Quinolones are bacteriocidal drugs. These inhibit the bacterial DNA gyrase enzyme which is necessary for
DNA replication.

(Bacteriocidal & bacteriostatic)
MOA: *bind to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit & inhibit protien synthesis. Also disrupt the integrity of
bacterial cell membrane.
Aminoglycosides derived from Streptomyces genus are named with the suffix -mycin e.g. Streptomycin,
Neomycin, Kanamycin whereas those that are derived from Micromonospora are named with the suffix -micin
e.g. Gentamicin

Indicated in: Infections caused by susceptible pathogens, pneuomonias, urinary tract infections, endometritis,
and septicemias that are resistant to other antibiotics.
Antagonists: Amphotericin B, Cephalosporins produce nephrotoxicity.
Adverse side effects: Intestinal flora may be disrupted during therapy with this drug, diarrhea may occur. Other

ANTIBIOTICS - Class Tetracycline
1. Oxytetracycline LA
MOA: Bacteriostatic effect, caused by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria.This antibiotic prevents transfer-
RNA (tRNA) molecules (a type of nucleic acids which transport amino acids) from binding to the 30S subunit of
bacterial ribosomes.
Indications: Infections of organs or tissues caused by tetracycline-sensitive strains; anaplasmosis, often
ineffective for endocarditis, empyema, meningitis, septic arthritis and osteomyelitis.
Antagonists: Antacids, milk, diuretics, methoxyflurane, penicillins, ferrous sulfate.
Adverse side effects: Causes renal problems when administered at high doses, can affect bone and teeth
formation (cause straining of teeth) in young animals, should NEVER be given to horses INTRAVENOUSLY;
may cause drug fever in cats, and some hepatotoxicity may occur.
Note: Max use of 10ml at single site and don’t use in Horses

MOA: A protein synthesis inhibitor by acting on 50S ribosomal subunit,preventing peptide bond formation.
Excellent BBB penetration, chloramphenicol remains the first choice treatment for staphylococcal brain
abscesses.
DOC: in the treatment of Meningitis & Encephalitis, Salmonelosis & Leptospirosis, Upper respiratory tract
infections, urinary tract infections, enteritis, and bacterial conjunctivitis.
Adverse side effects: Include blood dyscrasias (means imbalance of four body fluids i.e. blood, bile, lymph
and phlegm.

ANTIBIOTICS - Class Sulpha Drugs

Sulfonamides or sulphonamide are bacteriostatic, synthetic antimicrobial agents.
MOD: Certain m/o require p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) to synthesize dihydrofolic acid to produce purines and
ultimately nucleic acids. Sulfonamides,chemical analogs of PABA, are competitive inhibitors of dihydropteroate
synthetase. Sulfonamides therefore are reversible inhibitors of folic acid synthesis and bacterostatic not
bacteriocidal.

Non Steriodal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

NSAIDs are drugs with analgesic and antipyretic (fever-reducing) effects and which have, in higher
doses, anti-inflammatory effects. NSAIDs are usually indicated for the treatment of acute or chronic conditions
where pain and inflammation are present.
MODE OF ACTION: Most NSAIDs act as nonselective inhibitors of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX). COX
catalyzes the formation of prostaglandins and thromboxane from arachidonic acid (itself derived from the
cellular phospholipid bilayer by phospholipase A2). Prostaglandins act (among other things) as messenger
molecules in the process of inflammation.NSAIDS have antipyretic activity and can be used to treat fever. Fever
is caused by elevated levels of prostaglandin E2, which alters the firing rate of neurons within the hypothalamus
that control thermoregulation. Antipyretics work by inhibiting the enzyme COX, which causes the general
inhibition of prostanoid biosynthesis (PGE2) within the hypothalamus. PGE2 signals to the hypothalamus to
increase the body's thermal set point.

1. FLUNIXIN MEGLUMINE
Indicated in: Alleviation of pain associated with musculo skeletal disorders and colic. Other uses include,
endotoxic shock, calf diarrhea, parvovirus sinfection, heat stroke, opthalamic infections and postsurgical pain.
Adverse side effects: In horses, include swelling at injection site, and sweating. In dogs, vomiting,
diarrhea, nephrotoxicity gastric ulceration.

* examethasone is a potent synthetic member of the glucocorticoid class of steroid drugs. It acts as an
anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant. It is 20 to 30 times more potent than the naturally occurring

MODE OF ACTION: Dexamethasone is a glucocorticoid agonist. Unbound dexamethasone crosses cell

DNA elements (glucocorticoid response elements) which results in a modification of transcription and, hence,

Veterinary Medicines used mostly in Reproduction

(Mostly Hormonal preparations to treat Reproductive disorders)
1. ESTROGEN Preparations
Estrogens are a group of hormones synthesized by the ovaries and to a lesser extent by the testes, the adrenal
glands and the placenta.
Clinical use: used to treat persistent corpus luteum, to expel purulent material from the uterus, to expel retained
placenta, and mummified fetus, and to promote weight gain. In dogs, estrogens are used to induce abortion and
to control urinary incontinence.
Adverse side effects: cause severe anemia, prolonged estrus, genital irritation and follicular cysts.
Caution: Estrogens should not be given during pregnancy.
A. Stilboesterol Dipropionate
Stilbosterol 10 mg/ml LA=10 ml MA=4ml SA=2ml 10 ml Star
B. Estradiol Dipropionate

2. PROSTAGLANDINS PREPARATIONS
Prostaglandins are a group of naturally occurring long-chain fatty acids that mediate various physiological
events in the body.
Clinical use: treatment of luteal cysts and mummified fetuses, termination of pregnancy and estrus
synchronization.
Adverse side effects: may include uneasiness, frothing at the mouth and milk let down.

4. Oxytocin
Oxytocin is a polypeptide made in the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary for release in response

Clinical use: To augment the force of the uterine contraction during delivery, to aid in the delivery of placenta,
to facilitate the involution of uterus, and to induce milk let down.
Adverse side effects: These are minimal when used according to recommendation
