Materials: manila paper, pentel pen, video clip (flash drive), LCD projector

Learning Competencies:
 explain the formation of ionic and covalent bonds; S9MT-IIa-13

 recognize different types of compounds (ionic or covalent) based on their properties such as melting point,
hardness, polarity, and electrical and thermal conductivity; S9MT-IIb-14

Objectives:
1. explain the formation of ionic and covalent compounds
2. recognize the different types of compounds (ionic or covalent )from their properties such as melting point ,hardness
,polarity and electrical and thermal conductivity
3.explain properties of metals in terms of their structure.

Day 1
Introduction
Coming together
The students will act as positive ion (cation) or a negative ion (anion) and they will form bonds with the others since
you don’t want to exist alone. With that ,make a print out of an ion of your choice and they will move around the
classroom to find ions that they can bond with for five minutes. They will make bonding as many as possible but they
should bear in mind that bonding happens only to oppositely charged ions. While finding the ion ,they will ask the
question “Can I bond with you “? If the answer is Yes write down the combination that you have created in the
following table.

Positive ion Negative Ion Chemical Formula ( Combination )

Day 2-3
Activating Prior Knowledge
1. Post a Pre assessment output and have a gallery walk in the room.
2. Post the activity and illicit existing ideas on chemical bonding.
Brainstorming Activity
Have the students give examples of chemical changes in their daily lives and discuss the daily events depict chemical
changes due to various chemical reactions.

Pre-lab Preparation
Have the students identify and demonstrate the proper use of the following materials :
Bunsen burner, medicine dropper/pipet ,microplate ,iron ring, iron stand and conductivity tester

Let the students do the laboratory activity (activity attached)

Day 4-5
1. Prepare cards of elements where only the symbol is written with their perspective colors given below

GREEN RED BLUE YELLOW

Li F Be O
Na Cl Mg S
K Br Ca Se

2. Make a match by picking one card from green and one from the red.
3. Make a second match by picking one card from blue and one from yellow.
4. Use the periodic table of elements to determine the valence electron of each of the elements that you have
picked.
5. Write down the total number of valence electrons of your first match then your second match as well. What
have you found out?
6. How many valence electrons are needed for the elements to make a match?

After the introduction about the topic (chemical bonding) Discuss with the students what they already know about
electron configuration in atoms and the properties of noble gases.
Discuss the following terms
Term How you understand the term
Chemical bond
Ionic bond
ion

Day 6-7
Explain the formation of ionic compound

Think –Pair-Share
Have the students get a piece of bond paper and write/illustrate the formation of ionic compound. Let them choose 1
ionic compound .Then let them get a partner and explain it.

Discuss how to write the formula of binary and ternary compounds

Make an online research on the economic importance of some carbonates
Make a collection of the important ions and their function to the body and their other uses.

Day 8
Let the students check one of the boxes describing how the lesson helped them attain the focus points
intended for the lesson. Based on their responses, you will present a short assessment to check what reinforcement or
extension activities can be used to further enhance their understanding
