” said Mr Sowden.
Snorkel has a production facility in Levin, New Zealand and
sales centres on North and South Island, plus Australian sales and
service centres in Sydney, Logan City, Perth and Melbourne. Mr
Elvin will be based in Snorkel Australia’s headquarters in Wetherill
Park, Sydney.
Mr Elvin was previously the executive general manager of
industrial and construction equipment distributor Clark Equipment
Australia. His arrival at Snorkel follows three key appointments to
strengthen the Snorkel management team in North America. This is
part of Snorkel’s global strategy to further enhance all aspects of its
customer service, ahead of next year’s expected upturn in demand
for aerial lifts. n

Aconex helps complete Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands project

Aconex has played a vital role in the recent completion of the Marina
Bay Sands Phase 1 project in Singapore.
Since the project began in late 2006, the web-based Aconex
platform has been used by 4,000 people from 300 organisations
to manage project information during design and construction. To
date, team members have stored and exchanged more than 7 million
documents and 20 million mail items using the system.
Aconex was implemented across the entire project to provide
a single, common platform for managing construction related
information. By using the system, all project participants – from the
developer to the subcontractors – can access, distribute, track and
archive their information, at any time and from any location. n

BBR to build residential project in Singapore

BBR Holdings (S) Ltd has entered into a sale and purchase agreement
to acquire a plot of freehold land at 2A/B/C/D Simon Lane in
Singapore for S$86 million. The company aims to develop a low-rise
condominium project on the 9,076.9 sq m site.
The site, currently occupied by four blocks of four-storey walk-up
apartments comprising 52 units, can potentially be developed into a
five-storey condominium comprising about 120 units of around 1,200
sq ft each. The development project is targetted to be launched some
time at the end of 2011.
Located in close proximity to the Kovan MRT Station, the site
is also easily accessible from the Tampines Expressway. Food
outlets and other amenities are conveniently available along Upper
Serangoon Road, Heartland Mall at Kovan Town Centre and the

Hyundai’s new wheel leader factory breaks ground

Hyundai Heavy’s new wheel loader manufacturing factory in Tai’an,
Shandong province, China recently broke ground. With an investment
of US$48 million, the new facility is scheduled to be completed by
May 2011. After which, it will have an annual production capacity of
8,000 units comprising 3 t and 5 t wheel loaders, the highest selling
models in China.
Hyundai Heavy seeks to strengthen its image as an integrated
construction equipment maker in China by aiming to expand its
annual production capacity to 10,000 units within five years.
“China is an attractive wheel loader market with fast annual
production growth rate from 140,000 units in 2009 to 200,000 units
(estimated) in 2010. Hyundai Heavy also strives to make inroads into
Brazil, Middle East, and African construction equipment markets
based on the success in the Chinese market,” said Choe Byeong-

Temperatures in Astana can drop to -35 deg Celsius in winter
and climb as high as +35 deg in summer. The three-layer ETFE
envelope is designed to shelter the enclosed accommodation from
extreme weather as well as to allow daylight to wash the interiors. In
winter, a key challenge is to prevent the formation of ice on the inside
of the envelope. This is achieved by a combination of temperature
control and directing warm air currents up the inner surface of the
fabric, a strategy that also prevents downdraughts. In summer, fritting
on the outermost foil layer provides solar shading. Inside, low-level
jets direct cool air across the space, while opening vents at the apex
induce stack-effect ventilation.

Terex increases Chinese market presence

Terex is expanding its presence in the Chinese market by collaborating
with two local companies.
Terex has recently signed an agreement to acquire 65 percent
control of Shandong Topower Heavy Machinery Company in Jinan,
China, which currently manufactures lattice boom crawler cranes
in the 70 to 360 t class.
In addition, Terex has entered into an agreement with Fujian South
Highway Machinery Company (NFLG) to establish a mobile materials
processing equipment manufacturing joint venture in Quanzhou,
China. The joint venture, of which Terex will be 60 percent owner, will
manufacture jaw crushers, cone crushers, impact crushers and screens
for aggregates, mining and material recycling applications.
Terex expects to complete the Topower acquisition and the joint
venture with NFLG later this year. n

