Realizamos una visita de cortesía al embajador Mzolisa Bona, nuevo Director de Latinoamérica y el Caribe de la
cancillería sudafricana. Fue un diálogo muy abierto y fructífero, en el que se abordaron temas bilaterales, como los
inicios de las conversaciones para la próxima visita de nuestro Vice Canciller a Sudáfrica y los proyectos de nuestra
Embajada con diversas instituciones del país; así como temas de carácter regional y hemisférico.

We made a courtesy visit to Ambassador Mzolisa Bona, new Director of Latin America and the Caribbean of the South
African Foreign Ministry. It was a very open and fruitful dialogue, in which bilateral issues were addressed, such as the
beginning of the talks for the next visit of our Vice Chancellor to South Africa and the projects of our Embassy with
various institutions in the country; as well as regional and hemispheric issues.

REUNIÓN CON COMUNIDAD PERUANA MEETING WITH PERUVIAN COMMUNITY

EN MOZAMBIQUE IN MOZAMBIQUE

En el marco de la visita a Mozambique para su presentación de Cartas Credenciales, el
Embajador Jorge Félix Rubio se reunió con miembros de la activa comunidad peruana en
Maputo, compuesta principalmente por emprendedores y funcionarios de diversas
organizaciones internacionales y nacionales. La embajada se comprometió a continuar
apoyando a los peruanos asentados en Mozambique y ofreció realizar actividades de
carácter cultural que contarán con el impulso y apoyo de nuestra comunidad.
In the framework of the visit to Mozambique for his presentation of Credentials, Ambassador
Jorge Félix Rubio met with members of the active Peruvian community in Maputo,
composed mainly of entrepreneurs and officials of various international and national
organizations. The embassy pledged to continue supporting Peruvians settled in
Mozambique and offered to carry out cultural activities that will have the support and boost
of our community.

Visita al Instituto de Estudios Visit to the Institute for

de Seguridad (ISS) Security Studies (ISS)
En agosto nos reunimos con Tonette Grütter Directora de
Operaciones del ISS, importante think tank cuyo trabajo se centra
en África, pero también busca usar sus redes para brindar
análisis, capacitación práctica y asistencia técnica a los
gobiernos y la sociedad civil. La señora Grütter se mostró muy
receptiva respecto a la posibilidad de iniciar contactos con
organizaciones afines en el Perú. Conversamos sobre el estado de
las relaciones bilaterales y multilaterales entre el Perú y Sudáfrica
y otros asuntos internacionales y se acordó que establecería el
contacto entre ISS y organizaciones afines en el Perú.
In August we met with Tonette Grütter Director of Operations of
the ISS, an important think tank whose work focuses on Africa, but
also seeks to use its networks to provide analysis, practical
training and technical assistance to governments and civil
society. Mrs. Grütter was very receptive to the possibility of
starting contacts with related organizations in Peru. We talked
about the state of bilateral and multilateral relations between Peru
and South Africa and other international issues and it was agreed
that it would establish contact between ISS and related
organizations in Peru.

ACTIVIDADES DE LA EMBAJADA
Visita al Instituto Sudafricano de
Asuntos Internacionales (SAIIA)
Visitamos a la Directora Ejecutiva del SAIIA, señora Elizabeth Sidiropoulos, y a la
Directora de Operaciones, señora Karen Jordaan. Se conversó sobre la proyección
internacional del Perú y el deseo de ampliar la presencia peruana en el continente y
los contactos que esta embajada ha venido estableciendo con el fin de acercar a las
instituciones de la sociedad civil y el mundo académico.
También se expuso el estado de las relaciones bilaterales y multilaterales
entre el Perú y Sudáfrica y las inversiones sudafricanas en el Perú. La señora
Sidiropoulos mencionó que el SAIIA busca ampliar el interés y diversificar la
presencia de Sudáfrica en otras regiones. Asimismo, mencionó la importancia de la
cooperación sur-sur y el interés de establecer vínculos con instituciones similares en
el Perú. Por su parte, esta Embajada será miembro diplomático del SAIIA y participará
en eventos de intercambio de información con tan importante institución.

Visit to the South African Institute
of International Affairs (SAIIA)
We visited the Executive Director of SAIIA, Mrs. Elizabeth Sidiropoulos, and the
Director of Operations, Mrs. Karen Jordaan. The international projection of Peru and
the desire to expand the Peruvian presence in the continent and the contacts that this
embassy has been establishing in order to bring civil society institutions and
academia closer together were discussed. The status of bilateral and multilateral
relations between Peru and South Africa and South African investments in Peru was
also discussed. Mrs. Sidiropoulos mentioned that SAIIA seeks to broaden interest and
diversify the presence of South Africa in other regions. She also mentioned the
importance of south-south cooperation and the interest of establishing links with
similar institutions in Peru. For its part, this Embassy will be a diplomatic member of
SAIIA and will participate in information exchange events with such an important
institution.

