Today’s students communicate via technology, and that If you say absolutely
no Facebook or texting, you are cutting off an important relationship with
students technology as an online teacher use of technology via the use of a
variety of tools such as Skype, text, email, Facebook and twitter. Students today
use social media anywhere and at any time where internet connection is
available in order to meet their educational needs (Dewing, 2010).
Social media is becoming popular and even official communication is carried
out on them as well as personal. Yet, over usage of any media does have its
impact, both positive and negative.

With more than 350 million active users, Facebook is one of the most popular
social-networking sites in history. While it may have benefits such as connecting
one with friends, it may also have very negative effects that could be irreversible.
Three main negative effects that could arise from using Facebook include loss of
sleep, depression, and putting one in a dangerous situation.
Nonetheless, the use numbers continue to grow. Facebook, which remains the
largest social media company. (Cohen, 2019).Even with past data privacy
headlines and scrutiny, "Masses of people are not abandoning Facebook,
according to the company's fourth quarter earnings, released on
Wednesday"(Hamza Shaban, 2019 technology reporter for The Washington
Post).

Recently a study was conducted by the Royal Society of Public Health and
the Young Health Movement, which surveyed nearly 1,500 young adults around
the ages 14-24 from Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales. For this
survey participants were asked to rate 14 mental health and wellbeing-related
issues for different platforms of social media. The mental health and wellbeing-
related issues consisted of items like: quality and amount of sleep, feelings of
loneliness, bullying, fear of missing out (FOMO), anxiety, emotional support,
depression, self-expression and so on. Based on the results from the 14 health
and wellbeing-related questions, the study went ahead and displayed the overall
net impact of each social media platform on health and wellbeing. YouTube was
rated the most positive for health and wellbeing, followed by Twitter, Facebook,
Snapchat, and finally Instagram was found to be the most damaging for one’s
health and wellbeing. It has been noted by many that there seems to be a
problem with viewing image content since both Instagram and Snapchat were
rated so negatively and are social media platforms hugely focused on images
(Stonecipher, 2018).

According to a new study from Pew Research claims that 62 percent of

people get their news from social media, with 18 percent doing so very often.
Almost a quarter of the world’s population is now on Facebook. Because social
networks feed off interactions among people, they become more powerful as
they grow. Thanks to the internet, each person with marginal views can see that
he’s not alone. And when these people find one another via social media, they
can do things — create memes, publications and entire online worlds that bolster
their worldview, and then break into the mainstream. Without social media,
social, ethical, environmental and political ills would have minimal visibility.
Increased visibility of issues has shifted the balance of power from the hands of a
few to the masses (Gaitho, 2018).

H1. If some people on social media harass other to feel better about themselves,
this research will help to prevent or decrease harassment on social media.

2. Social media is popular and addictive, with the help of this research, the users
will be aware on it's effect on them and make their limitation on using it.

3. Social media was found healthy at the same time unhealthy in one's health
and well being and there are many people who's fond on using it, with this
research, they'll be aware on the effects of using it.
Review of Related Literature

The younger generation are the individuals that will lead our world in the
future, they must be well educated to be able to impact this world and make a
better future on the road of success.

As we know, nothing interesting is ever completely one-sided, so it is for

social media as it comes with both positive and negative effects. There is a
correlation between social media usage and academic performance of students
in universities. There have been various views and opinions which recognize four
major advantages of social media use in higher education. These include;
enhancing relationship, improving learning motivation, offering personalized
course material, and developing collaborative abilities (Wheeler, Yeomans and
Wheeler,2008; Rifkin, Longnecker, Leach and Ort).

They are the social generation and are considered as the founders of the
social media movement. Also known as Generation Y, millennials have a more
positive view on technology’s effect on their lives than any other generation
(Nielsen, 2014).
Tech-savvy Filipino millennials are at 27 million and counting, comprising more
than 70 percent of the county’s Internet users (Lamudi citing comScrore, 2014).
With the growing
influence of social media among millennials, social development programs must
start maximizing the massive reach of this tool to help them fulfill their
objectives.

But there are some abusing cases about the social media that we sometimes
won't avoid like: Filipino students have abused the advantages that Facebook
extends to them and they have been using it without caution and moderation.
Eventually, Facebook has greatly affected their academic lives. Generally, Garcia
stated that Facebook usage have apparent effects, both positive and negative,
on students. Facebook users spent less time in studying and they had lower
grades than those who did not use SNS (Social Networking Service).
Despite the pervasive impact of the social media in people’s lives at large, and
considering that the learners of today are defiant to outmoded teaching and
learning methods.

