Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Background

Social fear is one of the aspects that affect the socialization of a

person to another person. Social behaviour is defined as interactions

among individuals, normally within the same species, that are usually

beneficial to one another. A person cannot live easily without interaction

to another individual; most of the species are interdependent and rely to

one another in order to fulfil the needs of an individual. Obstacles to the

interaction of an individual to another individual will defy the success of

communication. Obstacles in communications usually happen because

of the way an individual behave and will lead to an irrational result.

One of the common group in the society is the students, who

crucially rely in socialization. From day to day basis, students interact to

socialize in order to gain or get something. Students will not get through

the day without relying to their instructors and classmates, especially in

their classroom. Even in their school canteen, they cannot even get their

meal without interacting, verbally or nonverbally, to the canteen clerk. A

bad social behaviour will affect to the interaction of students and it will

have a great effect to the response of the person or people they are

talking to. At some point, there are some factors that affect one’s

behaviour that usually results to a bad effect to their interaction with

other individuals. In this research, the factors that affect the social
behaviour will be discussed to know what are the reasons why there are

students who has a unusual social behaviour.

Background of the Study

Factors that affect the behaviour of a student are inevitable most

of the time. Since then, unusual behaviour is very common back in time.

Some researchers already came up with a result, but it is generalized

due to the fact that they researched it outside the school. Commonly, the

typical problem of a student to a new academic year is coping to their

new environment. But socializing gets easier as day pass. Somehow,

other students still struggle to interact because of their unusual social

behaviour. Back then, if a student does not response accordingly, or act

weird, other students will think something about it. Even now, students

still show some sign of unusual social behaviour, but around their

friends, they act free and normal. But in some cases, other student show

their unusual social behaviour when reciting to their teachers, acting in

front, and doing a presentation.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the factors that affect the social

behaviour of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences students of

Bestlink College of the Philippines.

Specifically, this study also sought to answer the following

questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of their;

1.1 Gender;

1.2 Age; and

1.3 Section?

2. What are the factors that affect the social behaviour of a student in
terms of their;
2.1 Personality;
2.2 Self-esteem
2.3 Physical Appearance; and
2.4 Environment

3. How does the social behaviour of a student affects their academic

performance in terms of their;
3.1 Class Performance;
3.2 Task Performance; and
3.3 Attendance?

4. What are the possible solutions/recommendations that can be

proposed for the improvement of the social behaviour to the students of
Bestlink College of the Philippines?
Significance of the Study
This study will be beneficial to the following group of persons:

Students. Results of the study will provide them a sufficient reason

why do they experience unusual social behaviour.

Teachers. This study will be beneficial to the teachers to lessen the

implications of why some students have a unusual behaviour.

Parents. Results of the study will give information why the academic
performance of their child is affect by their social behaviour.

Future Researcher will be aware why there are some factors that
affect the student success to communication.
Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study is only limited to the Factors that affect the social
behaviour of grade 12 HUMSS students of the Bestlink College of the
Philippines, along the aspects are personality, self-esteem, physical
appearance and environment.

The respondents of this study will be thirty(30) grade 12 HUMSS

students in Bestlink College of the Philippines during the school year
2019-2020.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter includes a review of related local and foreign

literature and studies relevant to the present study. It guides the
researcher in the formulation of the conceptual framework and in the
preparation of the research design, methodology, sampling
techniques, and instrumentation. Related literature and studies may
support and substantiate the findings of the present studies.

2.1 Local Literature

Counselling as an art is the subjective dimension of counselling,
while as a science, on the other hand, is the objective dimension of
the counselling process (Sampa, 2017). In common terms,
counselling happens when a person who is stressed asks for help
and permits another person to enter into a kind of connection with
him/her. Counselling affects one’s social behaviour either in a good
way or a bad way. Advices that is given by the counsellor may be
followed or not by the client. Counselling includes talking about why a
person is stressed and why he/she seeks for help. Even if the client
did not followed the advice of the counsellor, his/her social behaviour
can still be affected because of the conversation between the client
and the counsellor. Based on Guidance and Counselling Act of 2004,
guidance and counselling is the profession that implicates the
application of “an integrated approach to the development of a well-
functioning individual” through the provision of support that aids an
individual to use his/her potential to the fullest in accord with his/her
interest, needs and abilities. The licensed counsellor can make their
client to be interested or even triggered to something that they are
talking about. Informal helping or counselling that executed by the
friends of a student can also affect its social behaviour. Most of the
student at this time relies on what others say.

