TRANSPIRATION

PREPARED BY:
CONCEPCION, ADA | TRINIDAD, LESTER | TOLON, CHRISTIAN
TRANSPIRATION
• The biological process by which
water vapor leaves the living
plant body and enters the
atmosphere.
• It involves continuous
movement of water from the
soil into the roots, through the
stem and out through the
leaves to the atmosphere.
TRANSPIRATION
• Maximum transpiration occurs
mostly during the day.
(Around 95%)
• It is basically evaporation of water
from plant leaves. However,
unlike evaporation from a water
surface, transpiration is modified
by plant structure and stomatal
behavior operating in conjunction
with the physical principles
governing evaporation.
TRANSPIRATION

• It is measured through a
PHYTOMETER and POTOMETER
TRANSPIRATION
PHYTOMETER METHOD
• It is the practical method for
measuring transpiration.
• It is a large vessel filled with
soil in which one or more
plants are rooted.
• The soil surface is sealed to
prevent evaporation.
Transpiration rate (depth/time)
TRANSPIRATION
PHYTOMETER METHOD
• The only escape of moisture is
by transpiration which can be
determined by weighing the
plant and container at desired
intervals.

Transpiration rate (depth/time)

TRANSPIRATION
POTOMETER METHOD
• It is a device that measures
the rate at which a plant
draws up water.
• The plant draws up water as it
loses it by transpiration, hence
rate of transpiration is
measured.
TRANSPIRATION
POTOMETER METHOD
• It’s basic elements are as
follows:
Plant Cutting
Calibrated pipette
Length of tubing
Airtight Seal
FACTORS AFFECTING TRANSPIRATION

• Light Intensity
• Temperature
• Relative Humidity
• Wind Currents
• Characteristics of plant
FACTORS AFFECTING TRANSPIRATION

LIGHT INTENSITY
• Stomata opens in light and so
more water is lost.
FACTORS AFFECTING TRANSPIRATION

TEMPERATURE
• As temperature increases,
evaporation also increases.
FACTORS AFFECTING TRANSPIRATION

RELATIVE HUMIDITY
• Plant loses more vapor in dry
air rather than in humid air.
FACTORS AFFECTING TRANSPIRATION

RELATIVE HUMIDITY
• Plant loses more vapor in dry
air rather than in humid air.
FACTORS AFFECTING TRANSPIRATION

WIND CURRENTS
• Moving air removes water
vapor from the leaf surfaces.
FACTORS AFFECTING TRANSPIRATION

CHARACTERISTICS OF PLANT
• Extent & efficiency of root
systems in moisture absorption
• Leaf area
• Leaf arrangement & structure
• Stomatal behavior
