Lesson Plan in Mathematics 1

(One Half of a Whole)

I. Objectives
a. Cognitive: Recognize ½ of a whole
b. Psychomotor: Read and write one half in symbols and in words
c. Affective: Share with others

II. Subject Matter

o One-half of a whole
o Reference: K to 12 Lesson Guide. Math pg. 18-21
o Materials:
 Bread knife, Cut-outs, pictures, real objects, chart, pocket chart,
audio visual materials.
III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity
A. Preparatory Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of attendance
B. Review
Flash cards of different shapes.
Group Game (each group will name as
many objects as they can with the
given shape.)

I have here a set of flash cards of different

shapes. These set of shapes are inside the box,
you need to name objects as many as you can
with the given shape the group with the most
number of correct objects wins.

Group 1- Circle
Group 2- Square
Group 3- Triangle

C. Posing the problem

Show a picture of two children.
The names of the children are Karen and
Carlo.

“This is Carlo. Carlo has a piece of Carlo has piece of bread.

bread. He wants to share one-half of
the pie to her sister Karen. How should
Carlo divide the pie?” He wants to share it with her sister
Carlo.
a. What are the names of the
children? She wants to give one half of the bread.

b. What does Carlo have?

c. What does he want to do with a

piece of bread?

d. What part of bread does he want to

give to Carlo?

You will pretend to be Carlo and just like

Carlo, you want to divide the cake into two.
How will you slice the cake to show on half?

D. Processing the Solutions and Answers

Now, I have some objects or materials, tell me

what these objects in my hand.

 An apple
 A cake
 An egg pie

Now, I will cut these into two equal parts.

Each part of these objects. This is what we call
“fraction”.

This symbol “ “ tells us that the whole

shape is divided into two equal parts.

If an object is cut into two equal parts, then

each part is called an half.

NOTE:
It is called ½ of a whole.

1 of the two equal parts

2 equal parts
It is called ½ of a whole.

Yes, teacher.
For example. This apple will be cut into two
equal pieces what will you call it?

Another, if this pie will be cut into two equal

parts. How will you call it?

If a whole is divided into to equal parts this is We call it ½.

what we called the ½ of a whole.

Do you understand class?

No. it is not one-half of the whole cut
E. Summarizing the lesson out because the two parts are not equal
in sizes.
Let me see, if you really understand our
discussion.

What do you call 1 part of a whole if the Yes, it is one half of the whole cut out
whole if divided into two equal parts? because the cut out has been cut into 2
equal sizes.
I have here a cut out. I will divide this cut out
into two unequal parts. (Ask while holding
one part), Is this part one-half of the whole cut
out? Why?

Another, I will cut this into two equal parts.

(Ask while holding one part.) if this part one-
half of the whole cut out? Why?

Now, some of you will pick fruits in the tree

and show your classmates ½ of it.

F. Extending the Activity

Group Activity

Now class, I have here some items/objects.

These items are inside the boxes, choose all
items inside the boxes showing ½ and put in
the pocket chart. The first group finish will
win.

Group 1: Shapes
Group 2: Fruits
Group 3: Things

IV. Evaluation
A. Direction: Color ½ of each figure.
1. 2. 3.

4. 5. 5.

B. Write  if the shaded part shows ½ and  if it,s not ½.

____________1. __________3.

____________2. __________4.

__________5.

V. Assignment
