"Guide them through the reading of adopted techmical texts for them to acquire the theoretical framework of English phonetics and phonology and use its basic terminology. "Enable them to apply theoretical knowledge to their oral performance. "Help them develop accuracy as well as fluency. ® Aid them in developing self-correcting and self-monitoring skills. = Further develop their listening, speaking and other language components in an integrated woy. = Expose them to different oral text-types and the main varieties of English in order to develop the receptive skills. = Contribute to building up learners’ self-confidence. Specific Objectives C1 Production level This course seeks to encourage students to: = Produce spoken English in tone units, rather than individual words (fluency). * Stress words adequately in tone units, using stress-timed rhythm and strong and weak forms correctly in connected speech. Produce word-linking features correctly ond use the commonest forms of assimilation and clision of spoken English. = Increase students’ automaticity in reading and writing phonetic symbols. 1 Perception level This course seeks to sensitise students to: = Recognise the tone unit os the basic unit of communication through the spoken language. = Conceive prominence as the means to signal sense selection and contrast through the spoken language. "Become familiar with the rhythmical pattem and intonation of spoken English. "Recognise the syllable as a unit of speech, and the existence of strong and weak syllables in English, = Perceive the main phonemic contrasts of Standard British English: vowels and consonants. ** Distinguish the main allophonic realisations in Standard British English. ™ Become acquainted with the similorities and differences between Spanish and Standard British English in terms of: prominence and the tone unit; rhythm; syllable structure, and the sounds systems (phonemic and allophonic) = Identify word-tinking features and other phonological processes within words and at word ‘boundaries in spoken English. "Differentiate between the sounds students hear and the letters they see when looking at words. Mid-term exams Written exams Students will have two mid-term written exams and their corresponding make-vps. The first written exam will take place in June and the second one in November. They will be tested on theoretical and practical aspects (dictations and tions). Oral exams Learners will have one mid-term oral exam and its corresponding make-up. This oral exam will toke place in the second semester. They will be tested on practical aspects (reading of assignments and dialogues in phonetic script, first-sight reading and spontaneous production). In order to get “promacién escrita”, students: * should have attended 80% of the dosses taught, ™ should have obtained a mark of 7 or above in 80% of written assignments, ™ should have passed the two written exams and the oral exam with a mark of 7 or ‘above, without foiling any of them (they should not have had to sit for any make-up exam), ® ond should take the oral part of the final exam for regular students. In order to qualify as regular student, student: = should have attended 70% of the dasses taught, = should have obtained o passing mark of 4 or above in 70% of class assignments, ® should have passed the three exams (two written exams and one oral exam) or the make-up exams, = and should take a final exam for regular students. Final exams Regular students Regular students will take o written exam that consists of doing a dictation and transcription. Having passed this test, they will sit for the oral exam which consists of: * Presenting a theoretical topic of their choice = Reading of texts selected from the booklet “Dictation and Transcription Practice 2018". { 3 UV U oy Facultad de Lenguas ~ Universidad Nacional del Comahue- Fonética y Fonologia Inglesa I * Describing one consonant and one vowel (teachers’ choice). * Reading of a text they have not seen before and speaking spontaneously. Extramural students Extramural students will take a written exam that consists of doing a dictation and transcription. Having passed this test they will do another written exam that comprises theoretical aspects. Finally, they will sit for the oral exam as described above for regular students. If regular and/or extramural students have obtained a mark of 7 (seven) or above in the written exam; they will not retake this section in the following scheduled final exom period. They will just sit for the oral exam. Timetables for lessons and tutorials as well as deadlines for assignments and fests will be posted at PEDCO or Facebook. Dictation and Transcription Practice: compendium of dictations ond transcriptions to help students to learn the details of English pronunciation and improve their listening comprehension and speaking skills. This booklet -designed by the English Phonetics & Phonology | team- contains texts drawn from textbooks of a pre-intermediate to intermediate level as well as authentic sources.
