II. RATIONALE

Today’s ugly heap of used paper, cardboard, writing pads, paper wrappers and
other litters can be tomorrow’s source of fund for our school projects and activities.
Instead of throwing this litter which adds to the unmanageable solid waste piled up daily
in the dump sites, they can make significant contribution to fund raising venture for school.

Yet problems persist in school despite numerous efforts to implement a policy

on solid waste policy. This study described the impact of pupils and teachers’ involvement
in problem identification and action planning to implement a school policy on solid waste
management (SWM). Descriptive design was used utilizing quantitative and qualitative
data. Waste analysis and classification study, workshop, waste assessment and
classification study, interview and, comparative analysis were used to gather and analyze
data. Prior to action plan implementation, it was found that pupils had poor knowledge on
segregation, and most did not segregate waste.

Learning by doing is indeed a good start toward a greater solution for these
problems. Allowing waste generators to participate in the planning and implementation of
SWM may create a great impact for the success of the plan.

The Science Club and YES-O Club Officers together with some of our very
supportive parents will be given orientation on how this SWM System will be done in
school. Each is expected to be motivated and encouraged to be an active member of an
Income Generating Project which will be conducted in connection with this so that all
waste paper materials could be of help in funding our Science and Herbal Garden.
Through this, trash of papers being carelessly thrown everywhere in the classroom and
in the school yard will be eliminated and the school will surely be free from all those paper
of different kinds piled up in some areas of the school.

III. PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The Project targets to build positive attitudes, knowledge and skills in segregation,
continuously educates pupils to build their attitude, develops a culture that gives
importance to cleanliness of the surroundings and a culture that sees segregation as a
normal routine,
It also aims to apply knowledge and skills in simple business and generate funds
for growing of plants, beautification and maintenance of the school Science and Herbal
Garden.

VIII. CONCLUSION

Waste mismanagement has serious environmental effects making the passage

of the Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 a
landmark environmental legislation in the Philippines. The law was crafted in response
to the looming garbage problems in the country. RA 9003 declares the policy of the
state in adopting a systematic, comprehensive and ecological solid waste management
program that ensures the protection of public health and the environment and the
proper segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment and disposal of solid waste
through the formulation and adoption of best environmental practices. Moreover, it
illustrates the potentials and benefits of recycling not only in addressing waste
management problems but also in alleviating poverty.

The current school waste management programs tend to always fail because it
only exists for a few months and then die its natural death. With this income generating
project which seeks to earn financial capabilities, teachers, parents and pupils will
definitely work hand in hand for its sustainability. The proponent is looking forward to a
more organized, mess-free and healthier school environment today and in the future.
