WHY DO WE LEARN TEFL ?

Here, i would like to explain of the material about Teaching English as a Foreign
Language with the big title is why do we learn TEFL and some sub topic of it
such as english in the world today, language and comunication, and in the
classroom.

First of all i want to explain that we learn TEFL because it does not play an
essential role in national or social life. English still the universal language and it
estimates vary about how many people speak english worldwide but some
believe english speakers are likely to number in the billions. English crosses
cultures, countries and industries and is often used as a ‘common tongue’ if
neither person is a native speaker. This means teaching english can be truly
rewarding because students of english have so many new opportunities and doors
open to them if they hone their skills in english.

English In the World Today

English exists in the world today as a means of international communication as a

way for people from different social groups to communicate with each other and
to fulfil this function it would seem that variation in the language needs to be
curtailed to a certain extent. That is to say, if the language becomes too diverse it
will not remain mutually comprehensible across different social groups. So we
have two impulses at work that are seemingly incompatible, or perhaps even in
conflict, and the question we are faced with is how to render them as consistent,
as both being part of the existence of a single entity we call ‘English’. This is one
of the central issues in english language studies today and it’s a very modern issue
because it has come about as a direct result of the unprecedented position that
english now occupies in the world: as a language with global scope which is
implicated in the history and present-day existence of societies all around the
world. English has a power to intimidate the other languages and english language
influance all of the world.
From that, we can see that the ability of each individual to learn english is
different. Some are developing rapidly, some are not. This is caused by many
factors underlying the difficulty or failure of the process. As we know that english
is not the main language (mother tounge / First Language ) especially used in
Indonesia, not also a second language (second language); but a foreign language
that developed in this country (Foreign Language). Maybe some of us do not
know what first, second and foreign languages are. Let's discuss a little about this.
First language is a language that is used predominantly in our daily lives. For
example, we use Poso or mori language (our mother touge) in everyday life. The
use of Poso or Mori is more dominant than Indonesian. Therefore, Poso or Mori
Language is the main language for people who use it frequently. Even first
language is also influenced by the language that we are beginning to know and is
the first language that we understand from childhood; when parents start
introducing a few words to us when we are toddlers. The second language is the
language which occupies the second position after the main language. This second
language is not used fully in everyday life. Only at certain times will this language
be used. For example, our second language is Indonesian. The language that we
started to know since childhood is Poso or Mori language. Then when stepping on
to the level of PAUD or kindergarten (TK), Indonesian language began to be
introduced to us. Often Poso or Mori people will communicate in Poso or Mori
language in their daily lives, while he/she will use a second language in certain
situations, such as when in formal education in class, meeting other students from
other regions that are not Poso or Mori, in meetings, etc. Then the third is
Foreign Language, the existence of a foreign language arises because indeed this
foreign language is not a language used in a local area, but rather from an outside
area that is usually studied to add insight to the outside world. Foreign languages
are even included in the school curriculum as compulsory subjects. Given that, of
course we already know that foreign languages that are subject matter must have a
large influence on student development, even the development of a country. With
the existence of a foreign language, it is hoped that everyone can communicate
with other people from other countries and use the same language, so that
international communication occurs. The foreign language that we study and
become a compulsory subject in school is English.

Language and Communication

Language allows people to communicate with great precision. The language and
communication group studies how people use language in specific discourse
contexts, to share information with others, and to persuade or otherwise affect
them. All living creatures have some ways to conveying information to others
such as use vocal noises, other physical movement or facial expression. The
human vocal noises consists of sound made by a human being using the vocal
tract, such as talking, singing, laughing, crying, screaming, etc. The human voice
frequency is specifically a part of human sound production in which the vocal
folds (vocal cords) are the primary sound source. Physical movement is the way
when human uses his/her body for gestures of many kinds and convey information
by facial expression. The difference between communication and language are
communication is what we do, what we need to do, what we try to improve.
Between humans, communication is about exchanging information, feelings,
social status, values and ect. Meanwhile, Language is a system
of communication which consists of a set of sounds and written symbols which
are used by the people of a particular country or region for talking or writing.
Both of this things are interconnected with one another.

In The Classroom

Teaching english is important for children to be introduced to it very early on so

that they can understand what you want them to do, especially in the classroom.
However, for most teachers the primary focus of attention is the classroom, they
have to rules the class and the learning process in the classroom, especially
teacher should take a part in facilitating the learning of the language. In teaching
english there are four skills that will be taught by teacher and understand or
comprehend by students. They are listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Firstly, Listening, Teaching listening skills presents a series of challenges. It is
perhaps the most ephemeral of language skills, hard to understand, teach, and
assess because the language ability of the native english speaker is different with
us. Sometimes, it is difficult to produce sound because our mother tongue is not
english and it does not exist. As language teachers, we need to think of how we
can incorporate listening into our teaching and provide opportunities both inside
and outside the classroom for our students to be exposed to significant listening
input. Secondly, Speaking. Speaking is an act of making vocal sound, we can say
that speaking means to converse, or expressing one’s thoughts and feeling in
spoken language. We teach speaking in the classroom because Many students
equate being able to speak a language as knowing the language and therefore view
learning the language as learning how to speak the language. Therefore, if
students do not learn how to speak or do not get any opportunity to speak in the
language classroom they may soon get demotivated and lose interest in learning.
On the other hand, if the right activities are taught in the right way, speaking in
class can be a lot of fun, raising general learner motivation and making the english
language classroom a fun and dynamic place to be. Thirdly, Reading. Reading is
the process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from
them. When we read, we use our eyes to receive written symbols (letters,
punctuation marks and spaces) and we use our brain to convert them into words,
sentences and paragraphs that communicate something to us. In teaching reading
in the classroom, the teacher should gain some relationship of the material to be
read with the students. The students have to comprehend the context of the text or
reading and get more literature from many books. Fourthly, Writing. Writing is a
form of communication that allows students to put their feelings and ideas on
paper, to organize their knowledge and beliefs into convincing arguments, and to
convey meaning through well constructed text. Teaching writing in the
classrooom makes the students can understand how deep the meaning of the text
by writing it and they can be a good academic writing if they always practice to
write with the guidelines how to be a good writer from the teacher.
CONCLUSION

We have to learn TEFL because it is important for us as a prospective teacher in

the future. TEFL is a guidlines for the teacher to teaching english to the students.
Especially, we can know about english in the world today ( englis as an
international, first, second, and foreign language), language and communication,
and what the main focus of the teacher in teaching the fourth skills in the
classroom.