Nos reunimos con los señores Graeme Ramsay y Mike Hermanson, altos funcionarios
de la empresa “South African Precious Metals”, a fin de dialogar sobre las
perspectivas del relacionamiento entre Perú y Sudáfrica en el área de la minería.
En la señalada conversación, los empresarios sudafricanos resaltaron la importancia
de celebrar un acuerdo interinstitucional entre los Ministerios de Energía y Minas del
Perú y el Ministerio de Recursos Naturales de Sudáfrica. La empresa South Africa
Precious Metals busca invertir en el mercado peruano, ofreciendo los servicios de
refinación de oro y plata a los mineros artesanales, con una tecnología que protege
el medio ambiente.

African Precious Metals
We met with Mr. Graeme Ramsey and Mike Hermanson, high officials of the company
"South African Precious Metals", in order to discuss the perspectives of the
relationship between Peru and South Africa in the area of mining.
In the aforementioned conversation, South African businessmen stressed the
importance of entering into an inter-institutional agreement between the Ministries of
Energy and Mines of Peru and the Ministry of Natural Resources of South Africa. The
company South Africa Precious Metals seeks to invest in the Peruvian market, offering
gold and silver refining services to artisanal miners, with a technology that protects
the environment.

GOLD FIELDS EN EL PERU – UNA
HISTORIA DE ÉXITO
Y COOPERACIÓN
Gold Fields ha estado operando en Perú desde enero de 2006 cuando completamos
la adquisición del proyecto Cerro Corona en los Andes del norte de la provincia de
Cajamarca. La construcción de la mina comenzó más tarde ese año y la primera
producción de oro y cobre comenzó en 2008. Nuestra historia en Perú ha sido de
éxito comercial y sostenible.
En el frente comercial, Cerro Corona ha sido una de las minas más rentables en la
cartera de Gold Fields. En los últimos años, ha producido en promedio alrededor
de 150,000 onzas de oro y 30,000 toneladas de cobre a costos que son los más bajos
del grupo. Como resultado, la mina ha logrado entradas de efectivo de más
de US $ 230 millones solo en 2017 y 2018.
Gold Fields ahora está finalizando planes para extender la vida de Cerro Corona en
seis años hasta 2030 y está llevando a cabo un estudio de alcance que podría
extenderlo aún más hasta 2040. También hemos adquirido una participación
minoritaria indirecta en un proyecto de exploración en el centro de Perú.
Nuestras inversiones en el país son testimonio del sólido entorno regulatorio en Perú,
pero también son un reconocimiento del indudable talento minero en el país. Los
equipos de Gold Fields en la mina y en su oficina central regional en Lima son
casi exclusivamente peruanos.
Gold Fields está utilizando su oficina de Lima como base para la región americana y
ha supervisado la finalización exitosa del estudio de factibilidad para el proyecto
Salares Norte en el norte de Chile. Si el regulador chileno aprueba un estudio de
impacto ambiental, muy probablemente en 2020, Salares Norte podría
ser la segunda mina de Gold Fields en América del Sur.
Hay otra razón para nuestro éxito en Perú. Hemos invertido mucho en la comunidad
Hualgayoc, que es la comunidad anfitriona de Cerro Corona, con poco más de 5,000
habitantes. Si bien muchos proyectos mineros encuentran una fuerte oposición de las
comunidades en la provincia de Cajamarca, Cerro Corona no ha experimentado una
interrupción importante de las protestas comunitarias.
La clave para esto es un fuerte compromiso con el gobierno local, las organizaciones
comunitarias y los propios miembros de la comunidad, así como la inversión en estas
comunidades. Varios pilares sustentan este enfoque:
- La mina y los contratistas emplean tantos miembros de la comunidad como sea
posible. A fines de 2018, 633 miembros de nuestra comunidad anfitriona trabajaron
en la mina, más de una cuarta parte de la fuerza laboral total
- Simultáneamente buscamos comprar la mayor cantidad de bienes y servicios de
compañías en estas comunidades. En 2018, US $ 24 millones, el 16% de nuestro gasto
total en adquisiciones, se obtuvieron de 233 proveedores de la comunidad de
acogida
- En los últimos años, hemos gastado un promedio de US $ 7 millones al año en
proyectos y programas en Hualgayoc. Las inversiones varían, pero se ha centrado la
atención en mejorar la infraestructura del agua (la mayoría de los miembros de la
comunidad ahora tienen acceso a agua limpia y corriente) y proporcionar medios de

