Chapter 1

PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

Introduction

Physical education may be viewed as a program of activity in a school curriculum, as a discipline to be studied, or as a profession
such as teacher or a coach. In all aspect it is concerned with the motor skills needed in such activities as games, dance and exercise. It
is a vital and integral part of general education. A school that have a physical education Curriculum must have complete equipment
and good facilities. Previous international and national surveys as well as other research literature have drawn attention to deficiencies
in the provision together with the challenges presented by in adequate maintenance can detrimentally impact on the nature, scope,
and quality of physical education programmes.

The adequate of facilities, equipments and supplies as well as their utilization are important ingredients in any physical
education and sports programme. In recent times it has beem observed that physical education and sports seems to be
losing steam in almost all the secondary schools in Enugu States. This is being considered as part of the reason why the
state has not been discovering new athletes and performing well in national sports festivals. This situation may likely persist
if there are not adequate resources, especially instructional materials or if those available are not adequately utilized. The
level of sucess of most physical education and sports programmes is greatly dependent on the degree of adequacy and
utilization of up to date facilities, equipments and supplies. This is because they form the hub around which such
programmes revolve (Akindanmi, 1995; Mgbor, 2005; Mgbog and Anyanjor, 2005).

Availability refers to the services/resources that can be obtained in the discharge of certain functions. Longman (2003)
asserts that availability refers to resources ready to be used, able to be used or that can easily be found and used.
Onyejiemezie (2002) noted that availability is a state of making provision for a satisfactory standartd requirement in terms of
teaching resourse to enhance effective instructional activity in a particular subjecg. According to the author, no meaningful
learning and transfer of what has been learned will take place if such learning occurs in a situati9n devoid of relevant
activities and concrete experiences. In other words, availability can be defined as human and material resources ready to
use in teaching physical education. In recognition of the importance of the availability of resources in teaching Olaitan, Igbo,
Ekong, Nwachukwu and Onyemaechi (2000) noted that no meaningful learning or transfer of what has been learned will
take place if such learning occurs in a situation devoid of relevant materials and activities as well as concrere experiences.
Tyecimportance of availability of resources cannot be over-emphasized in teaching of physical education in schools. The
availability of resources instructional facilities, equipment and supplies as well as adequate personnel motivates the
learners, increases the teacher's efficiency and promotes the productivity of the teacher.

Facilities, supplies and equipment provision are important aspect of physical education and sports programme
management.

Physical Education facilities must be needed to be facilitative and comfortableto the student to perform activities. It may
be observed that the facilities provided by the school administration are usually neat and well established.
Student's academic performance and graduation rates have been the area of interest for higher educational circle.
Many recent studies were carried out to explore factors that affecting university student's academic performance. Hanson
(2000) reported that Student performance is affected by different factors such as learning disabilities, gender and race.
Simmons, et. al (2005) concluded that family income level, attending full time, receiving grant aid and completing advanced
level classes in high school having statistically significant effects on college persistence among first generation college
students. Garton, et.al. (2000) carried out a study with freshmen college students to evaluate the efficiency of student
learning style and other university admission variable in predicting student academic performance and retention. Hijazi and
Naqvi (2006) conducted a study to find out the factors which affecting college students' performance. In this study,
researcher mainly focus to explore the factors that associated with performance of students in intermediate examination.
This study conclude that attitude towards attendance in classes, time allocation for studies, parents level of income,
mother's age and mother's education were main factors that affect performance of students of private colleges.

A high performance school facility is a facility that creates a healthy environment that is conducive to learning while
supporting the community and saving energy, resources and money. (Center for Innovative School Facilities)
Learning environment is considered to be one of the teaching learning principles that a school sets. Those learning
environment are the school facilities that is needed to be facilitative and comformable to the students to perform. It may be
observed that the facilities that provided by the school administrators are usually neat and well established. There are some
establishment that is hard to reconstructed. The reason behind it is the memories and the history made within the facility. It
is very heartbreaking to demolish a facility with full of achievements but reconstructing and rebuilding it leads to an effective
innovation and developments that help the students to perform in class, especially the practical performance that they need
to focus.

