DATA MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION

PPDM Geochemistry Work

Group
Presenter: Trudy Curtis
Workgroup chairs
Dr. Dianne Edwards (GA)
Dr. Bob Davis (Woodside)
PROGRESS SUMMARY

Workgroup formed in 2006

• Focus originally mostly in Australian companies

Intensive workgroup sessions in 2006 – 2009

• Business Requirements gathering first cut complete, always in
progress
• Data model draft is nearly complete
• Integration with PPDM 3.8 is nearly complete
• Testing and documentation should start soon

Work group sessions 2009

• Canberra (GA) September 7 – 8
- Contact us if you want to participate
• Additional sessions planned in Houston and Calgary
PROJECT SCOPE

Create PPDM model extensions for

• Sample types, collection and preparation
• Source rock screening Geochemistry
• Source rock extraction
• Fluid Geochemistry
• Fluid inclusion geochemistry
• Lithology
• Reservoir geochemistry
• Improved mechanisms for quality control and integration of
incoming data
GEOCHEMISTRY AND PPDM 3.9

• Prepare groundwork for new

kinds of analysis
• Integrate with existing
subject areas
- Paleontology
- Lithology (core analysis)
- Oil, Water and Gas analysis
• Improve data management
for all sample analysis
- Better QC of incoming data

SAMPLE COLLECTION

• Subject area to be shared for all sample collections

- Rock (core, drill cuttings etc)
- Liquid (oil, water, mud etc)
- Gas (HC, air)

• Supports details of collection

- Sample descriptions
- Method of collection
- Conditions of collection and storage
- Where collected from (spatial and what objects it’s related to)
- Provenance and ownership

• Details of usage
- What studies a sample is used in
- How much of a sample is used

• Tie to the RM module to track storage, retention and management

SAMPLE PREPARATION

• Track analysis projects

- Who did the project, when, where etc
• What is done to the sample
- Preparation step (crush, grind, dissolve, burn, slice …)
- Analysis step (pyrolysis, spectroscopy, microscope …)
- Often a step turns out to be both!
- Order of the steps

• At each step, track outcomes

- What happened to the sample
- Analysis results
PHYSICAL ANALYSIS OUTCOMES

• Many tables are horizontal (explicit columns)

- Desire is to support interoperability and integration of results from many
labs
• Some tables are vertical (general “property” tables)
- Some kinds of study result in too many kinds of outcome – horizontal
tables are not practical
- Managed using the Vertical Table mechanism in PPDM
• Means that the person who populates the controlling reference table governs
the behavior of each kind of value.
QUALITY CONTROL PLANNING

• Lab analysis are provided by many vendors

- Each uses their own terminology and format (often spreadsheets!)
- Integrating the results can be complicated and difficult
- Results of “variable quality”
• Participants would like the option to store information that will
help QC incoming data
- What studies does each lab perform?
- What equipment does the lab have?
- What kinds of analysis can equipment perform?
• Specifications, tolerances
- What kinds of problems could be encountered? Mitigation?
PYROLYSIS (TOC) LOGICAL HIGH LEVEL
TOC = Total Organic Carbon in a sample
OTHER TECHNICAL AREAS
• Elemental Analysis • Bulk Properties Analysis
- Typically C, H, O, N, S, V, Fe, Ni, Ash and - Gas, Oil, Water
others (and ratios)
- For Crude Oil analysis not all of Kerogen studies
• Bulk composition Analysis & Oil
yet Composition
- Organic material is studied via liquid
• Petrographic Analysis chromatography
- Fluorescence
• Gas Chromatography
- Maceral Analysis
- Many kinds of analysis, widely varied outputs
- Maturity typing (Petrology)
• Mass Spectroscopy
• Source Rock Extraction
- Various methods used
- Fluid extracted from source rock
• Isotope Analysis
- Hydrogen, Deuterium
- C12 and C13 etc,
NEXT STEPS

Work group review sessions

• Canberra Sept 7 – 8
• Calgary Late September
• Houston probably November
Testing and documentation
• Underway now
One member company (E&P) is eager to use it ASAP