2.2 Foreign Literature

2.3 Local Studies

Philippines, as an archipelagic country located in Southeast Asia

and situated along the “Typhoon Belt” in the Pacific and the “Pacific
Ring of Fire” , Philippines is vulnerable to natural disasters.
Conditions such as these can contribute to essentially two sets of
problems recurring in South East Asia Asian countries, confronted by
those in rural and urban areas: The inability of the agricultural sector
to provide sufficiently for the livelihood of the rural dwellers; while the
same time, vulnerability and displacement due to natural disasters in
rural areas and the increasing rate of land conversion from
agricultural to industrial leading to a rapid increase in rural-urban
migration (Reyes, 2014). This condition causes environmental stress
which affects the daily living of the people who lives in an urbanized
area. Specifically, workers and students are affected by the effect of
rapid increase in rural-urban migration. Particularly, students needed
to have a stress free environment to be focus in academics.
Tremendous stress on the environment such as extreme congestion,
air, water, and land pollution will cause them to be distracted by these
factors specifically to students who live in an overpopulated area.
Thus, Filipinos display a range of traditional and cultural coping
mechanisms whenever they encounters different types of stress, and
often conveyed in the expression “bahala na”. The translation of the
mentioned expression indicates a form of reasoning where behaviour
is determined in the terms of the discourse of science and it also
provides formidable armour against the suffering brought by
environmental stress.
In the socioemotional perspective of a Filipino learner as studied
by Rungduin, T.T. & Reyes, Z.Q. states that parenting is one of the
factors that affect the social development of a student. The children’s
social development was linked to Erik Erikson’s psychological stages
concentrating on the indicators per stage and the virtues
accompanying each stage (Rungduin & Reyes, 2016). Most of the
children who are encouraged and commended by parents and
teachers develop a feeling of competence and believe in their skills,
specifically, communicating skills. Whereas, those who were not, feel
inferior compared to what their peers can accomplish. However, there
are attributes which are also very distinct as Filipinos since they were
nurtured in the social environment dominated by Filipino culture.

2.4 Foreign Studies

Social behaviours have been widely studied in behavioural

economics and psychology. However, the origins of this behaviour in
the brain are poorly understood. Inequity, one of the factors that affect
social behaviour, is a concept that is encountered in daily life. It is the
difference between one’s own reward and that of another. There have
been several studies that have suggested that inequity affects brain
activity (Coeverden, 2015). Inequity has been considered a
contributing factor that affects brain activity which also affects social
behaviour. When inequity affects social behaviour, the person who is
affected will have problems in cooperation behaviour. Coordination
and cooperation are important and frequently observed. People in the
society interact to cooperate, which is fundamental to building a
society. When a person is affected by inequity, it might also affect the
person’s behaviour. It is also hypothesised that inequity aversion
coding in the brain evolved together with cooperation in social
species, especially humans. Some of the studies stated that inequity,
positive or negative, can make a person to be selfish or cooperative
to others. In inequity aversion, it could have created a selective
pressure for cooperative individuals because it increases payoffs in
cooperative exchanges. An increase in cooperative exchanges could
be linked to an increase in reproductive success, especially in
humans.
Attitude does not directly predict behaviours. There has been lots
of debate on the link between attitude and behaviour in the arena of
consumer behaviours (Savitha and Kannadas, 2014). In problem
solving, it is frequently needed to forecast or predict people’s
behaviour. Attitude could explain human actions, in the current
scenarios, changes happen in every aspect of life. There are two
types of changes that happen, the positive change and the negative
change. However, it is one of the factors that affect one’s social
behaviour. Changes in one’s self will not totally affect one’s
environment. But for students, since they interact to each other to
fulfil the needs of one another, change will affect the way they
cooperate to their colleagues, even it is positive or negative.
