ABSTRACT
In 1914 James Frank and Gustav Hertz reported that when electrons pass through mercury vapor
there is a discontinuous loss of energy associated with the emission of the ultraviolet (λ = 254 nm)
line of mercury. A few months later Niels Bohr confirmed his proposal for an atomic model
developed by himself. For all this the experiment of Frank-Hertz has become in the classic
experiment to corroborate the quantum theory.
In this experiment the acceleration voltage U2 is raised from 0 V to 30 V, keeping the excitation
voltage U1 and the counter voltage U3 constant and measuring the current of the respective
collector IA. Initially this current increases similarly to a classical tetrode, but reaches a maximum
when the kinetic energy of the electrons reaches just to reach before the grid G2 and deliver by
collision the necessary energy (EHg = 4.9 eV) to excite An atom of mercury. The collector current
decreases drastically because the electrons after the collision can no longer overcome the counter
voltage U3.
As the acceleration voltage U2 increases, the electrons continue to receive energy to excite the
mercury atoms in front of the grid G2. After the collision they are accelerated again and take for the
second time so much energy of the electric field, provided that the acceleration voltage is enough,
that they can excite to an atom of mercury. A second maximum is produced and for even higher
voltages U2 other maxima of the current of the collector IA are produced.
