FRAME

Data Communication 45 minutes Aldrin M. Bagasina

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

1. Define data, data communication, and information.

2. Identify the Basic Elements of a communication system and data transmission
modes.
3. Construct information base from the gathered data.
4. Show teamwork and cooperation through participating in a group activity.

Procedure
A. Learning Activities

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY

“Good Morning Class. Welcome to our ICT class” “Good Morning Sir!”

(Checking of Attendance) (Students will tell who’s absent for the

day)

“So how’s your day? Is it good so far?” “It was great Sir!”

“That’s good to know. So, are you ready to discuss our new topic “Yes Sir!”

today?’

“Okay that’s good, so let’s begin this with a group activity!

Motivation
Group Activity:

The students will be divided in to four; each group will be given pieces of paper. They
will be asked to create a short story based on the given pictures on the board
TEACHER STUDENTS

Presentation (Students will tell their stories)

“Very nice! I am very pleased that all of you did a great job. Now let’s

discuss your stories. What do these stories have in common?” (Students answer) “They all have

communication.”

Discussion

“Very good observation! Now, from your given stories. What is (Students answer) “Sir,

communication?” communication

is the process of exchanging data

or information.”

“Very good answer. Now, let me introduce our lesson for today and it is

Data communication”

“Data communication is the process of exchanging data and

communication, but there is a twist. Unlike the plain communication, data

communication requires electronic transmission.

“Now can anyone state an example of any electronic device used in (The student will give an example.)

communication.

“Very good students. Now, Let’s tackle about the basic elements of a

communication system
TEACHER STUDENTS

“We have five basic elements in a communication system and these are:

 Sender

 Receiver

 Message

 Medium

 Protocol

Application

Now, I want two volunteers for our next activity. The first student will be
(Two students volunteer)
the sender while the other one will be the receiver.

“Now, listen to my protocol. I want you to ask him/her on a date without

using your voice or any kind of gestures. (The student writes on a paper )

“Very good! That was a great move. Now, from the given activity. Can

anyone define what is a sender, receiver, message, medium, and protocol. (Students volunteer to give their

answers)

“Very good students. Now, we will move on to our next topic which is the

data transmission”
TEACHER STUDENTS

“Data transmission is the way of transmitting data from one point to

another. It is consist of three modes and these are:

 Simplex

 Half-duplex

 Full-duplex

“In simplex mode the communication can take place in one direction. The

receiver receives the signal from the transmitting device. In this mode the

flow of information is Uni-directional. Hence it is rarely used for data

communication.”

“Now, can anyone state an example of simplex mode?" (Students volunteer to give their

answers)

“Very good students!”

“In half-duplex mode the communication channel is used in both directions,

but only in one direction at a time. It can also alternately send and receive

data.”

“Now, can anyone state an example of half-duplex mode?" (Students volunteer to give their

answers)

“Very good students!”

TEACHER STUDENTS

“In full-duplex the communication channel is used in both directions at the

same time.”

“Now, can anyone state an example of full-duplex mode?" (Students volunteer to give their

answers)

“Very good! It’s easy to understand right?”

“Now, we will have our last activity before we move on to our last topic.”

Group Activity:

The students will be divided in to four; each group will get any new
or used materials from their bag. They will make an output that is
something useful from it and present it to the class.

Presentation

(Students will present their outputs)

“Very Good! So our last topic for today is data and information.”

“Data is the gathered raw materials. It can be an alphabet, number, color,

and etc.”

“Information is the processed data. It can be a word, quantity of a thing,

color of a thing, and etc.”

TEACHER STUDENTS

Analysis

“Now, from our last activity. Can anyone tell me which is data?” “Data are the materials that we used

in our activity”

“How about information?” “Information is the output that we

have produce on our activity”

“Well done class”

Generalization

“Now, class, let’s remember that data communication is the process of

exchanging data or information with the use of electronic devices.

Communication system has five basic elements. Can you tell me again the

five basic elements?” “Sender, receiver, message,

medium, and protocol”

“How about the three data transmission modes?” “Simplex, half-dupex, and full-

duplex”

“How about the difference between data and information” “Data are the gathered raw

materials, while information is

processed and interpreted data”

TEACHER STUDENTS

Evaluation

Directions: Select the correct answer. Write the letter only.

1. It is the process of exchanging data or information with the use of electronic

devices.

a. Communication b. Data communication c. Transmission

2. It is the device that sends the data massage.

a. Message b. Sender c. Receiver

3. It is the information to be communicated.

a. Message b. Sender c. Receiver

4. In this mode of data transmission, the communication can take place in one
direction. The flow of information is uni-directional.

a. Simplex b. half-duplex c. full-duplex

5. It is the processed and interpreted data.

a. Data b. Information c. Message

Assignment