An effective school facilities is responsive to the changing programs of educational delivery, and at a minimum should
provide a physical environment that is comfortable, safe, secure, well-illuminated, well-ventilated and aesthetically pleasing.

The students can get restless and fidgety that disrupts their mind in focusing to the subject. And according to the
writers, in order to have a good and better teaching learning process, the order should be neat and well-organized.
According to Aquino (2001), “There is a clear evidence that a school really promotes this principle through different facilities
that it had established in relation t the courses it offers. ” meaning to say, to have a better and effective learning, the school
facilities provided by the school should be suitable to the enrolled students.

1. This study aims to find out the benefits of school facilities to the performance of students taking physical
education in PDFMNHS.
2. This study aims if the school facilities are significantly related to the performance of grade 7 students.

Background of the Study

Physical Education as education "through" movement is best conceived of being that part of the educational process
which aims to enhance and harmonize the physical, intellectual, social and emotional aspect of growing individual through
proffesionally selected and directed physical activities.

Sports facilities is one factor that affect learning and it should be given a great focus and study with regards to its
improvement especially when it comes to quantity so that it would suit needs of all students.

School ahould own site adequate for their own building, physical education and students where this course is required
in the curriculum. Its size, nature, location and accessibility must adequate serve the purpose of the school.

Successful learning by many factors, one of which is the classroom itself, it is general accepted that teaching and
learning do take place, anywhere we often say. A goofd teacher should be able to in spite of unfavourable circumstances.
However, doing so in an athmosphere conducive to learning it is always an advantage the proper setting can make up in
some way for deficiencies in other area that affect students learning.

There are different opinions of what considered an extra-curricular activity. A few examples of activities outside the
school may include pro-social activities such as dances, team sports, and performing arts while in school involvement
activities may include intramurals and academic clubs. Different level of activity involvement and participation may
positively impact future success for those participate.

Eccles, (2003) stated in his research that both the type of physical education programs and level of participation may
impact the individual's development.

Frederick's and Eccles (2006) found out that, activity participation can pe linked to positive academic outcomes,
including improved grades, test scores more school engagement and increased educational aspirations, while on the other
hand, Eccles and Barber (1999) have noted possible negative concequences of some types of extra-curricular activities. If
a coach is degrading to team or if numbers of the clubs exclude other, or just over involvement with every spare minutes
scheduled in multiple activities, students may find there are negative consequences for participation. Either way, it is
important to know why student should get involved in positive activities and how to avoid the negative impact of over
participation.

Along the area of sports facilities and the academic performance the researchers is prompted to find out whether
recreational facilities has an effect on the academic performancr of the student's athletes in Laguna State Polytechnic
University.
A growing body of research has found that school facilities can have a profound impact on both teachers and students
outcomes. With respect to the teachers, school facilities affect teacher recruitment, retention, commitment and effort. With
respect to the students, school facilities affect health, behavior, engagement, learning and growth in achievement.

The quality of a school’s environment and its facilities has a strong influence on students’ learning. Besides regular use
in organizing and managing a school’s activities, records of a school’s physical facilities and material resources such as
furniture and equipment can provide to the data to derive many indicators for assessing the quality of education in a school.

School facilities are one of the basic educational requirements, and it is necessary to maintain safe and high-quality
school facilities from the perspective of maintaining and improving educational levels in line with the developmental stage.

Physical Education plays an important role in the development of an individual just as a school room education. Hence,
it is important that physical education can be incorporated along with a student’s curriculum. Physical education is
considered a supplement to the learner’s growing value system. Physical Education is one subject in the curriculum which
develop the values of teamwork, discipline, camaraderie and the physical health of the body. It is important as on of the
subjects in a school therefore school must provide facilities that can meet the needs of the students to have an outstanding
performance.
In this study, the researcher will emphasize the significance of school facilities in physical education and its impact to
the performance of the students taking this subject.

