guiding principles
b. enumerated the advantages and disadvantages in teaching and
learning processes including ICT
c. Role of ICT in the Process of Teaching and Learning

Guide Questions:

1. What is the impact of ICT on education

2. What are the factors affecting technology integration in Teaching
and Learning
3. What is the impact of Information Communication Technology (ICT)
to both teacher and learners
4. How ICT brought great impact in integrating in Special Education

What is Information Communication Technology?

Information and Communications Technology commonly termed as ICT comes from

the acronym IT and CT and refers to methods of storing, manipulating and
communicating information.

What is the Role of ICT on education?

 The new ICT enables self-paced learning through various tools such as
assignments, computer etc. as a result of this the teaching learning
enterprise has become more productive and meaningful.
 ICT help facilitate the transaction between producers and users by
keeping the students updated and enhancing
 This promotes active learning, sharing of ideas, discussion and also provides
immediate feedback.
 This activates paced learning and allows effective mapping of learning path
ways.
 This requires high quality meaningful digital content to be made available to

Impact of ICT on education

 Active learning
 Collaborative and Cooperative learning
 Creative Learning
 Integrative learning
 Evaluative learning

Factors affecting technology integration in Teaching and Learning

 lack of time
 lack of access
 lack of resources
 lack of expertise and
 lack of support
 Reliability
 Subject difference in ICT education

Impact of ICT on learners

1. Real world problems

2. Scaffolding
3. Feedback, reflection and guidance
4. Local and global communities
5. Extending teacher learning

Impact of ICT on Teachers

(1) Motivation
(2) Distinctive instructional abilities
(3) Higher productivity of teachers
(4) Essential skills for the Information Age and
(5) Support for new teaching techniques

Conclusion

In order to make use of technology in the classroom effectively, educators should

have a positive attitude toward technology and they should be trained in using the
modern technologies in their respective field of education. Chin and Hortin (1994)
stated that teachers must act as the “change agent” in the relationship between
technology and the students as teachers are more likely to implement the
recommended and proposed changes concerning ICT in education.

Applying Technology In Special Education: Breaking The Barriers

1. human speech recognition and synthesizing, you can avoid the

necessity to use paper and pen during the lessons. Such technology
would be also helpful for students with disorders that don’t allow to
process visual information correctly.
2. The adaptive computing technology allows using digital devices to
bypass challenging tasks. Screen reader applications such as JAWS
along with specially designed Braille keyboards allow visually
challenged students to use the computer.
3. Augmentative communication systems help students with speech
problems to overcome the communication barrier. Such systems use
picture charts, books, and specialized computers providing functions of
word-prediction for more effective communication.

Famous Person with Disability (PWDs) experienced the great impact of

ICT in his life : Stephen Hawking

 A theoretical physicist, astrophysicist, cosmologist, and eminent scientist,

Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with ALS at age 21: he was given 2
more years to live. He lived until he was 76-years-old.
 He had been paralysed from head to toe for over thirty years and used
a voice synthesiser to be able to communicate, and a wheelchair that he
operated through slight movements of the head and eyes.
 None of this prevented him from developing his activity as an exemplary
researcher and professor, and intense personal life that allowed him to
make his illness known to the world

Conclusion

The use of technology in special education helps break the barriers for people with
disabilities and provide them with access to the most relevant educational programs.
Properly designed software and hardware allow students with special needs to get
modern education and achieve any required information online.
