CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter contains Background of the Study, Statement of the

Problem, the researcher's Assumptions, Importance and Significance of the

Study, Definition of Terms, Scope and Delimitations, the Copnceptual

Framework and the Theoritical Framework that will set as the struc tural

framew of the study.

Background of the study

Stress is afeeling of tension, excitement or pressure to do well which

alerts the body to be ready to put a big effort into whatever a person is doing.

Understanding stress, its cause and the body reation to it is the first step to

coping with stress. While the causes vary greatly from person to person many

organization provide a short list of possible common cause, school and school

related issues such as exam and homework are often found on these list of

cause and are a common place for adolescent to experience on excess.

Academic stress involves mental distress regarding anticipated academic

challenges or failure or even an awareness of the possibility of academic

failure. The impact of the academic styressis also for reaching: high levels of

academic stress have led to p[oor outcomes in the aresof exercise, nutrition,
substance use, and self-care. Further more academic stress a risk factor for

psychopathology.

In today's highly competitive world, students face various academic

problems including exam stress, disinterest in attending classes and inability

to understand the subject. Examination stress is the feeling of anxiety or

apprehension over ones performance in the exams. It can lead to students

being unable to perform the best of their abilities in exams.

adolecents and it may lead to low self-stem. Many psychological problems such

as depression and suicide occur as a result of low self-steem (Niktha, etal,

2014.) A lot of young adolecents are typically face a wide range of stress. The

stress that are encountered and experience by many young adolecents.

Especially the students of junior and semior high school. This research was

conducted to know the level of academic stress of grade 12 students in the

municipality of baras sy. 2017-2018. Hence this research wil be great help

especially the student of grade 12, on how they can manage and avoid the

stress they’ve encountered and experience now adays.


STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to know the level of academic stress of grade 12

students in the municipality of baras sy. 2017-2018.

The following are the specific questions of the study.

1. What are the socio-democratic profile of the respondents?

2. What are the causes of academic stress encountered by the students of

grade 12?

3. What are the possible reasons of stress encountered by the grade 12

students?

4. What are the possible effects of academic stress on academic performance of

grade 12 students?

5. What are the level of academic stress experienced by the grade 12 students.
ASSUMPTIONS

The study was premised on the following assumptions:

1. There are varied socio demographic profile of the respondents. It consist the

Names, Ages, Gender, Address and Religion.

2. A lot of homeworks, projects, projects and exam are the possible causes of

stress encountered by the students of Grade 12.

3. The possible reasons of stress encountered by the grade 12 students are the

lack of learning materials, difficulty to cope in a new curriculum, more projects

and also the one reasons of this are the research or thesis.

4. Helplessness, loneliness loss of concentration, negative outlook, depression,

anxiety, panic attacks and haviong a low grades are some of the possible effects

of academic performance of the students.

5. It has a different level of academic stress experienced by the Grade 12

students just it is how, moderate and high stress.


Importance and Significance of the Study

The result of this study would be great help to the following:

STUDENTS- they could develop self-confident and self esteem so that they can

manage the stress they have experienced and also they can they can balance

the situation they've encountered and they can avoid or atleast minimize any

kind of stress.

TEACHERS- they could help the students in managing their stress levels.

THE READERS- this study would help the readers to know the level of

academic stress of Grade 12 students in the municipality of Baras when it

comes to stress.

THE FUTURE RESEARCHERS- this study would help the future reserchers as

their basis of their study and additonal literature for their investigation.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This research was conducted to determine the level of academic stress of

Gradeb 12 students in the municipality of Baras Sy: 2017-2018. The aspects

were looked into were the cause and effects of stress experienced acdemic

stress of Grade 12 students. This research was also conducted on how the

stress affect the Academic performance of the students.

This research study focus solely on the Grade 12 students in the

municipality of Baras. The result of the research is not applicable for the

problems or topic not selected to it. It is only focused on the level of Academic

Stress experienced by the Grade 12 students.


Definition of Terms

Level- the measurement of stress experience by the Grade 12 students.

Academic Stress- mental distress regarding anticipated academic challenges

or failure experienced and encountered by the Grade 12 students in the

municipality of Baras.

Seniors(Grade 12)- The students in the final year of high school in the

municipality of Baras.

High School- the place where the secondary high school students of the

municipality of Baras are studying.


CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Studies

( leung et al.,2010 ) indicated that academic stress was a risk factor that

heithened student axiety levels and that parental emotional support was a

protective factor that contributeed to better menntal health among children.

However, paternal informational support delivered to children during time of

academic stress apeared to heighten student anxiety level.
