Teori Geosinklin (Geosyncline
Theory)
Teori Geosinklin
• Dikembangkan pertama kali oleh Ahli geologi asal
Amerika Serikat bernama James Hall pada 1859.
• Menjadikan pegunungan Appalachian sebagai
model.
• Prinsip Isostasi bermula dari karya Pratt dan Airy, 1855, yang
kemudian diadopsi oleh Dutton yang diaplikasikan sebagai dasar
untuk membedakan benua dan cekungan samudra di tahun 1889.

Kekurangan Teori Geosinklin
• Tidak dapat menjelaskan keteraturan dari
pegunungan, volkanisme, gempa bumi, dan
kesamaan garis pantai
• Tidak semua daerah dapat mengaplikasikan teori
geosinklin sesuai dengan model asli pertama
dikembangkannya:“appalachian model”

Hipotesis Apungan Benua
(Continental Drift Hypothesis)
Tokoh Penemu
• Teori ini dicetuskan oleh Alfred Lothar
Wegener, seorang Ilmuwan Jerman;
geophysicist dan meteorologist pada
tahun 1912.
“Apungan Benua”
Tokoh sebelum Alfred Wagener
• Sebelum Alfred Wagener, beberapa peneliti telah
“mencurigai” adanya pergerakan benua dengan
bukti kesamaan garis pantai antara Benua Afrika
dengan Benua Amerika Selatan. Diantaranya
adalah:
• Abraham Ortelius (Ortelius 1596),
• Theodor Christoph Lilienthal (1756),
• Alexander von Humboldt (1801 and 1845),
• Antonio Snider-Pellegrini (Snider-Pellegrini 1858),
Kelemahan Hipotesis Apungan Benua
• Hipotesis Apungan Benua mengalami banyak
penolakan selama bertahun-tahun (1910s–1950s).
• Ada dua masalah utama dalam hipotesis yang diajukan
oleh Alfred Wagener:
• Gaya apa yang menyebabkan benua dapat berpindah?
• Wagener memperkirakan kecepatan pergerakan benua
adalah 250cm/tahun, sangat terlalu tinggi untuk dijelaskan.
(kecepatan pergerakan benua Amerika Selatan terhadap
Afrika saat ini diperkirakan 2,5cm/tahun)

• Continental crust is mostly composed of different types of granites. Geologists often refer to the
rocks of the continental crust as “sial.” Sial stands for silicate and aluminum, the most abundant
minerals in continental crust. Sial can be much thicker than sima (as thick as 70 kilometers
kilometers (44 miles)), but also slightly less dense (about 2.7 grams per cubic centimeter (1.6
ounces per cubic inch)).
• As with oceanic crust, continental crust is created by plate tectonics. At convergent plate
boundaries, where tectonic plates crash into each other, continental crust is thrust up in the
process of orogeny, or mountain-building. For this reason, the thickest parts of continental crust
are at the world’s tallest mountain ranges. Like icebergs, the tall peaks of the Himalayas and the
Andes are only part of the region’s continental crust—the crust extends unevenly below the
Earth as well as soaring into the atmosphere.
• Cratons are the oldest and most stable part of the continental lithosphere. These parts of the
continental crust are usually found deep in the interior of most continents. Cratons are divided
into two categories. Shields are cratons in which the ancient basement rock crops out into the
atmosphere. Platforms are cratons in which the basement rock is buried beneath overlying
sediment. Both shields and platforms provide crucial information to geologists about Earth’s
early history and formation.
• Continental crust is almost always much older than oceanic crust. Because continental crust is
rarely destroyed and recycled in the process of subduction, some sections of continental crust
are nearly as old as the Earth itself.
Kuis
1. Jelaskan apa kekurangan dari teori geosinklin.
Mengapa teori ini tidak dipakai lagi?
2. Apa masalah utama dari hipotesis Apungan
Benua? Dan apa yang menjawab masalah
tersebut dalam teori tektonik lempeng?
Tugas
1. Jelaskan proses terbentuknya kerak benua.
Apakah kerak benua masih terbentuk hingga hari
ini?
2. Mengapa kita memiliki umur kerak benua yang
sangat tua, namun tidak menemukan kerak
samudera yang tua?
3. Jelaskan teori tektonik lempeng secara singkat!
Apakah teori tektonik lempeng mulai diragukan
saat ini?