GOLD FIELDS IN
PERU – A HISTORY OF SUCCESS
AND CO-OPERATION
Gold Fields has been operating in Peru since January 2006 when we completed the
acquisition of Cerro Corona project in the northern Andes of the country’s Cajamarca
province. Construction of the mine started later that year and first gold and copper
production commenced in 2008. Our history in Peru has been one of commercial and
sustainable success.
On the commercial front, Cerro Corona has consistently been one of the most
profitable mines in the Gold Fields portfolio. Over the past few years, it has produced
on average around 150,000 ounces of gold and 30,000 tons of copper at costs that are
the lowest in the group. As a result, the mine has achieved cash inflows of over
US$230m in 2017 and 2018 alone.
Gold Fields is now finalising plans to extend the life of Cerro Corona by six years to
2030 and is undertaking a scoping study that could extend it even further to 2040. We
have also acquired a minority indirect interest in an exploration project in central Peru.
Our investments in the country are testament to the sound regulatory environment in
Peru, but also recognition of the undoubted mining talent in the country. Gold Fields’
teams at the mine and at its regional head office in Lima are almost exclusively
Peruvian.
Gold Fields is using its Lima office as the base for its American region and it has
overseen the successful completion of the feasibility study for the Salares Norte
project in northern Chile. If the Chilean regulator approves an environmental impact
study, most likely in 2020, Salares Norte could well be Gold Fields’ second mine in
South America.
There is another reason for our success in Peru. We have invested heavily in the
Hualgayoc community, which is Cerro Corona’s host community, with just over 5,000
inhabitants. While many mining projects encounter strong opposition from
communities in Cajamarca province, Cerro Corona has yet to experience a major
disruption from community protests.
Key to this is strong engagement with local government, community organisations and
community members themselves, as well as investment in these communities. A
number of pillars underpin this approach:
- The mine and the contractors employ as many community members as feasible. By
end-2018, 633 members of our host community worked at the mine, well over a quarter
of the total workforce
- Simultaneously we seek to buy as many goods and services from companies in these
communities. In 2018, US$24m - 16% of our total procurement spend – was sourced
from 233 host community suppliers
- Over the past few years, we have spent on average US$7m a year on projects and
programmes in Hualgayoc. The investments vary, but a strong focus has been on
improving water infrastructure – the majority of community members now have access
to clean, running water – and providing agricultural livelihoods.
Gold Fields has enjoyed 13 years of success operating in Peru. With the support of
government and communities, it looks likely to be many more years to come..

Como verdadero limeño, amo mi ciudad y su forma de vida (caótica),
pero siempre supe que terminaría viviendo en el extranjero dado que la
aventura me llamaba. Durante casi cinco años, entre vivir en el Reino
Unido y Estados Unidos, mi esposa, Nicole, anhelaba regresar a
Sudáfrica. Dudaba sobre esta idea y quería regresar a Europa, pero
acepté el desafío y llegué a este país en septiembre de 2008. Aunque
llegué en un momento en que Sudáfrica atravesaba desafíos sociales y
políticos, además del choque cultural, siempre me sentí bienvenido por
la calidez de su gente y la impresionante belleza de esta tierra.
En marzo de 2009, comencé a trabajar para la Embajada del Perú en
Pretoria, que era una oficina relativamente pequeña con solo dos
diplomáticos y tres empleados locales, siendo solo uno de ellos de Perú
(yo). Aunque éramos una pequeña Misión, enfrentamos el desafío en
ayudar a los ciudadanos peruanos en todo el África subsahariana,
especialmente a los peruanos que viven en Mozambique y Zambia. En los
últimos 10 años, he conocido, trabajado y aprendido de una variedad de
individuos únicos de diferentes culturas y nacionalidades.
También valoro a Sudáfrica porque este es el país en el que decidimos
formar una familia y en 2017 dimos la bienvenida a nuestro hijo, Ayden.
En la actualidad, Sudáfrica enfrenta nuevamente los mismos desafíos
cuando llegué por primera vez en el 2008, pero todavía amo a este país y
lo considero "mi hogar lejos del hogar".
As a true limenean I love my city and its (chaotic) way of life but I always
knew I will end up living abroad as adventure was calling. For almost five
years, between living in the United Kingdom and America, my wife,
Nicole, yearned to return to South Africa. I was hesitating about the idea
and wanted to return to Europe but accepted the challenge and arrived
to this country on September 2008. Even though I arrived at the time
when South Africa was going through social and political challenges,
plus the culture shock, I always felt welcomed because of the warmth of
its people and the breath-taking beauty of this land.
On March 2009, I started working for the Embassy of Peru in Pretoria,
which was a relative small office with only two diplomats and three local
engage staff being only one of them from Peru (me). Even though we
were a small Mission we met the challenge in assisting Peruvian
nationals throughout Sub Sahara Africa, especially Peruvians living in
Mozambique and Zambia. This last 10 years I have met, work with and
learned from a range of unique individuals from different cultures and
nationalities.
I also treasure South Africa because this is the country we decided to
start a family and in 2017 we welcomed our son, Ayden.
At present, South Africa is facing again the same challenges when I first
arrived in 2008, but I still love this country and consider it “my home
away from home”.
