Determine the dimensions of the cross-section at X-X. 5. A cantilever rod is loaded as shown in the Fig. 5. Maximum distortion energy theory. 6. A wall bracket, as shown in Fig. 6, is subjected to a pull of P = 10 kN, at 60° to the vertical. The cross-section of bracket is rectangular having b = 2t. Determine the dimensions b and t if the stress in the material of the bracket is limited to 30 MPa. 7. A C-clamp as shown in Fig. 7, carries a load P = 25 kN. The cross-section of the clamp at X-X is rectangular having b = 2t. The clamp is made of cast steel with and FOS is 4. Determine the dimensions of the cross-section of the clamp. 8. A hollow circular column carries a projecting bracket on which a load of 30 kN rests, as shown in Fig. 8. The distance between the load and the centre of the column is 400 mm. the inner diameter of the column is 0.6 times of the outer diameter. Assume FOS = 3. Determine the dimensions of the cross-section of the column. 9. A steel rod of 30 mm diameter is fitted inside a brass tube of 30 mm internal diameter and 370 mm external diameter. The projecting ends of the steel rod are provided with nuts and washers. The nuts are tightened up so as to produce a pull of 10 kN in the rod. The compound is then placed in a lathe and the brass is turned down to 4 mm thickness. Calculate the stresses in the two materials. 10. Find the minimum size of a hole that can be punched in a 20 mm thick mild steel plate having an ultimate shear strength of 300 N/mm2. The maximum permissible compressive stress in the punch material is 1200 N/mm2.
