SECTION A: OBJECTIVE 1 Knowledge and Understanding
23 questions, 31 points

Most questions are multiple choice - use a blue or black pen to draw a circle around the letter, A
or B or C or D, which gives the correct or best answer to each question. Multiple choice questions
each carry 1 point.
Questions 22 & 23 should be completed as instructed.

Questions 1 and 2 refer to the following information:

investigation

C. Do some preliminary research; make a hypothesis; carry out an investigation; collect and treat
results

D. Carry out an investigation; collect and treat results; make a hypothesis; do some preliminary
research

A2. The investigation has variables, which the scientist either tests or controls. Which group of
statements is correct?

A. The mass of the carrots is the dependent variable; the light the scientist shines is the
independent variable; keeping the same temperature throughout the investigation is a controlled
variable

B. The mass of the carrots is the independent variable; the light the scientist shines is the
dependent variable; keeping the same temperature throughout the investigation is a controlled
variable

C. The mass of the carrots is a controlled variable; the light the scientist shines is the dependent
variable; keeping the same temperature throughout the investigation is the independent variable

D. The mass of the carrots is the dependent variable; the light the scientist shines is a controlled
variable; keeping the same temperature throughout the investigation is the independent variable

SECTION C Objective 4 Experimental Investigation

GRAPH QUESTION – 6 marks

A student set up the experiment, to investigate friction. The investigation is shown in the diagram.
Newton
(force)
meter

Method
1. The student put masses on the sledge and pulled it gently with a Newton meter, to measure
the force needed until it just started to move. (Force is measured in units called Newtons
or N.)
2. The student recorded the force shown by the Newton meter which was needed to move the
sledge.
3. Extra masses were then added to the sledge to make it heavier.
4. The student recorded the force needed to move the heavier sledge.
5. This was repeated a total of 5 times.

The results of the investigation are shown in the table.

Total mass of the

Force needed to move
sledge + additional
the sledge (N)
masses (gm)
2.4 10
2.8 11.5
3.2 13
3.6 14.5
4.4 17.5

QUESTIONS TO ANSWER

1. Use the graph grid to draw a graph of the results, plotting MASS in grams against
FORCE in Newtons. (Decide what sort of graph is best and then decide whether mass or
force should be plotted on the ‘y’ or ‘x’ axes.)
(4 points)

2. Study the results of the investigation and your graph, and then write a conclusion in the
space beneath the graph.
