Practical Training: An Overview
Practical training refers to students’ work experience in an engineering-practice environment to
familiarize themselves with professional engineering practices prior to graduation. The Rajasthan
Technical University prescribed 8 weeks continuous practical training for all undergraduate
engineering programmes. All engineering students must complete at least 60 days of Practical
training as one of the requirements to be awarded a Bachelor of Technology. It is a mechanism to
integrate engineering practices in the curriculum to achieve the overall Programme Outcomes
and Graduates Attributes. Student shall undergo the Practical training during the summer break
after VI Semester examinations.
Students should note that Practical training is an essential component in the engineering
curriculum. It provides exposure to engineering processes at a practical level; helps developing
professional skills required by an engineer and offers opportunity to prospective employment.
Many employers regard this period as a chance to assess potential employees for future
employment.
All engineering students should make considerable effort and give sufficient thought into
obtaining the most effective training for themselves. Whilst challenging, it is desirable to obtain
training that covers a range of activities, such as design, laboratory and on-site field works.
Course Objectives
Through the Practical training, students will be able
CO1 To apply engineering knowledge learned in classroom in real
industrial/Laboratory situations.
CO2 To get the knowledge of advanced tools and techniques and expose to
professional engineering practices in the industry.
CO3 To understand the role and responsibilities as well as code of ethics that engineers
should uphold.
CO4 To develop awareness about general workplace behaviours and build
interpersonal and team skills.
CO5 To prepare professional work, reports and presentations.

with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to
comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make
effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
11. Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding
of the engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own
work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in
multidisciplinary environments.
12. Life-long learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability
to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of
technological change.

Responsibility of Student
Students must attend the practical training briefing provided by Coordinator.
It is to note that the responsibility to obtain a practical training for a minimum period of
60 days as per working hours of company/ organisation lies with the student.
Student should apply in advance in companies/ organisatins for practical training.
After confirmation from company/ organisation is obtained, students must recorded with
the practical training coordinator before undergoing the training.
Responsibility of Coordinators
Coordinator should brief to the students about all areas of practical training in practical
training briefing sessions.
Coordinator should also advise on any doubts or inquiries from the students about their
training. This includes proposed company for training. Students may also consult other
faculty members on the availability of industries/ organizations for practical Training.

Practical training Report
A practical training report should be prepared after completion of training. A copy of the report
should be submitted to the coordinator. Students should also retain a personal copy of the report.
The report is a compiled document that demonstrates student’s learning and development in
technical knowledge, engineering practices and professional skills through the practical
experience. The practical training report should also reflect a student’s ability in communicating
engineering context such as design, processes, evaluation and decision making in a clear and
concise manner through technical reports.
Students should seek advice from company/ organisation to ensure that no confidential materials
are included in the report. The student should be able to present the report to prospective
employers, as a complement to their degree. Any references made in preparation of the report
should be acknowledged using standard referencing formats.
Student should refer to the Practical Training Report Guidelines as given in Appendix A
