Ayurvedic Medicine Beetel Leaf Vine Cultivation using IoT &

Wireless Sensor Network

Abstract

The number of devices connected to the Internet is experiencing an explosive

growth. This development leads to a world with endless possibilities offered by
M2M (Machine-to-Machine) communication, including the deployment of a
smarter and greener planet through the use of information acquired around us. The
interconnection of smart objects embedded with sensors enables this interaction
with the environment according to the concept of Internet of Things (IoT). These
sensors communicate wirelessly forming a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN),
which performs acquisition, collection and analysis of data such as temperature
and soil moisture. The almost infinite capabilities of storage and processing, the
rapid elasticity and pay-per-use characteristics makes Cloud Computing an
attractive solution to the
large amount of data generated by the WSN.

Introduction

The wireless networking finds application in many fields and has enabled almost
instant data transmission without laying long cables and related hardware.

Such an example in Wireless sensor networking (WSN) which can be implemented

in Medical and agriculture fields. The range of WSN is around 2-3 Kms so it is
realizable in buildings and agriculture fields.

This project is aimed at implementing small sensors to form a WSN system to aid
in ayurvedic farming where it is very essential to grow herbs at proper soil
conditions like temperature, humidity etc.,. Different medicinal plants like beetel
leaf, tulsi, mint, turmeric need different climatic conditions. So this project can be
used to study the required conditions for growing different ayurvedic herbs.

To grow Beetel conditions required are :

 Bright, indirect light
 Temperature - 75 to 80o F during the day and 5 to 10 degrees cooler at night.
 Moist soil at all times.

Description

Many embedded systems have substantially different designs according

to their functions and utilities. The microcontroller located at the centre
of the block diagram forms the control unit of the entire project.
Embedded within the microcontroller is a program that helps the
microcontroller to take action based on the inputs provided by the output
of the sensors. This project consists of Renesas microcontroller,
Accelerometer, LCD, soil moisture sensor, temperature sensor, GPRS,
relay, water pump and Amazon server.

Here in this project Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and Internet of

Things (IOT) is employed. WSN consists of accelerometer, soil moisture
sensor and temperature sensor, while the entire unit along with Amazon
server, fulfills the concept of IOT.

Accelerometer’s are mounted near the beetel leaf. Any changes in

position of the vines, produces and output voltage against gravity. The
output of these accelerometer’s are given to the ADC unit of the
microcontroller. Based on the program embedded within the
microcontroller the voltages generated by the accelerometer are
displayed on the LCD.

Soil moisture sensors are placed in the soil at different places within the
vineyard. Output of these sensors, are given to the ADC unit of the
microcontroller. Based on the program embedded within the
microcontroller the voltages generated by the soil sensors are displayed
on the LCD.

Temperature sensors are placed in at different places within the

vineyard. Output of these sensors, are given to the ADC unit of the
microcontroller. Based on the program embedded within the
microcontroller the voltages generated by the temperature are displayed
on the LCD.

All the sensors connected to the microcontroller along with GPRS,

forms one entire node. Output of such nodes, placed at different places,
within the vineyard, is sent to the Amazon server.

For demo purpose LCD is used to display the changes in output voltages
of accelerometer and any event occurring.

Problem Definition (Existing System)

In the current scenario there is no existing system that employs IOT and WSN for
farming. Farmers are indeed hard-workers whose bread and butter depend on the
quality of the agricultural growth of crops. By employing IOT and WSN concept in
agricultural the work as well as health life of a farmer can change to a better
condition.

Demo Points

 A prototype module will be developed for the project. It includes individual

PCB boards for all interfaces according to the block diagram. Every PCB
will be inter-connected with jumper wires.

 Here timing interval in order to send data to the amazon server is

maintained every 2 minutes instead of 1 hour, for demo concern.
 In this project student has to maintain a small balance in ATM, since
Amazon server is utilized in this project.

Literature
The progress of the precision agriculture passes by collecting and interpreting huge
amounts of data from the field so as to understand the causes of variability and
propose strategies for field management. The most important agricultural process
which can be controlled and adapted to better suit the plants growth is related to
irrigation. First and foremost there is the need to identify the tools used to acquire
the generated data in order to be analyzed and compared. The amount of data is
enormous. If this data is not organized and processed, it will become meaningless.

Components Used
 RL78 Renesas Microcontroller
 Temperature Sensor
 Soil Moisture Sensor
 Accelerometer Sensor
 Relay
 LCD
 GPRS Module
 Water Pump Motor

Softwares Used

 Renesas Flash Programmer Tool

 Cubesuite+ Tool
 Amazon Web Services (AWS) – Dotnet Programming

Advantages
 A simple economical module has been designed here - useful for
agriculturists.
 Easy to develop and maintain.
 Can use server data for soil analysis.

Disadvantages
 Absence of power supply to the unit may not update the server on timely
basis.
 If sensors like accelerometer are exposed to water, the component and circuit
will be damaged.

Future Scope:
In an era, where highly advanced medicine has many side-effects on the human
body organs, people are turning towards Ayurveda medicinal treatment. However
due to growing infrastructure development and unpredictable weather conditions,
critical Ayurvedic herbs are severely affected. With the help of WSN and IOT
project in place, farmers, cultivating sensitive herbs, such as the beetel leaf, for
Ayurvedic medicines, can do so with timely monitoring of any changes in
environmental conditions and other necessary factors, remotely.
