ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Respected chemistry department and the faculty:

At the very first place, I would like to say that I am very thankful to the chemistry department

of Veltech University, especially to N.JEEVA mam for giving this opportunity in doing this

project on analysis of underground water.

Respected Dr.E.POONGUZHALI, I should say that I am very immense to say that grateful and

thankful to you, in guiding and helping me to the successful of this project.May this spirit of

helping and guiding the students be continuing of you.

INTRODUCTION
Lead are non essential and toxic metals which are distributed and released into aquatic

environment by industrial sources such as mining, refining of ore, planting process, the use of

phosphate fertilizers and gasoline containing lead that leads from fishery boats,Also heavy

metals(include Cd and Pd) enter the aquatic environment naturally from the rocks and soils

directly exposed to the surface water.

E-Waste or Electronic waste is created when on electronic product is discarded after the end of

its useful life. Disposed lead contained in lake water make it toxic.

DETERMINATION OF TOXIC METAL CONTENT
FROM Lake Water

Aim:
To determine the amount of lead (toxic metal) present in Lake Water.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
sample lake water, known ZnSO4,xylenol Orange ,hexamine,Burrete ,Conical

flask ,Pipette.

Principle:

Toxic metal like lead present in lake water server environmental and health
challenges for all countries in general.Amount of lead is determined by titration with standard
EDTA at PH 1-2 using xynenol orange as a indicator, then adjust the PH to 5-6 using
hexamine, the combined PH can be titrated with EDTA.

Procedure:

Standardisation of EDTA

Pipette out 20 mL of standard zinc sulphate solution into a clean conical flask. Add 10
mL of hexamine solution till the pH is basic and few drops of xylenol orange indicator.
Titrate the mixture in conical flask against EDTA taken in the burette until colour changes
from red to yellow. Repeat the titration to get concordant value. From the strength of zinc
sulphate solution calculate the strength of EDTA.

The amount of lead present in the one litre of Lake Water solution = Eq. Wt of Lead (207.2) x
0.0084 N

= 1.74048 g
Estimation of Lead From Ewaste

Pipette out 20 mL of the Lake Water solution into a clean conical flask. Add 10 ml of n-
hexamine solution till the pH is basic and few drops of xylenol orange indicator. Titrate the
mixture in conical flask against EDTA taken in the burette until colour changes from red to
yellow. Repeat the titration to get concordant value. Calculate the strength of lead solution by
using strength of EDTA and amount of lead present in the Lake Water solution.

Conclusion:

The amount of lead present in 1 litre of the Lake Water solution = 1.74048 g
Puzhal lake contaminated by sullage

The waste water is said be coming from some houses in neighbouring

Thirumillavoyal.

Puzhal lake, which sprawls over 4,500 acres on Grand Northern Trunk Road in
Puzhal, is rain-fed yet manages to supply water to the city round the year.
