Key concept: Form Related concepts: System & Global context: Orientation in space and time
Representation
SOI: Mathematics can be represented in different forms as influenced by location and space
Time assigned: 1 hour Time Taken: Due Date: 16.08. 2019

1. a) If t represents the time in hours and C

represents cost ($), construct a table of values for
0–3 hours for the cost of playing ten‐pin bowling
at the new alley.

t = time in hours
C = cost in dollars

C = 6t + 2

Time (t) Fixed cost Total cost (C) $

0 2 2
1 2 8
2 2 14
3 2 20

C=6*0+2
C=2

C=6*1+2
C=8

C=6*2+2
C = 12 + 2
C = 14

C=6*3+2
C = 20

b) Use your table of values to plot a graph of time versus cost. (Hint: Ensure your time axis
(horizontal axis) extends to 6 hours and your cost axis (vertical axis) extends to $40.)

C = 6t + 2

DPSI/MYP4/Mathematics
c) What is the y‐intercept? What does the y‐intercept represent in terms of the cost?

The intercept is the point on a Cartesian plane where the line intercepts the y axis. The y
intercept can calculated by assuming x as 0 in a linear equation.

Fixed price = y-intercept

In term of cost the y-intercept describes the cost of bowling if the time spent is less than an
hour. This means that only the fixed price will be charged and not the cost per hour.

d) Calculate the gradient.

Rise / run
6/1
6

e) Write a linear equation to describe the relationship between cost and time.

y = 6x + 2

f) Use your linear equation from part e to calculate the cost of a 5-hour tournament.

y=5*6+2
y = 32

g) Use your graph to check your answer to part f.

2. Show that the quadrilateral ABCD is a parallelogram.

BC2 = (3-7)2 + (6-8)2

BC2 = (-4)2 + (-2)2
BC = √16 + 4
BC = √20

BA2 = (3-1)2 + (6-2)2

BA = √4 + 16
BA = √20

AD2 = (5-7)2 + (4-8)2

AD2 = 4 + 16
AD = √20

DC2 = (5-7)2 + (4-8)2

DC2 = 4 + 16
DC = √20

3. Triangle ABC is an isosceles triangle where AB = AC, B is the point (−1, 2), C is the point (6, 3)
and A is the point (a, 3a). Find the value of the integer constant a.

√ (a - 6)2 + (3a -3)2 = √ (a+1)2 + (3a-2)2

(a - 6)2 + (3a -3)2 = (a+1)2 + (3a-2)2

a2 + 36 + 9a2 + 9 = a2 + 1 + 9a2 + 4

10a2 + 45 = 10a2 + 5

There are no solutions

4. ABCD is a parallelogram.
a) Find the gradients of AB and BC.

AB

8-6/3-1
2/2
=1

BC

8-1/3-6
-7/3

b) Find the coordinates of the point D (x, y).

c) Show that the diagonals AC and BD bisect each other.

Gradient of AC =

5. The map shows the proposed course for a yacht race. Buoys
have been positioned at A (1, 5), B (8, 8), C (12, 6), and D (10,
w).
a) How far is it from the start, O, to buoy A?

O (0,0), A (1,5)

AO2 = (1-0)2 + (5-0)2

AO2 = 1 + 25
AO = √26
AO ≈ 5.1

b) The race marshall boat, M, is situated halfway between buoys A and C. What are the coordinates of
the boat’s position?

A(1,5) , C(12,6)

1 + 12 / 2 , 5 + 6 / 2

M(6.5,5.5)

c) Stage 4 of the race (from C to D) is perpendicular to stage 3 (from B to C). What is the gradient of
CD?

B(8,8) , C(12,6)

M = y2-y1/x2-x1

M = 8-6/8-12
M = -2/4
M = -½

Negative reciprocal of m = m of CD
M=2

d) Find the linear equation that describes stage 4.

y = 2x + c

6 = 2 * 12 + c
6 – 24 = c
-18 = C

Y = 2x – 18

DPSI/MYP4/Mathematics
e) Hence determine the exact position of buoy D.

C(12,6) , D(10,y)

M=2

2 = 6 – y / 12 – 10
2=6–y/2
2*2=6–y
4 – 6 = -y
-2 = -y
2=y

f) An emergency boat is to be placed at point E, (7, 3). How far is the emergency boat from the
hospital, located at H, 2 km north of the start?

H(0,2) , E(7,3)

HE2 = (0-7)2 + (2-3)2

HE2 = 49 + 1
HE = √50

6. The graphs alongside indicate the distance travelled for

different amounts of fuel consumed at speeds of 50 kmph
(graph A) and 80 kmph (graph B).

a) Find the gradient of each line.

A = 300/30
= 10

B = 350/25
= 16

b) What do these gradients mean

The gradients define steepness of a graph

c) If fuel costs $1:17 per litre, how much more would it cost to travel 1000 km at 80 kmph compared
with 50 kmph?

7. Students of a school are standing in rows and
columns in their playground for a drill
practice. A, B, C and D are the positions of
four students as shown in figure. Is it possible
to place Jessica in the drill in such a way that
he is equidistant from each of the four
students A, B, C and D? If so, what should be
his position?

8. Ayaan starts walking from his house to office.

Instead of going to the office directly, he goes
to a bank first, from there to his daughter’s school and then reaches the office. What is the extra
distance travelled by Ayaan in reaching his office? (Assume that all distances covered are in straight
lines). If the house is situated at (2, 4), bank at (5, 8), school at (13, 14) and office at (13, 26) and
coordinates are in km.
