We are tasked to do an interview to a two elder regarding their cultural beliefs and practices.
The first elder that we interviewed is Mr. Fortunato Nillo, a 70-year old man from Paloyon, Nabua,
Camarines Sur. Some of his cultural beliefs and practices are: 1) Paggamit o pagdala ng bawang
And the second elder that we have interviewed is Julio Quite,
a 63-year old man from San Miguel, Bato, Cam. Sur. Some of his cultural beliefs and practices
are: 1) He used to go to a faith healer for medication. 2) Not wearing red clothes (or any other
color except from white and black) if someone in their family died. 3) Not taking home foods from
burial or wake. 4) Using garlic as an antidote to “usog”. 5) Not eating meat every Ash Wednesday.
They have a unique cultural beliefs and practices. We also asked them if those culturals beliefs
and practices are still being practiced today and their response are; "Dinah: I think not really, i
mean some of the people now doesn’t believe in those beliefs. The prefer to believe the things that
they can see", "Dianca: Depende kasi yun, kung yung pamilya pa naniniwala sa mga ganyang
pamahiin pero sa tingin ko ginagawa pa naman. Siguro yung alam lang talaga nila","Badeth:
Maybe they are still valued but not as much as how they were valued before. Maybe because of
the modern technological advancements that the world have showed, these cultural beliefs may
have been neglected or forgotten", "Andrea: oo naman, kasi kung yun na yung nakasanayan ng
pamilya why not value it up until now",

Based on the responses of the students we concluded that some of those cultural beliefs are
still being practiced by today’s generation but not as much as they were practiced before. There
are several factors that we have concluded why those cultural beliefs are being forgotten by other
people and it is because today’s generation rely so much on Science, today’s generation are
exposed to high quality of technology, globalization, influences, urbanization, Internet and etc.
Everything now can be explained by science, well, literally not everything, but most of the things.
Long ago, those cultural beliefs are being practiced by people because, I think, it’s their temporary
answers to their own curiosity. But since science is so extra, their curiosity is now answered
correctly, thank to those people who conquered their own curiosity to find answers and solutions
(who are now known as great inventors and scientists). I think the reason why those practices and
beliefs are not being done as much as they were done before because the new generation became
more precise and vigilant of the things surrounding them, they tend to believe what they have saw
really witnessed, they tend to believe what is proven by science, and they tend to be influenced of
what the majority believes. We also considered technology and influences as something that
affects the understanding of today’s generation about cultural beliefs because some of the
technologies and inventions are product of a proven or not proven belief and practices and also
since today’s generation are exposed to modern technologies it became the limelight or spotlight
to everyone and those cultural beliefs are being left behind. Lastly because of Internet and

Globalization today’s generation are exposed to substantial or multitudinous information that
affected their own understanding and they became censorious on filtering information that they
will absorb. Yet, at some point based on the students we have interviewed I think most of them
still believes on some those practices which is a good thing because we shouldn't neglect something
that has been part of our culture or lives because at some point it helped us on what we are today.
