CHEMISTRY
HOW CONCENTRATION OF
ELECTROLYTE AFFECTS
VOLTAGE
Tvisha Patil 10C

Aim To find the

effect of change in
concentration of
electrolytes ( CuSO4
ZnSO4 ) on voltage
produced.

Hypothesis If the
concentration of the
electrolyte is
increased then the
voltage produced will
also increase because
more particles are
present in a
concentrated solution
compared to diluted
solutions.

Variables
Independent-
concentration of
electrolyte
Dependent- voltage
produced
Control- volume of
electrolyte
Type of electrolyte
Strip of metal

Apparatus
5 beakers - 3 with
CuSO4of concentration
0.01M 0.1M 0.5M
2
with ZnSO4 of
concentration 0.01M
0.1M
Voltmeter of 10V
2 wires
1 strip of Cu
1 strip of Zn
Salt bridges (KNO3)
Sandpaper (to sand
the metal strip)

Method
1.Fill 3 beakers with
with CuSO4 of
concentration 0.01M,
0.1M,0.5M
respectively. Fill 2
beakers with ZnSO4 of
concentration 0.01M,
0.1M respectively.
2.Dip folded filter
paper in KNO3 to
create a salt bridge
3.Place a sanded
strip of copper in
one of the beakers
filled with copper
solution. Place
sanded strip of zinc
in one of the zinc
solution beakers
4.connect the wires
to both the strips
and complete the
circuit by attaching
both wires to the
voltmeter .
5.Repeat steps2 to 4
for all
concentrations. When
testing for copper
keep concentration of
ZnSO4 same, winless
testing zinc keep
concentration of
Copper the same.

Interpretation
As the concentration
of the solution
increases so does the
voltage and this is
not specific to a
certain solution only
but is applicable for
both solutions
tested.

Evaluation
The hypothesis I
stated earlier is
true as proven by my
data and results
found. I had
previously stated
that as concentration
of the electrolyte
increases so does the
voltage

Evaluation of methods
All my steps were
carried out to the
highest potential so
after evaluation, I
do not feel any
change is necessary

Conclusion
The results supported
my data and results
and all the steps
carried out were of
the highest
potential. The
voltage produced by
the cell is directly
proportional to the
concentration of the
electrolyte solution.