Wacker starts supplying VAE Copolymer Dispersions from Nanjing

Wacker has started supplying vinyl acetate ethylene (VAE) copolymer
dispersions from its plant in Nanjing, China. The fully integrated site
offers VAE copolymer dispersions and dispersible polymer powders
for the construction, coatings, adhesives and other industries.
Wacker’s Nanjing site is a world-class production complex that
serves the entire product line from vinyl acetate ethylene copolymer
dispersions to dispersible polymer powders. Located in the Nanjing
Chemical Industrial Park, the site produces VINNAPAS VAE
copolymer dispersions with a current capacity of about 50,000 metric
tons per year, depending on the product mix. In addition, the site
offers an annual capacity of 30,000 metric tons of dispersible powder.
It is believed to be the largest plant of its kind in China.
“The local production of VINNAPAS copolymer dispersions
allows us to respond to the local market needs,” said Ginger Merritt,
vice president of Wacker’s polymers business in Greater China.
“And it enables us to guarantee our customers in China reliable
supply and consistent product quality. The Nanjing plant investment

VINNAPAS copolymer dispersions are widely used in the
Chinese adhesives sector. VINNAPAS grades, such as VINNAPAS

OMA reveals plans for new cultural district in Hong Kong

OMA’s conceptual masterplan for a major new arts district in Hong
Kong features a 40 ha waterfront site facing Victoria Harbour, which
has three urban villages embedded in a new public park. Each of
the villages has a strong emphasis on vibrant street life and cultural
production.
One of the key elements of the proposal is M+, an experimental
new museum featuring visual art, film, design and popular culture.
Embedded in M+ is an Art Factory, where education, artist studios,
a hotel and shops intersect and interact with the museum itself.
Beneath M+, the Exhibition Centre is a venue for auctions and
conventions.
The Middle Village is conceived as a continuation of Kowloon’s
street markets with small-scale entertainment, local shops,
restaurants, street markets, artist studios, production spaces, and
galleries. The Middle Village is flanked by a Xiqu Theatre (and a
Xiqu School) for Cantonese performance and, to the east, a premiere
movie theatre celebrating Hong Kong’s film industry.
With views over the water and Victoria Harbour, the focal
point of Theatre Village is the Universal Theatre, a network of four
interconnected performance spaces - chamber music theatre, street
theatre, grand theatre and a concert hall. Each venue is embedded in a
single, continuous outdoor lobby stretching the length of the village.
Located in parkland between the West and Middle Villages, the
Mega Performance Venue is an open-air amphitheatre based on the
ancient Greek and Roman model. It seats 15,000 people for large scale
entertainment ranging from pop concerts to New Year’s celebrations,
with views over Hong Kong Island as its natural backdrop.
All three villages are embedded in a single park, which connects
with Kowloon Park via a planted green bridge to form one of the
largest public green spaces in Hong Kong. n

Metso to supply mining equipment to TISCO
Metso has won a €30 million contract to supply
mining equipment to TISCO’s iron ore processing
plant in Lan county, Shanxi Province, China. The
delivery is scheduled to be completed by the third
quarter of 2011.
The contract includes three semi-autogenous
mills as well as related start-up and commissioning
services. It will be delivered to TISCO’s new iron ore
processing plant, which is expected to be completed
in 2012. The annual processing capacity of the
plant’s three grinding lines will be 22 mil t of raw
ore, one of the largest capacities in China.
TISCO is one of the world’s largest producers
of stainless steel. In 2009, its turnover was about
€10 billion. n
Japan supports Low-Carbon Model Town Project
Japan has donated JPY360 million to promote energy efficiency activities and low-
carbon measures in APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation). The funds will
particularly be used to support a low-emission urban development initiative.
“The Low-Carbon Model Town Project aims to introduce low-carbon technology
at the level of society and not that of individual products. Over the next three years,
APEC will select between 10 to 20 locations and conduct feasibility study projects
to transform these cities into low-carbon cities,” said the Chair of the meeting,
Japan’s Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry, Masayuki Naoshima.
The fund will also complement APEC’s existing capacity building activities on
energy efficiency, the development and implementation of alternative energy sources,
and the promotion of trade and investment in environmental goods and services.
“APEC’s objective is to build prosperous regional economies. Activities
supported by the fund will help APEC members achieve economic growth that is
environmentally sustainable and create new opportunities for ‘green’ industries,”
said APEC Executive Director, Ambassador Muhamad Noor. n

