Each question carries 10 marks.
Name: Write your answer in the boxes
provided.
Roll No: Test Time: 30 minutes

1. Initially switch S is in Position 1 for a long time. Then, the switch is

moved to Position 2 .

(i)Find the total charge that passes

through the 6V battery.
(ii)Find the total heat generated in the
circuit after the switch is moved from
Position 1 to Position 2 .

2. A 6 F capacitor is charged by a 300V supply. It is then disconnected

from the supply and is connected to another uncharged 3 F capacitor.
How much electrostatic energy of the first capacitor is lost in the form of
heat and electromagnetic induction?
(A) 9 10−2 J (B) 9 102 J
(C) 0.9 10−2 J (D) 9 10−3 J

3. Two capacitors C1 and C2 are charged to 90V and 150V respectively.

It is found that by connecting them together, the potential on each one
can be made zero. Then:

(A) 9C1 = 5C2 (B) 3C1 = 5C2

(C) 5C1 = 3C2 (D) 3C1 + 5C2 = 0

4. In the circuit shown, find the total energy

stored in both the capacitors together.

5. In the circuit shown, the switch S is kept

open for a long time. It is then closed. Find the change in the total energy
of the two capacitors after the switch S is closed.

(A) 5.711 J
(B) 57.11 J
(C) 5.17  J
(D) 57  J

6. If a charge of 40C moves from point A at potential 900 V to point B

at potential 300 V , find the potential energy (in mJ ) released by the
charge.

7. An electric kettle of resistance 20 takes in a current 5A . Find the heat

generated by the kettle in 60 seconds.

8. If the current through a resistor is increased by 200% (this means the

current is doubled), then what would be the increase in power
dissipated assuming temperature remains constant?

(A) 200% (B) 300% (C) 400% (D) 900%

9. Fuse wires are rated by the maximum current that can pass through
them before they melt. Fuse wires are available with ratings in whole
number of amperes ( 1A, 2 A, 3 A, etc). An electric kettle consumes
1400 W of electric power when operated at 220 V . What is the
minimum rating of the fuse wire that you must use for the kettle to keep
working?

(A) 5A (B) 4A (C) 6A (D) 3A

10. The four resistors in figure are

identical and can each dissipate a
maximum of 90W without melting.
Find the maximum power the circuit
can dissipate.
