CIP (Course Inquiry Project) for BIOSTAT:

This CIP will constitute 20% of your Preliminary grade.

1) Group the class into 4. (The President will facilitate the grouping. See to it that the irregular students
are included in the groupings made). If you think having fewer people in a group is better, you can
increase the number of groups to 8 or 10, but 4 is the minimum number of groups that you can have
in a class.
2) Each group chooses a leader.
3) Each group decides on the following:
a) Statement of the Problem (preferably related to your degree program).
b) A short introduction of the topic.
c) Target population (this will be the source of information/data).
d) Sampling Technique (you may use random or non-random sampling). Describe the sampling
details.
e) Data gathering Technique (you may use only one or a combination of techniques, Example.
Observation and Experiment, Questionnaire and Interview). Explain why you chose such
technique.
Note: Interviews must be transcribed and appended in the paper. If a questionnaire is used, a
sample answered questionnaire must also be appended. If an experiment was performed, a copy of
the experiment with pictures of the set-up must be appended.
4) Once data are collected, organize the data using any or a combination of the following:
a) Graphs (pie, boxplots, bar, etc.)
b) Tables
c) Paragraph
Note: each graph or table must be followed by an explanation/discussion.
5) Perform Descriptive Statistics. You may divide the data set into 2 or more categories (Example:
classify the sample according to ethnicity or according to a specific factor). Compute and interpret
the following descriptive measures according to the classification you made:
a) Measures of central tendency including other measures of position (Quantiles)
b) Measures of Variability including interquartile deviation.
c) Other descriptive measures such as measures of Skewness and Kurtosis, standard error of the
mean, etc. whichever is applicable.
Note: Provide a detailed discussion of the results. Comparisons must be supported by numerical
values of the descriptive measure used. It is up to the group to decide which descriptive measure(s)
will be included. If computations are done in EXCEL or SPSS, a sample EXCEL or SPSS output must be
appended.
6) Make a summary report based on your findings.
7) List references used (if any).
8) Use short-bond paper. Cover page must contain the Title, Group No., Names of Leader and
Members, Section.

Submission Date: During the Preliminary Examination week.