Kobelco Cranes to produce crawler cranes in India

Kobelco Cranes plans to construct a plant
in India that will produce crawler cranes.
This initiative will strengthen Kobelco’s
involvement in the Indian market, which is
anticipated to grow rapidly in the future. The
company is investing 1.2 billion yen (600
million rupees) in the new facility.
Scheduled to begin production in October
2011, the new Indian plant will be Kobelco’s
first overseas production facility. In addition,
among the world’s major mobile crane makers,
Kobelco is believed to be the first foreign
companies to own a facility that specialises
in the manufacture of crawler cranes.
The new crawler crane plant will be
constructed in the Sri City Special Economic
Zone, about 75 km north of Chennai in
southeastern India. It will be located adjacent
to Kobelco Construction Machinery Co Ltd’s
hydraulic excavator plant. The excavator
plant is currently under construction and
will begin production in January 2011. The
close proximity of the plants will enable the
two companies to share distribution and Kobelco’s 250-t-

years, its overseas crane business will

Sany has reached a major milestone with the inauguration of its Industrial
Park in Pune, India. This is a major step that the company has taken

Wates to build Aldar’s flagship school in Abu Dhabi
Wates Construction International, alongside its joint venture partner Al Fara’s
General Contracting, has been awarded a AED150 million contract to build a
new secondary school for Aldar Academies at Al Bateen in Abu Dhabi.
Scheduled for completion in mid 2011, the new school is set to become Aldar’s
flagship school and one of the leading educational establishments in Abu Dhabi.

resilient schools in Bhutan
ADB and Japan are extending a US$3 million grant to
Bhutan to rebuild damaged schools using earthquake-
resilient materials and designs, which could potentially
be replicated around the country.
The grant from the Japan Fund for Poverty
Reduction for the Upgrading Schools and Integrated
Disaster Education Project will be used to reconstruct
four primary schools that were severely damaged in
a devastating earthquake that struck the country in
September 2009. Funds will also be used to train district
engineers in earthquake-resilient building design and
construction quality management, and to teach disaster
risk management skills to community members.
The project is taking a ‘build back better’
approach, which will see the four target schools
restored using earthquake-resilient materials and
design. Where possible, local materials will be sourced
while private contractors doing the construction work
will be encouraged to hire members of the affected
communities, including women. Participating
community members will also be taught earthquake
resilient construction techniques that could potentially
be applied to communal buildings or their own homes.
Disaster risk management skills will be taught to
district government officials, teachers and school
administrators, who will in turn provide community
training aimed at increasing awareness and ensuring
effective responses to calamities.
The project, scheduled to be completed by August
2013, is expected to benefit about 880 students and
teachers at the affected schools and around 9,000
residents of neighbouring communities. n

and CEO of Metso
Matti Kähkönen (left) has been appointed
as the new president and CEO of Metso
Corporation and Metso Group, effective
1 March 2011. He will be replacing
Metso’s current president and CEO
Jorma Eloranta.

of Metso’s Mining and Construction
Technology segment. He has a long
career at Metso, holding various
management positions in the automation
as well as in the mining and construction technology businesses. He
has been a member of the Metso Executive Team since 2001. n
Caterpillar and Wacker Neuson form alliance
Caterpillar and Wacker Neuson have formed a long-term strategic
alliance for the design, manufacture, distribution and support of
Caterpillar mini excavators under 3 t.
Caterpillar currently offers three models in this size range. The
new model range will consist of up to seven machines, starting
with an operating weight of 0.8 t. The mini excavators will be
produced to Caterpillar’s technical and brand specifications, and
will be distributed and supported via Caterpillar’s global dealer
network with the exception of Japan. All Caterpillar models will
be clearly differentiated from comparable Wacker Neuson models
in the same product range. The additional volume in the first year
of full production in 2012 is expected to be more than double the
existing production volume of comparable mini excavators on Wacker
Neuson’s production lines.
By concentrating production of selected products at Wacker
Neuson’s mini excavator production in Linz, Austria, the two
companies will leverage joint economies of scale in the manufacturing
and development process, while supplying their respective,
complementary sales channels with differentiated, competitive
machines.
The partnership will enable both parties to spread the cost of
developing and modifying lower-emission products across higher
volumes. n
Volvo appoints dealer in Turkey
Volvo CE has signed an agreement with Grupo Auto Sueco
Coimbra for the import, distribution and sale of its products
in Turkey.
Grupo Auto Sueco Coimbra is one of Volvo CE’s largest,
most successful and longest standing dealers that has been
responsible for distribution of the company’s products in Spain,
Portugal and territories in North America, as well as distributing
other Volvo Group’s products.
The agreement between both companies will strengthen
Volvo CE’s presence across Turkey and covers the entire Volvo
CE product range. n

Brokk opens new company in Italy
Brokk AB has strengthened its presence in Italy by establishing
a new subsidiary, Brokk Italia srl, based in Milan. The company
had previously worked with a local distributor in Italy.
“Strategically, this is an important investment in the Italian
market. We will now significantly increase our presence in the
market and can now be even better in supporting our Italian
customers on a daily basis. We see significant potential for Brokk
in the Italian market, and setting up our own subsidiary confirms

