The speaker of this saying perhaps wants to take advantage of free service. He does
not care much for others but for himself/herself. He seems selfish in the sense that he does
not appreciate public services. He probably thinks that public means something that
belongs to everyone and public things can be taken for granted without showing any
positive attitudes towards those who serve him.

Mr. Jones had been ill and went on holiday to build up his health. When he came
home, he found that thieves had broken into his house. They'd messed up the bedroom

They'd blown up the safe in the study and stolen all the money he'd saved by giving up
smoking. He rang up the police, who came immediately. "Did you lock up the house
when you went away?" asked the detective. "Definitely," replied Mr. Jones. The detective
went out into the garden. "Ah," he shouted. "They climbed up a tree and got in through
the bathroom window. You must have left it open." He found a cigarette end and wrapped
it up in a piece of paper. "Next time you go away," he said, "be sure you close the house
up properly."

Lesson 45 : A VISIT TO A DOCTOR

Talking point :
1. Describe the symptoms of any common illness and say the treatment doctors
usually prescribe.
When you have a cold, you probably sneeze a lot and have temperature. You may
feel tired and sleepy. Your doctor perhaps advises you to go to bed early and drink a lot of
juice. He may prescribe you some cold medicine. You need good rest when having a cold.
2. "All medicines and medical treatment should be free." Discuss.
Medicines and medical treatment usually cost much ; however, patients sometimes do
not have enough money to pay. What should they do in this case? Free medicines perhaps,
save more lives of the poor people as they need help from us. It is the dream of everyone
to gel free medical treatment but where can we get money to pay doctors, nurses and
technicians? How can we have money to produce medicines? So, in my opinions, the poor
can get free medicines and medial treatment but others have to pay.

The first proverb advises us to be careful when doing things. We should take into
everything before making a decision. The second proverb, on the contrary, encourages us
to have great sense of adventure as unless we are willing to do something, we can obtain
it. Usually, when venturing, one is not very careful.

General questions :
1. Do you think that it's important to be punctual? Why/Why not?
Being punctual shows your disciplined characteristics and it helps keep activities as
scheduled. You may be evaluated by your employers in terms of being punctual or not
and you show a good example to your employees when you are you are late for a meeting,
you may lose some important points or you may keep other people waiting. Time is
money and should not be wasted. Being punctual is a good sign of a person in a modern
time.