In today’s e-society, the role of the social media is increasingly gaining

momentum. Social media can be defined as a group of Internet-based
applications built on the ideological and technology of Web 2.0 which allow the
creation and exchange of user generated content. Social media is known to play
an essential role in collaboration, community building, participation and sharing.

Chapter 3: Research Methodology

3.1 Introduction

This chapter aims to person the methods and procedures that will be apply in
the study. However, it will furtherly discuss the process to collect info and data for
the purpose of educating and determinating hypothesis. The researchers will
explain farther the details and discuss the following organized sub-heading;
Research design, Justification of the research design, Research approach,
Research setting, Population of the study and Data collection.

3.2 Research Methodology

Research methodology contains the specific producers or techniques used to

identify, select process, and analyze information about a topic. This will help to
find out the result on the researchers research problem. The researchers will
conduct a survey by the given question systematically in the researchers own
way and find out all the answers till conclusion.

3.2.1 Research Design

The research design adopted for the study was qualitative method, for it is
primarily exploratory research. It is also used to gain an understanding or
underlying reasons, opinions, and motivation. The researches chose qualitative
research for it require the use of standardized measures in order to fit the
different perspectives and experience of people into a limited number of
predetermined response categories to which number one are assigned.

3.2.2 Justification of the Research Design

 It is an analytical methodology used in many academic disciplines,

typically in the social sciences. Simpasa (2018)
 It is used in fields such as market research. Simpasa (2018)
 It implies an emphasis on the qualities on entities. Use (2019)
 It is empirical research where the data are not in the form of number.
Mcleod (2017)
 It stress the socially constructed nature of reality. Use (2019)
 It is multi-method in focus, involving an interpretative, naturalistic,
Approach to its subject matter. Method (2017)
 It aims to understood the social reality of individual group and cultures
as nearly as possible. Mcleod (2017)
 It provides insight into the problem or helps to develop ideas or
hypothesis. Defranzo (2014)
 This method is not only about “what” people think but also “why” they
think so. Bhat (2019)
 Qualitative research methods allow for in-depth and further probing and
questioning of respondents based on their responses. Bhat (2019)

3.2.3 Research Approach

The research approach chosen for this research was narrative, the
researchers chose narrative research for it can help the researchers to
communicate the experiences for the respondents clearly. It is one way of
documenting the experiences of individual people.

A narrative research is a form of qualitative research that is used when a

researchers wants to share the stories of individuals. There are many everyday
examples that employ narrative design including autobiography, biographies,
narrative interviews, oral histories and survey.

3.3 Research Setting

The research aims to conduct their study to the criterion selected senior high
students. The study was conducted at Montessori Professional College Marikina
Branch which fall under the Marikina City. This study focuses about the affects of
social media on the lifestyle of Senior high Students. The researchers will
conduct the survey on 8th of March 2019 on the grounds of Montessori
Professional College Marikina Branch.

3.4 Population of the Study

Montessori Professional College Branch of Marikina accommodate an

average number of students around 1,000 who belong to the target participants
of the study who are the batch 2018-2019. The researchers get the 5% of this
population to accurately get the proportionate number of participants for this
number. Thus, the researchers will conduct a survey among fifty students who
belong to the target participants.

3.5 Data Collection

a survey is a research method for collecting info for a selected group of

people using standardized questionnaires. Surveys also require selecting
population for inclusion. Information you gather can come from a range of
sources likewise, There are a variety of techniques to use when gathering
primary data. Questionnaires and surveys response can be analyzed with
qualitative method by a narrative survey. Results are generally easier to analyze.

Summary

In order to accomplish this research, the researchers utilize survey and

questionnaires then will help to identify the effects of social media on the lifestyle
of the students. The researchers personally handed the survey questionnaires to
the respondents. The survey includes the information that will give contribution to
identify the main problems.

In addition, the researchers use the criterion based-sampling to meet the

certain respondents that might give the importance of having a good lifestyle in
using social media. Criterion sampling involves the identification of particular
criterion of importance, articulation of these criterion, and systematic review and
study of cases that meet the criterion. The reason for undertaking criterion
sampling is to identify major system weaknesses for improvement.

n a brief summary, this section explains the methods that were used to
conduct the surveys. It also discussed the research design, research approach,
research setting, population of the study, and data collection.
Chapter 4: Presentation, Analysis, and Interpretation of Data
