● 8.EE.1: Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent
numerical expressions

Technology for Learners Being Used

● Thinglink

Technology for Teacher Being Used

● Classtools QR Treasure Hunt Creator

What 21st Century Skills Are Students Using?

● Students will work collaboratively to answer questions accessed by scanning QR codes
that are hung throughout the classroom.
● Students will need to communicate mathematically with peers in order to successfully
answer the questions presented to them in the QR Scavenger Hunt.

Essential Vocabulary
● Base
● Exponent
● Coefficient
● Evaluate
● Square of a Number
● Power

Materials
● Student Chromebooks

Introduction/Engagement
● Students will see the expression 4n2 on the Smartboard upon walking into the
classroom. We will review the parts of this expression, including the coefficient, base,
and exponent. Students will check our ideas by interacting with this expression through
the use of Thinglink.
Lesson (Teacher Input, Guided, Independent Activities, etc.)
● The lesson will begin with a review of vocabulary associated with the parts of an
exponential expression. The use of Thinglink will allow students to interact with an
expression to verify the proper terms for each part of the expression.
● Students will be formed into groups of 2-3 and will participate in a QR Code Scavenger
Hunt.
● Students will use a QR Code reader app installed on their district-issued Chromebooks
to scan each of ten QR codes that are hung throughout the classroom. Each QR code
will direct students to a question that they must answer collaboratively. Each question
will review the vocabulary associated with exponential expressions, as well as how to
square numbers and raise numbers to the zero and first powers.
● Groups of students will record their answers to the ten questions on Google Doc, which
will be submitted via Google Classroom at the end of the activity.
● The last ten minutes of the lesson will be devoted to going over the answer to each
question to gauge student understanding, which will help determine if there is a need for
further attention to the basics of evaluating exponential expressions.
● Homework will be to watch a Mashup Math video on Multiplying Exponential Expressions
in preparation for tomorrow’s lesson. This will be an Edpuzzle video with questions
embedded to prompt student thinking and to provide the teacher with information
regarding student understanding.

Modifications
● The vocabulary terms reviewed in this lesson will be posted around the classroom in
Spanish for our English Language Learners.
● Questions from the QR Code Scavenger Hunt will be printed in large font for students
who have a visual impairment.

Enrichment
● More complex exponential expressions will be available for students who complete the
QR Code Scavenger Hunt quickly and are ready to tackle more difficult expressions.
