CHAPTER III

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

This chapter deals with the design, respondents, instrumentation and procedure of the study.

It also presents the data gathering and procedures and the statistical tools to analyze and interpret

the data gathering.

Research Design

In this study, the researchers will use case study research design. Basically, a case study is

an in depth study of a particular situation rather than a sweeping statistical survey. It is a method

used to narrow down a very broad field a research into one easily researchable topic. According

to Yin (1984), case study research method as an empirical inquiry that investigates a

contemporary phenomenon within its real-life context; when the boundaries between

phenomenon and context are not clearly evident; and in which multiple sources of evidence are

used.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted at San Pablo Elementary School. It was located at San

Pablo, Cauayan City, Isabela.

Respondents of the Study

Respondents of the study will consist of ____ grade II parents and ____ grade II pupils

of San Pablo Elementary School. The respondents will be selected through purposive sampling.

A purposive sampling is also known as judgement, selective or subjective sampling. It is a non-

probability sample that is selected based on characteristics of a population and the objectives of

the study.

Data Gathering Instrument

The researchers will conduct a focus group discussion using semi-structured interview for

the parents. The researchers will use face-to-face interview using semi-structured interview

questions for the pupils. A purposeful samples of _____ pupils and _____ parents will be invited

to participate in the study. On the other hand, documentary analysis through class record of grade

II pupils will be use by the researchers to determine their academic performance in Math and

Filipino.

The following questions are to be used by the researchers as means to generate the data:

For the parents:

1. Do your child come with homework from school?

2. Who supervises them in doing their homework?

3. What did you do to help your child perform well at school?

4. Do you reward your child when they do well in school?

For the pupils :

1. Does your teacher give you work to take home?

2. Do you like doing homework? Why?

3. Do your parents help you in your homework? How?

4.Do your parents reward you if you perform well at school?

Data Gathering Procedures

The researchers will ask for approval of the principal of San Pablo Elementary School to

allow them gather relevant data needed for the study. After the approval of the principal, the

respondents must be informed.

The researchers will give brief explanation about the purpose, nature and importance of

the research and will make the instructions very clear to the respondents one week before the

final interview. The interview will be scheduled at a time and venue designated by the

respondents. The interview will be utilized as a good way in getting the story behind the

respondents experiences on parental involvement in homework and academic performance.

However, the class record of the grade II pupils will be the basis of knowing their academic

performance. The interview and documentary analysis will be conducted until it satisfies the data

needed by the researchers.

Data Analysis

The researchers will transcribe the data into English. Afterwards, the transcribed data will

be carefully read line-by-line by the researchers. The transcriptions will coded using axial

coding. This involves initial coding, clustering of similar concepts and classifying themes.

On documentary analysis segment of the study, the researchers will use mean and

standard deviation to analyze the data.