Literature review

Apart from increasing physical activity as one of the factors to combat obesity, physical activity has also been
associated with a healthier self-image, lower stress levels (Harrison & Narayan 2003), improved self-esteem (

The university is a critical context in which people consolidate a lifestyle that is likely to support their future health
(Molin-Gracia, Castillo, & Pablos, 2009). The majority of the studies carried out on university students have
observed that an active lifestyle is an important factor for mental health (e.g., Kai & Yamazaki, 2009).

Age

Ausubel (2006) state that man’s physical, psychological, and cognitive capacities usually weaken and retrogress as age
progress. However age creates more experience has been accepted as a great teacher.
Renaroyo (2011) explained that age is basically a period wherein the individual labelled towards maturity. He
categorized as into three types, such as: early adult age from 18 to 39 years old, middle adult age from 40 to 59 years old
and late adult age from 60 years old until death.

Gender

A parallel viewpoint has been conceived by veddar (2006) that gender is a terminology rooted from all French work
“genre” which means born with sex referent either male or female in classification. Normally “genre” is passed from parents
to children and control how individual looks.

Maloles (2011) explained that woman have more moderate physiological response stress. Medical and physiological
studies reveal several variations in men and women capabilities cause by gender.

In support to the foregoing bibliographic citations, kuhlen (2007) claimed that gender refers either to male or female
category so as to differentiate the sexuality of a person. In this case, gender is biologically passed from parents to siblings of
the some blood relationship.

School Facilities
School context and its facilities could be an important factor in students performance. In fact, identifying factors related
to the school environment has become a research focus among educational practitioners. For instance, research suggests
that students performance is associated with a safe and orderly school climate (Reyonds et al., 2001) Researchers also
found a negative impact on student achievement where deficiencies of school features of components such as
temperature, lighting and age exist. In a study by Harner (2001), temperatures above 23 degree C (74 D egree F)
adversely affected the performance of the students.

Physical Education

Physical education is an integral part of the total education of every child in kindergarten through Grade 12. It is a
subject that contributes to the great deal to the ethos of the school. The philosopy of the PE department in harmony with
that of the whole school, aim to promote students and staff alike to partake a healthy and active lifestyle. Its intention is to
develop the whole child – mentally, socially, emotionally, spiritually and physically. Therefore it directed to fulfill each child’s
needs in a positive learning environment, which promotes enjoyment and some appreciation of the subject area.

Theoretical Framework

According to Uline and Tschannen-Moran, the condition of school facilities may also directly affect to the students
performance. Their work suggested that ‘school climate’, which can influence teacher quality satisfaction may be impacted
by teachers’ perception in school facilities. According to Harb and El-shaarawin (2006), Students performance cannot be
traced to a single factor but by multiplicity of factors such as environment, student attitude, teaching techniques, school
facilities, teacher qualification and many more. Also according to them, there are two types of factors affecting student
academic achievement. These are internal and external classroom factors. Internal classroom factors includes, student’s
competence, learning or school facilities, school or class environment.

Wunti (2014) defines school facilities as “engines of growth in learning’’ which supports the teacher and the learner
for an effective and efficient teaching and learning for the attainment of the goals and objectives of the education.

According to Raychauduri, Amivata, Majundar (2010), School facilities have been observed as a potent factor to quality
education. It is importance to the teaching and learning process cannot be over-emphasized. Effective learning can occur
through one’s interaction with the environment. Environment here refers to the facilities that are available to facilitate
students learning outcome or performance. These facilities include school building, classroom, gymnasium, etc. These
facilities goes a long to affect ot enhance students performance or achievement. Adesola (2008) found out the level of
available resources is indeed a plus to the teachers and goes a long way to show the level of ingenuity and commitment of
the teacher towards effective delivery of lesson and performance.
