LESSON PLAN with CONTEXTUALIZATION


Lesson Plan on Infinitive (Grade 9)
Prepared by: Cosme, Patricia Anne D.

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the 60-minute discussion, the student should be able to accomplish the
following with 90% accuracy:
 define infinitive by analyzing the given examples;
 construct sentences using the different usage of infinitive; and
 understand the importance of an infinitive in the sentence by identifying its
different function.

II. SUBJECT MATTER


TOPIC: (Grammar) Infinitive/ Grade 9
PRE-REQUISITE: Sentence Pattern, Function of Noun Phrase
MATERIALS:
 Writing materials (Chalk, Marker, Chalkboard)
 Pictures
 Graphic organizer (Word-web)
 Worksheets
 Speaker
 Improvised Microphone
 Powerpoint presentation

III. PROCEDURE
A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES
1. Prayer
2. Greetings and announcement/s
3. Checking of attendance
4. Review of previous lesson
B. MOTIVATION
The teacher will present a game named, “Sing in the blanks”. The goal of the game is for
the participants to supply in the missing lyrics of the song assigned to them. The following
are the mechanics of the game:
1. The class will be divided into six groups with five members each.
2. Each group will assign their group's representative who will give the final missing lyrics
of the
song assigned to them.
3. There will be six singers on the list along with their hit song and each group will choose
one
singer.
C. PROCESSING OF INPUT
1. The teacher will list down all the missing lyrics from the six songs presented.
2. Using a graphic organizer, students will write their observations on the word web
posted on the board.
3. The teacher together with the students will process the observations of the class.
4. The teacher will then announce that the activity has something to do with the lesson for
the day.
5. The students will identify the lesson for the day through the help of the pictures
provided by the teacher.
6. The students will combine the two picture to identify the lesson for the day.
D. DISCUSSION PROPER
1. The students will define what an infinitive is by arranging and putting together the
words they have written on the word web.
2. Then, the teacher will process students' definition of infinitive by comparing their
definition to the definition projected on the powerpoint presentation.
3. The teacher will require the students to identify the important term/s they need to
remember in the definition of infinitive and to justify why the said term/s is/are important.
4. Next, the students will give their own examples of infinitive.
5. The teacher will then present sample sentences with different function/usage of
infinitive. The sample sentences are as follow:
A. To play his newly bought video game without affecting his studies is Juan's only goal
as of now.
B. Pedro hopes to play the newly bought game of his brother by doing the dishes for
him.
C. To win, you need the highest number of points.
D. Eager to get home, Jack left from the hospital early in the day.
E. This is the best time to start.
6. The students will identify the infinitive in each sentence and will justify their answer by
identifying the use or function of the infinitive in the sentence.
A. To play his newly bought game without affecting his studies is Juan’s only goal as of
now.
Answer: “To play” is the infinitive in the sentence because it is the subject of the
sentence.
B. Pedro hopes to play the newly bought game of his brother by doing the dishes for
him.
Answer: “To play” is the infinitive in the sentence. It functions as a noun because it
is the direct object in the sentence.
C. To win, you need the highest number of points.
Answer: “To win” is the infinitive in the sentence. It functions as an adverb because
it describes the verb, “need”
D. Eager to get home, Jack left from the hospital early in the day.
Answer: “To get” is the infinitive in the sentence. It functions as an adverb because
it modifies the adjective eager.

E. This is the best time to start.


Answer: “To start” is the infinitive in the sentence. It functions as an adjective
because it describes the noun that follows it (time).
7. The teacher will check students answer by presenting ways on how to identify the
use of infinitive in the sentence.
8. The students will then answer some drills and practice to master the different
functions/uses of infinitive.

DRILL 1
INSTRUCTIONS: Encircle the infinitive in each sentence. On the blank provided, write
N if the infinitive is used as a noun, Adj if it is used as an adjective, and Adv if it is used
as an adverb. Do this in a crosswise.
___1. The office employees want to spend summer far from the city.
___2. Tim’s suggestion is to take a trip to Boracay.
___3. Andy prefers to visit his uncle in Aklan.
___4. To see the Mayon Volcano is May’s wish.
___5. Kris told the group to decide as early as possible.

DRILL 2 (OPTIONAL)
INSTRUCTIONS: Complete the story with infinitives by filling in the blanks. Write
its usage on the space below the story.

A haunted house

When I was a child I used to spend my holidays at my aunt and uncle’s old country
house. One summer I remember having a strange experience. It was a hot afternoon
and my cousin suggested _____ (1. play) hide-and-seek. But instead of going outside,
we decided ____ (2. play) in the attic. After turning off the lights, we all hid in different
places. I managed ____ (3. hide) behind an old sofa. Then something odd happened. In
the darkness, we heard footsteps come into the room. The footsteps seemed walking
towards the sofa. I wanted ____ (4. move), but I couldn’t. I expected something terrible
____ (5. happen). Then suddenly the footsteps stopped and the door slammed shut.
After waiting for a few seconds, we jumped up and ran downstairs without stopping.
We told my aunt and uncle, but they refused ____ (6. believe) us. Mysteriously the
house burned down a year later. The fire started in the attic.

IV. APPLICATION
The student will play a quiz-bee.

INSTRUCTIONS:
• Form a group with five (5) members each.
• Sit together with your groupmates and form a small circle.
• The leader of the group must assign each member a task.
MECHANICS:
• Each group will identify the infinitive in the sentence and its use. The group
representative will be given a corresponding time to write the answer on the group’s
answering material.
• At the command of the teacher, the group representative must raise the answering
material with their group’s answer written on it. (Failure to observe the proper
command should be given a deduction of 2 (two) points each violation)
• The game will be divided into three (3) rounds: Easy, Average, and Difficult.
• EASY- three (3) sentences
• AVERAGE- three (3) sentences
• DIFFICULT- four (4) sentences
• For the easy round, each correct answer is equivalent to two (2) points. Each group
will be given 10 seconds to answer.
• For the average round, each correct answer is equivalent to four (4) points. Each
group will be given 15 seconds to answer.
• For the difficult round, each correct answer is equivalent to six (6) points. Each group
will be given 15 seconds to answer.

V. GENERALIZATION

The student will redefine infinitive and appreciate the importance of the infinitive in
the sentence by identifying its use in the sentence.

VI. EVALUATION

INSTRUCTIONS: Rewrite the sentence using the infinitive construction. Identify the
function of the infinitive in the sentence and write it in the blank provided.
EXAMPLE: ________1. My brother taught me (dance/how)
NOUN 1. My brother taught me how to dance.

________1. My sister taught me (declame/how).


________2. They haven’t decided yet (put/the furniture/where).
________3. The trainer was explaining (use/the gadget/how).
________4. She forgot to ask (pick her up/where).
________5. He wondered (address/her/whether) or not.
________6. My companion didn’t tell me (do/what).

VII. ASSIGNMENT
INSTRUCTIONS: Work in groups of five. Talk about your fears and worries regarding
home and family affairs. Offer sound pieces of advice or give suggestions to one another. Do
a three (3) paragraph essay about it. Remember to use a minimum of 15 infinitives. Do this
on a one whole sheet of paper. (See attached rubric)
