Sending Messages
Communication means sending a thought from
one person to another or from one place to
another. The simplest way is to talk. When you
say something, your friend hears what you say
and understands your meaning. The only
problem is this: how do you tell things to your
friend when she is in a different place?
Well, one way is just to go to the place where
your friend is. However, that is not always
possible. For example, if your friend lives very
far way, you may need to fly in an airplane to
reach your friend in one day. In the old days,
people sent messages over long distances with
runners. You would tell your thought to the
runner, and the runner would run or travel to
your friend and tell her. This was the main way
to communicate through most of human history
However, this way of sharing knowledge was
very slow and hard.
Sometimes, people would use other ways of
sharing ideas. In Africa, people would use
music to send thoughts. One person could hit a
drum and another person could hear it and
understand the meaning. For example, maybe
hitting a drum three times, again and again,
would mean "we have found food."
In North America, people used to send thoughts
with smoke. They would make a fire, and
change the smoke rising from the fire.
Someone far away could see the smoke in the
air and understand the meaning. For example,
maybe two big balls of smoke and one small
one, again and again, could mean "send help."
Smoke and drums were useful, but messages
could only go a short way using these ways.
Today, new machines and ideas for
communication let us send our thoughts in
ways that are thousands of times faster and
easier than before.
Enviando mensajes
La comunicación significa enviar un
pensamiento de una persona a otra o de un lugar
a otro. La forma más simple es hablar. Cuando
dices algo, tu amigo escucha lo que dices y
entiende tu significado. El único problema es
este: ¿cómo le cuentas cosas a tu amiga cuando
está en un lugar diferente?
Bueno, una forma es ir al lugar donde está tu
amigo. Sin embargo, eso no siempre es posible.
Por ejemplo, si su amigo vive muy lejos, es
posible que deba volar en un avión para llegar
a tu amigo en un día. En los viejos tiempos, la
gente enviaba mensajes a largas distancias con
mensajeros. Le dirías tu pensamiento al
mensajero, y el mensajero correría o viajaría
donde tu amigo y se lo contaría. Esta fue la
principal forma de comunicarse durante la
mayor parte de la historia humana. Sin
embargo, esta forma de compartir el
conocimiento fue muy lenta y difícil.
A veces, las personas usan otras formas de
compartir ideas. En África, la gente usaría
música para enviar pensamientos. Una persona
podría tocar un tambor y otra persona podría
escucharlo y comprender el significado. Por
ejemplo, quizás tocar un tambor tres veces, una
y otra vez, significaría "hemos encontrado
comida".
En América del Norte, la gente solía enviar
pensamientos con humo. Encenderían un fuego
y cambian el humo que salía del fuego. Alguien
lejano podía ver el humo en el aire y entender
el significado. Por ejemplo, tal vez dos grandes
bolas de humo y una pequeña, una y otra vez,
podrían significar "enviar ayuda".
El humo y tambores eran útiles, pero los
mensajes solo podían ser cortos utilizando estas
formas. Hoy en día, las nuevas máquinas y las
ideas para la comunicación nos permiten enviar
nuestros pensamientos de una manera que es
miles de veces más rápida y fácil que antes.
