 The importance of quality maintenance

 Focused on the following Standards

 ARP0108 which is the regulation requirements

 SANS 60079-19 which defines the requirements for the repair

facility e.t.c

 Document required during repair

 Challenges of repair facilities.

 “Maintenance is defined as the routine
actions taken to preserve the fully
serviceable condition of the installed
equipment”
 “A repair is necessary maintenance to keep

the property in habitable and working

condition”
 Using good engineering practises.

 Using manufacturers specified parts in the

certification documentation
 Then carrying out the maintenance as
specified in the certification documentation
 Two types of repair facilities
 The original equipment manufacturer
 Certified repair facilities
 Operates under a quality system

 Certified under an approved production

certification Scheme or
 Repaired product are batch tested by an

Accredited ATL.
 Technical specification
 Explosion protection performance and condition of use
 Dismantling and assembling instruction
 Certification limitation (special condition for use)
 Marking
 Recommendation methods of repair for the equipment
 List of spare parts
 Fault details of the repair or overhaul
 List of replaced or reclaimed parts
 Results of all the checks and tests
 Summary of previous
 History of the repaired product
 Certificate of conformity
Name of the Mark Scheme
repairer

IA Number

Date and year of the

recondition
 Applies to Second-hand equipment sold before
IA certificate became compulsory
 Certified repair facility will be issued with a
special IA certificate covering the type of
equipment by ATL
 Repair facility will be issued with a special IA
certificate covering the particular equipment
by ATL.
 The special IA Certificate will have the suffix
“S” instead of “X”
 Identification of the Special Condition of use on the IA
certificate.
 “Some flamepaths dimensions are different than the
relevant values given in Table 1 of SANS 60079-1:2012. For
repair work the Original Equipment Manufacturer must be
consulted for information regarding the flamepath length”
 Most manufacturers will refrain from issuing any kind of
supporting documentation pertaining to the design of
equipment to third parties in order to protect their
Intellectual Property
Flamepath length
Originally
19.5 mm to 20
mm

After repair
12.5 mm

The repaired enclosure complies with the Table 1 Width

of SANS 60079-1.
The equipment no longer meets the approved 17.0 mm
design of the manufacture
 Lack of proper documentation as required by these standards
can in effect cause substandard repairs.
 Amend the ARP 0108 to include that the responsibility OEM to
supply documentation necessary documentation to the repair
facility.
 Installation, operation and repair manual as per SANS 60079-0
being property of ATL
