Joey D.

OCON, PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering (Philippines)

Education
Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Program (2016), Asian Institute of Management
(AIM)
PhD Environmental Science and Engineering (2015), Gwangju Institute of Science and
Technology, South Korea
MS Chemical Engineering (2011), University of the Philippines Diliman, Philippines
BS Chemical Engineering (2008), University of the Philippines Diliman, Philippines

Information/ Contributions:
 Since founding Laboratory of Electrochemical Engineering (LEE)
in 2014, the laboratory has contributed to more than 50 international
publications in ISI and Scopus journals. He is currently supervising
4 PhD and 22 MS students at the Chemical Engineering, Energy
Engineering, and Environmental Engineering graduate programs
at UP Diliman, and 8 BS ChE students. He has completed six
research projects at Project Leader and has secured more than
PhP 140M of research funding since 2016.
 He formed the Laboratory of Electrochemical Engineering , one of the youngest laboratories at
the Department of Chemical Engineering in UP Diliman, to create renewable sources of energy
(fuel cell systems), conversion and storage energy devices (batteries), clean water production,
and environmental process technology (CO2-to-fuel conversion).
 While at RLI, Joey worked with the Off-Grid Systems Group in quantifying the market potential
of the transformation of the diesel-operated island grids in the Philippines into renewable energy-
based hybrid energy systems. Growing up in the Southern Philippines and having been exposed
to life in rural areas, he believes that access to affordable clean energy is key to rural economic
development, and more specifically to improving the quality of life.
 He is among the 17 ASEAN Science and Technology (S&T) Fellows - chosen based on their
record and potential to promote science-based policymaking in the region - for the year 2018-
2019 as ASEAN works on issues related to sciences and technology.

Research focus:
Electrochemical energy storage, heterogeneous catalysis, green technology and renewable
energy, science and technology policy
- He focuses on efficient electrode materials and processes in electrochemical technologies
for energy and environmental applications.

More Details on Contributions:

 Fuel Cell Systems.

- Joey D. Ocon, PhD , together with Hansaem Jang, Seunghwa Lee, Jae Kwang Lee,
Jaeyoung Lee, conducted a research which demonstrates the possibility of direct power
generation from waste coffee grounds (WCG) via high-temperature carbon fuel cell
technology. As a first report on the use of coffee as a carbon-neutral fuel, this study
shows the potential of waste biomass (e.g. WCG) in sustainable electricity generation in
fuel cells.

 Hybrid Energy Systems for Off- Grid Electrification.

- Energy poverty or lack of access to electricity is still a pressing development
challenge worldwide particularly in archipelagic countries like the Philippines. As
rural electrification in these remote areas through on-grid extension becomes
costly, these communities resort to diesel-powered off-grid generators,
characterized by high operating costs, unstable supply and price of fuel, and
environmental issues. The deployment of clean energy alternatives is clearly
needed, but these must be selected systematically using multiple but possibly
conflicting criteria. Ocon and his team evaluated eight technology combination
options using six criteria covering socioeconomic, environmental, and technical aspects.