IMER signs agreement with Waitzinger
Strengthening its market leadership in the concrete machinery
sector, IMER Group has signed a strategic agreement with the
German company Waitzinger Baumaschinen GmbH, one of the
world’s leaders in the production of truck-mounted concrete
pumps.
The new line of concrete pumps complements the existing
product range of the IMER Group Concrete Machinery Division.
With this, the IMER Group’s five-year plan foresees an increase
in production to 300 pumps per year.
“By way of this agreement, the IMER Group Concrete
Machinery Division is launching an innovative and complete
range of truck-mounted concrete pumps made in Italy and
designed in Germany by Waitzinger, using the technical-design
support of the Germany company,” said Paolo Salvadori, chairman
of the IMER Group Concrete Machinery Division.
The IMER Group Concrete Machinery Division offers a
broad range of products, which consists of models with booms
from 32 up to 47 m long and three outrigger systems (XS, XT
and XXT). In particular, the XXT Outriggers System allows high
stability and versatility. It features two telescopic front outriggers
hydraulically slewable and two hydraulically slewable rear

JCB strengthens in Brazil
JCB is continuing its investment in global excavator production
capability with the opening of its new factory in Brazil, where the
first 20 t machine has just rolled off the line. The JS200LC tracked
excavator was recently bought by Jorcal Engenharia E Construções
S/A, based in Sao Paulo.
The investment follows the opening of the company’s new
£40 million tracked and wheeled excavator factory in Uttoxeter,
Staffordshire, the UK. The construction of the new Brazil facility took
just seven months and includes a new training area to enhance the
service back-up provided for excavator customers in the region.
In addition, JCB has doubled its backhoe loader
production capacity in Brazil to help meet
demand for machines in the region. n

Manitowoc appoints senior VP of global marketing
Ingo Schiller (left) has been appointed
as senior vice president of worldwide
marketing at Manitowoc Cranes. He will
be based at Manitowoc’s Shady Grove
offices in the US and report to Eric Etchart,
president of Manitowoc Cranes.
Mr Schiller will manage all aspects
of global marketing for Manitowoc,
including marketing communications and
product management. In particular, he
will handle global product management,
operational marketing, trade shows,
advertising, public relations and website development.
Mr Schiller succeeds Bob Hund, who is now concentrating solely
on his role as executive vice president of Manitowoc Crane Care.
Mr Schiller has over 20 years of experience in the crane industry
working mostly in sales, marketing and product support. He joined
Manitowoc in 2008 as the vice president of mobile cranes and was
recently appointed to senior vice president of sales and marketing
for Manitowoc Cranes Americas. n
MB opens US headquarters
MB, one of the world leaders in the production and sale of crusher
buckets, has opened its new US headquarters. Located in Reno,
Nevada, this new subsidiary will serve the company’s American

Leica opens first Solutions Center
Leica Geosystems’ first Solutions Center has been opened. The
highly modern facility is built to support the construction, surveying
and engineering community throughout Georgia, in the US. It is
the first of nine locations scheduled to open nationwide over the
next few months.
The new Solutions Center offers excellent products and
technical service with manufacturer’s direct resources, full repair
capabilities on any major brand of measuring equipment, a large
pool of rental instruments for short-term projects, stock of full
range of field supplies, local product training and seminars, and
all products at everyday competitive prices.
According to Ken Mooyman, president of Leica Geosystems,
the opening of the Solutions Centers will help strengthen the
company’s current channels to market in specific geographic
areas. Across North America, the Solutions Centers will
combine with the independent Leica Geosystems distributors
and direct sales people to cover most major local markets and
surrounding areas. n

Volvo expands Shippensburg facility
Volvo Construction Equipment has officially inaugurated its
expanded heavy equipment factory in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania,
the US. The US$30 million investment is aimed to expand the
company’s assembly capabilities to meet anticipated demand in
the North American market.
The company broke ground on the 200,000 sq ft expansion of
the facility started just over a year ago. The expansion includes
a materials service centre and an assembly hall, designed to
improve manufacturing flow and increase production space to
incorporate the production of Volvo motor graders.
The design and construction of the new facility is built on the
Volvo core values of quality, safety, and environmental care and
the company is seeking recognition as a LEED (Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design) certified green building.
In Shippensburg, Volvo CE manufactures more than 60
different models of asphalt pavers, soil and asphalt compactors,
milling machines and motor graders. The factory was acquired in
April 2007 as part of the road development division of Ingersoll
Rand. n
