Schematic of the Transmission Output Speed Sensor 2
For the transmission output speed sensors, the ECM determines that this condition
exists by comparing the sensor 1 and sensor 2 signals to each other. This diagnostic
code is recorded when one of the sensors shows a valid speed signal that is above the
minimum and the other sensor signal is below the level for dropout.
Note: Use the following procedure for the D6R, D7R, and the D8R only.
This diagnostic code will occur if the wiring for the transmission intermediate speed
sensor and the wiring for the output speed sensor is exchanged. The diagnostic code
becomes inactive when the transmission is in first gear or third gear. Use the 4C-8195
Control Service Tool in order to determine if the wires for the speed sensor are
exchanged. Go to mode 7 for component data display. Use the "+/-" switch in order to
change the component number to 673. Operate the machine in first gear. There should
be a numerical value in the display which increases with vehicle speed. Shift to second
gear. If the wires are exchanged, the value that is displayed will go to zero. For an
additional check, compare the values for components 671, 673, 674 and 675 when the
transmission is in first gear and in second gear. When the transmission is in first gear all
four codes should have the same value. When the transmission is in second gear, 671
and 673 should have the same value. When the transmission is in second gear, the value
for 674 and 675 should be zero. If the wires for the speed sensor are exchanged, the
value for 671 and 675 will be zero. If the wires for the speed sensor are exchanged, 673
and 674 will have the same value.
To correct this problem, remove the transmission access cover at the rear of the
machine. There will be two connectors for speed sensors near the lower left side of the
transmission case. The connectors are under the cross shaft of the bevel gear. The one to
the left will have gray wires and orange wires. The one on the right will have blue wires
and brown wires. There are two additional connectors for the speed sensor that are
located behind the control stack. These connectors are the connectors that are
exchanged. The connector that is located to the left should have green wires and white
wires. The connectors that are located to the right should have yellow wires and purple
wires. Position these connectors in the proper locations. There is a tab that locks on top
of the connector. The tab must be depressed in order to remove the connector from the
solenoid.
Use the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool to verify that the problem has been corrected. In
second gear, components 671 and 673 should read the same value. Component 674 and
component 675 should read zero.
Note: It may be necessary to move the machine in order to detect a problem for the
transmission intermediate speed sensor and the output speed sensor. The following
procedures can be used for troubleshooting the transmission speed sensor.
System Response:
This diagnostic code causes the ECM to be unable to calculate speed ratios. Diagnostic
codes will show slippage on the forward clutch and the reverse clutch of the
transmission.
Test Step 1. CHECK THE SENSOR AND CHECK THE HARNESS AT THE
TRANSMISSION
Before performing the following procedures, verify that the battery power in the
ohmmeter is good and verify that the ohmmeter is set to the proper range of resistance.
B. Disconnect the machine harness from the internal harness of the transmission at
the transmission case.
C. At the transmission case, measure the resistance between the two contacts of the
sensor.

This diagnostic code is recorded when the voltage of the solenoid circuit is above
normal. The brakes will not disengage and the machine will not move.
Note: Ensure that CID 0722 FMI 03 is on hold and that the fault present indicator
shows "SERV CODE". In order to correctly determine the status of the fault present
indicator, turn the keyswitch ON while the brake pedal is completely released.
Completely depress the pedal and release the pedal again. The fault present indicator
will only show "SERV CODE" for CID 0722 FMI 03 when the pedal is released. This
will happen only after the pedal has been cycled completely since the last powerup. Use
the same procedure in order to clear the diagnostic code after repairs have been made.

"O 018" indicates that the switch is open and the sensor has a duty cycle of 18%.
D. Record the value of the duty cycle for the sensor while the brake pedal is fully
released.
E. Slowly depress the pedal until the state of the switch changes from "O" to "C".
Record the value of the duty cycle of the sensor.
Note: If the display does not change from "O" to "C", the switch is too far out of
adjustment or the switch is faulty. Adjust the switch manually in order to change
the state of the switch when the pedal is fully depressed. Continue with this
procedure. If the state of the switch does not change, the switch is faulty.
Replace the switch.
F. Calculate the difference between the values that were recorded in step "2.d" and
step "2.e". The result of the calculation is called the differential value. The sign
of the value that is calculated is of no importance.
Expected Result:
The difference in the value of step "2.f" must be within specifications. The differential
value is described in the following list:
For the D5M, D6M, D6R and D7R the differential value is 15 to 21.
For the D10R and D11R the differential value is 14 to 16.
Results:
Repair: Adjust the trip point for the switch through the hole in the front of the
pedal housing. Adjust the switch until the state of the switch changes within the
specified range.
Stop.
A. Inspect the contacts and clean the contacts of the harness connectors.
D. Enter service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System and clear all inactive
diagnostic codes.
E. Operate the machine. Be sure to use full range of the brake pedal during
operation.
Expected Result:
Results:
YES - The problem has not been corrected. The ECM has failed.
Repair: Exit this procedure and perform the diagnostic code procedure again. If
the problem persists, the ECM may have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM,
always contact your dealership's Technical Communicator for possible
consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time.
See the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
Stop.
NO - The diagnostic code is NOT present. The problem does not exist at this
time. The initial problem was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or
a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected.
Resume normal machine operation. Stop.
