DIRECTIONS: Complete the table below with the contrasting characteristics,

features, as well as reading strategy differences between academic texts and non-
academic texts.

ACADEMIC TEXTS NON-ACADEMIC TEXTS

1. Academic texts written by professionals in a
given field.
2. They are edited by the authors' peers and
often take years to publish.
3. Their language is formal and will contain words
and terms typical to the field.
4. The authors name will be present, as will their
credentials.
5. There will be a list of references that indicate
where the author obtained their information
using in the article.
6. Acdemic texts has two authors.
7. The language of academic texts is very formal.
8. Academic texts are critical and objective texts.
9. Academic articles can be found in periodicals
similar to the Journal of Psychology, Childhood
Education or The American Journal of Public
Health.
10. The main forums for publishing academic
research material are: Peer reviewed academic
journals, Conference papers, Research reports,
Postgraduate dissertations & theses and Books.
1. Non-academic texts written for the mass
public.
2. They are published quickly and can be written
by anyone.
3. Their language is informal, casual and may
contain slang.
4.The author may not be provided and will not
have any credentials listed.
5. There will be no reference list.
6. Non-Academic texts has one author, but they
chose to write anonymously.
7. The langauge of non-academic texts is very
casual.
8. Non-Acdemic texts are non-objective texts.
9. Non-Academic articles can be found in
periodicals similar to Time, Newsweek or Rolling
Stone.
10. The following materials are usually sources of
non-academic material: Newspapers, Magazines,
Internet news services, TV & radio programmes,
DVDs, Youtube videos and Most websites.
