ABSTRACT
D r y i n g o f t h i n p a p e r s h e e t o n a Yankee c y l i n d e r
e q u i p p e d w i t h a s t e a m h e a t e d h i g h v e l o c i t y hood i s exam-
ined. When p o s s i b l e i n f i l t r a t i o n of a i r f r o m t h e s u r -
roundings is considered, then t h e process is f u l l y d e t e r -
mined b y t w e l v e v a r i a b l e s . One of t h e s e c a n b e c h o s e n a s
an independent variable. An e q u a t i o n g r o u p o f e l e v e n
e q u a t i o n s is d e r i v e d . The m e t h o d o f s o l u t i o n i s i t e r a -
tive. F i n a l l y , a n u m e r i c a l d e m o n s t r a t i o n example i s pre-
sented.
INTRODUCTION
To d i m e n s i o n a d r y i n g m a c h i n e i s u s u a l l y r a t h e r s i m -
ple. After s e l e c t i n g reasonable values f o r the operation
p a r a m e t e r s , t h e d r y e r volume, h e a t i n g s u r f a c e s e t c . . can
readily be calculated.
The o p p o s i t e t a s k , c a l c u l a t i n g t h e d r y i n g c a p a c i t y
and a l l o p e r a t i o n p a r a m e t e r v a l u e s , of an e x i s t i n g d r y i n g
machine, a t varying o p e r a t i n g c o n d i t i o n s ( a t d i f f e r e n t
d r y i n g steam p r e s s u r e s , a t changing d r y i n g a i r r a t e s e t c . 1
i s a p r o b l e m much more d i f f i c u l t .
R e c e n t l y t h e a u t h o r p u b l i s h e d a m a t h e m a t i c a l model
f o r r e s o l v i n g t h e p r o c e s s p a r a m e t e r s of an a d i a b a t i c d r y e r
(Soininen, 1983). I n t h e p r e s e n t p a p e r , a p r a c t i c a l meth-
od i s d e r i v e d f o r a n o n - a d i a b a t i c dryer, specially for a
Yankee c y l i n d e r w i t h a s t e a m h e a t e d h i g h v e l o c i t y h o o d .
I t i s assumed t h a t t h e r e i s some a i r l e a k a g e f r o m t h e s u r -

r o u n d i n g s i n t o t h e hood. I t i s shown t h a t , e x c l u d i n g t h e
c y l i n d e r a n d hood s t e a m c o n d e n s i n g t e m p e r a t u r e s w h i c h
s h o u l d b e known, t h e e n t i r e p r o c e s s c a n b e d e s c r i b e d
using 1 2 parameters. One o f t h e s e c a n b e c h o s e n a s a n
independent v a r i a b l e . F o r r e s o l v i n g t h e v a l u e s of t h e
r e m a i n i n g 11 v a r i a b l e s , a s y s t e m o f 11 e q u a t i o n s i s
derived. The s o l u t i o n o f t h e r e s u l t i n g e q u a t i o n s y s t e m
is i t e r a t i v e .
SIMPLIFICATIONS MADE
To s i m p l i f y t h e a n a l y s i s , t h e following a s s u m p t i o n s
h a v e b e e n made:
1. The w a t e r v a p o r p a r t i a l p r e s s u r e a s a f u n c t i o n o f
t h e d r y i n g s h e e t s u r f a c e t e m p e r a t u r e i s assumed t o b e
known (Eq. 11). T h i s means t h a t t h e h e a t and mass t r a n s -
f e r i n s i d e t h e drying material, a very important f a c t o r
f o r t h e d r y i n g p r o c e s s , h a s n o t been accounted f o r . How-
e v e r , when n o r m a l w a t e r s a t u r a t i o n v a l u e s a r e u s e d
(Eq. l l ' ) , t h e r e s u l t s a r e v a l i d f o r a v e r y t h i n s h e e t .
2. The d r y a l r mass f l o w r a t e o f t h e c i r c u l a t i o n a i r
f a n i s a s s u m e d t o b e known. A c t u a l l y , t h e volume f l o w
r a t e o f t h e f a n i s known. The v a l u e o f t h e mass f l o w r a t e
c a n , however, b e a d j u s t e d by i t e r a t i o n a s soon a s t h e
s t a t e o f t h e c i r c u l a t i o n a i r becomes known f r o m t h e f i r s t
solution.
3. The s h e e t t e m p e r a t u r e i n c o n t a c t w i t h t h e d r y e s t
d r y i n g a i r t e n d s t o b e l o w e r , and t h o s e o f p o r t i o n s i n
c o n t a c t w i t h t h e most humid a i r t e n d t o b e h i g h e r . r e s p e c -
t i v e l y , than the sheet average temperature. This varia-
t i o n , which i s r a t h e r s m a l l , i s n e g l e c t e d .

A i r leaving the evaporating s u r f a c e ( p o i n t 5 ) is
then diluted by i n f i l t r a t e d a i r . The s t a t e of t h e mix-
t u r e is found a t p o i n t 6 , which l i e s on t h e s t r a i g h t l i n e
t h r o u g h p o i n t s 0 and 5 . From t h e p o i n t 6 t h e m i x t u r e i s
t h e n c o o l e d by hood h e a t l o s s e s QH t o p o i n t 2 , which r e p -
r e s e n t s t h e s t a t e o f t h e e x h a u s t a i r and t h e a i r which
returns t o the circulation.

Eq. 5 i s , h o w e v e r , n o t s t r i c t l y c o r r e c t , b e c a u s e
of t h e f a c t t h a t t h e d r y i n g a i r h e a t c a p a c i t y flow (e3

due t o t h e evaporation. The m a t h e m a t i c a l l y c o r r e c t

derived a theoretically accurate equation for the case
o f an a d i a b a t i c d r y e r ( S o i n i n e n , 1 9 8 4 ) . I t was f o u n d
